The York Gallery; Wednesday [ 09/17 ] -- Exhibit Opening! 8pm onward.

The past few weeks of work were finally coming to a head, and Charlotte was both nervous and excited and getting herself worked up into a frenzy with making sure everything was perfect. She couldn't help feeling an overwhelming sense of satisfaction with the exhibit, though. The turnout wasn't huge, but nicely manageable and thankfully not small by any measure. Some of the work was a bit amateurish, but she had to admit to being pretty blown away by a few of the others.

By the time eight o'clock rolled around and the doors were open, the gallery was set up in a display of the pieces by artist, and the usual spread of treats and drinks were available in another area of the room. Charlotte, dressed in a vibrant red, milled around the gallery to make sure everything was in order and all the guests were enjoying the exhibit. She was also keeping an eye out for the artists of certain pieces, since she was very eager to potentially meet them.

The Community Showcase Exhibit was open!

[[ or will be, once I get the very extensive OCD up! It's up! Enjoy! ]]

Amber tucked her arm through his, reached down with her hand searching for his. She was nervous and she kept biting her lip, glancing around to see who all was here. So many, oh man. Her stomach wouldn't quit doing nervous flip-flops and she could turn around and leave and be just fine with it. Just leave. Just like that.

Leaning in towards Cal, she whispered, "We don't really have to stay."

The comment made Cal wonder if his nervousness was really that palpable, and he gave Amber the sort of smile that he hoped assured her that he was fine, really. "But I really want to see what everyone's submitted."

And any reactions to his own.

"Oh, yah, sure," she managed with a light, faint smile. Her hands felt sweaty and there was no reason to feel nervous, right? It was stupid.

"I think I need a drink."

Cal nodded toward the snacks table. "Free food," he commented. "Another reason to stick around." He gave her a faint smile as he offered out a crooked elbow, "Shall we, then?"

Amber took his arm and gave it a squeeze merely for her own comfort as they started walking towards the refreshments table. "Yah, I'm not too hungry, but my mouth is all kinds of dry."

"Really?" Cal asked, frowning a little. "You feeling okay?"

Because if Amber was catching a cold, then odds are he was going to catch it, too.

"I'm fine, just nervous.. geeze. I submitted my painting, Cal. I didn't tell you and now I'm so iffy about the whole thing and if you want to leave, we can okay? I would be perfectly fine with that." Amber got herself a glass of something to drink, prayed there was alcohol in it, and took a good swallow.

"You submitted something?" Cal asked, and then grinned, taking a very clear look around. "Well, now I gotta go find it."

"No, please," she attached herself firmly to his arm. "Not yet. I'm afraid you'll laugh."

If he laughed a little now, it was only lightly teasing. "Why would I laugh?" Cal asked. "If you have the confidence enough to submit it, I know it can't be that bad. I think it's kind of cool you submitted."

Honestly and upfront, unlike some people, but, as much as he liked Amber, he highly doubted her subject matter would be as...personal as his painting was.

"I did have the confidence. I lost it somewhere on the way here," she whined, not able to help it. "Cal," she whispered, "It's really silly. I painted... flowers. Purple flowers."

Cal moved his arm, unlinking it from Amber's and, instead, going to wrap it around her waist for a light, supportive hug. "What's wrong with purple flowers? Purple flowers are very you."

And he meant that in a good way.

"I know. I felt them when I painted them. It's just, they're so plain and any fourth grader could have painted them. Possibly even a second grader." But his assurance was appreciated and she glanced up at him, searching his eyes to make sure he wasn't teasing her.

Cal looked back down at Amber and gave her a soft smile, letting her know that he meant it, and gave her a little squeeze again. "Show me these supposed flowers," he said, "and I'll bet you anything I couldn't have done them now or as a second grader."

She bit her lip, clearly indecisive. But he would see them regardless and she'd rather see his gut reaction anyway. "Alright," she replied, her voice quiet and nervous as she led the way to her painting (http://community.livejournal.com/fandomtownies/3127048.html?thread=132236296#t132236296).

"You know," Cal said, after a moment had passed where he looked at the painting silently with a nice, unreadable yet thoughtful expression to make Amber squirm a little, "when you said it was something a second grader could do, I expected, like, little sticks with loops on them for petals..."

Re: General Mingling and Snacking -- 09/17.

[identity profile] minnesota-teen.livejournal.com 2008-09-17 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Amber was seriously doing some squirming too. She shifted foot to foot, wrung her hands together in front of her. "Cal..." his name was softly spoken and her eyes were on his face. "Honest opinion."

[identity profile] not-a-mused.livejournal.com 2008-09-18 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
"Honest opinion," he said, "I really like it, Amber." Cal gave her a soft smile, a kiss on the forehead. "It's good. I mean, you'll probably not win any awards on the hoity-toity artist circle, but that's not you, anyway."

Re: General Mingling and Snacking -- 09/17.

[identity profile] minnesota-teen.livejournal.com 2008-09-18 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
"Really?" she grinned wide, not caring in the least about any hoity-toity award. She cared that he liked it and that's all that mattered when it came down to it. "Thank you, Cal!" Amber wrapped her arms around him, going for a tight hug.

[identity profile] not-a-mused.livejournal.com 2008-09-18 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
"Oof." Okay, so maybe it wasn't that tight of a hug, but Cal was known to exaggerate on occasions. But the fact that a simple compliment like that had him grinning, hugging her lightly back.

"If I would've known that complimenting your art was all it took..." he commented, teasingly.

Re: General Mingling and Snacking -- 09/17.

[identity profile] minnesota-teen.livejournal.com 2008-09-18 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
She reared back, smiling up at him. "Well, I'd say now you know for future reference."

[identity profile] not-a-mused.livejournal.com 2008-09-18 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
"And I will shamelessly take advantage of this knowledge," Cal decided, with a firm nod, although he knew quite well that it never took much of anything to get some affection out of Amber and, presently, he leaned in a little to brush a kiss against her cheek. She was too adorable and this whole situation was too surreal for him not to.

[identity profile] minnesota-teen.livejournal.com 2008-09-18 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
"Oooh, I love your dirty talk, Cal," she giggled and leaned in close again because the kiss to her cheek wasn't enough, sweet as it was. She was happy and he was going to know it, so he got a kiss to the lips. A nice, soft, warm kiss.

Re: General Mingling and Snacking -- 09/17.

[identity profile] not-a-mused.livejournal.com 2008-09-18 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
Cal was willing to hold off his comment until well after a kiss like that lingered, to the point where he almost forgot about where they were and was all too reminded of what he'd promised for later.

"How," he finally asked, chuckling as he came up for air, "is that dirty talk?"

Re: General Mingling and Snacking -- 09/17.

[identity profile] minnesota-teen.livejournal.com 2008-09-18 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
Amber smiled knowingly up at him when they pulled apart. "Anything said using the word shamelessly, just has to be dirty. It's in my pirate book a lot."
