Atlas Gym, Wednesday Evening

There was a large signboard in front of Atlas Gym proclaiming the evening's event:

Swim Suit Up and Grab a Noodle!
Wednesdays at the Dive-In
Tonight's Feature - Space Battles IV: Fresh Dreams

Students, townies, and teachers alike could cuddle up on a raft or a noodle in the heated, Olympic-sized pool or the bubbly jacuzzi and watch Duke and Hanno save Princess Leanna from the evil Dark Helmet.

"I lived in a small town," Ned said, nodding. "She lived next door to me and we always played together. I had other...I don't know if they were friends since I only saw them at school but she was my best friend."

"Okay," he said. "I wish you had been my neighbor growing up. My neighborhood wasn't exactly kid friendly."

"I wish that too," Ned said and he really did. He'd have really liked to know Andrew as a kid. "Why was your neighborhood so bad?"

"Crotchety retirees on fixed incomes, gangs, vagrants, poor upkeep in general." He shrugged. "It wasn't what you might call... upscale." Far from it.

"Oh, and the occasional hungry vampire kind of put a dampener on those late night games of tag."

"Oh, that sounds..." It sounded like Andrew had just said vampires. Okay, that was a little... "Bad. Vampires?"

"Vampires, demons -- pretty much any kind of evil thing that could be drawn to the Hellmouth or, you know, crawl out of it." He shrugged again. "You get used to it."

"How'd you survive?" Ned asked. "I mean, you obviously did so you've gotta be smart or quick or strong or a combination of them all."

Andrew grinned. "Thank you, Ned! My brother and I did a little research on our own because it's not exactly a subject they taught in school -- even though they probably should."

"Yeah, the only vampires my hometown had were the ones where it was a kid underneath the mask," Ned said. "I think I'd run away screaming if I ever came face to face with one. A non friendly one. Are there friendly vampires?"

"I only know of one," Andrew replied. "But I still wouldn't want to be left alone in a room with him. But I never really worried about the vampires growing up. There are worse things in the world."

Andrew laughed. "A lack of pie could possibly be the worst thing ever," he agreed.

"Especially for me," Ned said and winced. "Then I'd have nothing to do. I'd have to find a new hobby and I'd pick something like football. Getting squished is not a good look for me."

"If you need someone to taste test and make suggestions, you totally know where to find me," he stated. "You could always back cake and then I could decorate."

"I've never really done it," he admitted. "I've just always thought it would be fun."

"Me either," Ned agreed. "I don't know how good I'd be. I'd get so nervous, I'd spell my own name wrong and it's only three letters long."

"We should totally try it." Andrew was excited. "I've always wanted to try and air brush a cake. I mean, it can't be that different from doing it on a regular surface."

"I've seen the special tubes in stores," Ned said. "I think you could just have a steady hand and be all right. Right?"

"Let's find out. When do you want to have a cake decorating party? We can invite people, and we get to eat it all when we're done, so it's not such a big deal if you make mistakes. Unless, of course, you end up poisoning something." That would be bad.

"I hope I don't poison anything," Ned said, eyes wide. "Yikes. Um and anytime in the evenings is good for me. I tend to have open nights."

"Okay, I'm going to get back in the pool before my pruning disappears. Feel free to come splash me if you like."

"Have a good swim," Ned laughed. He waved and made a note to splash Andrew shortly.
