Caritas - Sunday evening [Open]

"There, there," Jolee told Tino. "It'll be okay. Lift your head up high and get back to work. There are new people in town. That always causes people to want to drink more."

Tino couldn't help feeling sad, though. All of the teams he had been rooting for this weekend had lost! All he knew was that the Eagles had better win or he was going to be very angry.

[OOC: Tino up there is reflecting my opinions of the NFL playoffs this weekend. GO PHILLY! I may be a little slow again. Please mod Tino for speed or groups.]

Women really didn't do it in 1876. But, well, this wasn't 1876. Algren considered for a moment, and then decided to go along with it.

"Apparently, I'm going to be teaching at the school here," he replied. "It wasn't the work I was originally headed for, but while I'm here? It will have to do. What sort of shop do you run in town?"

"Not a kind they have in 1876," Sarah said apologetically. "It sells, well, comic books?" She wasn't sure he would have heard of those. "Illustrated fantastic stories."

That might work better, right?

"Dime novels," Algren offered, attempting to meet her compromise somewhere in the middle and hoping the disparity between his time and hers wouldn't be so great as to eliminate the terminology entirely. "Although I have my doubts they sell for anything remotely resembling a dime in this day and age, do they?"

Actually, he was kind of hoping that dimes still existed.

"Dime novels, but told mostly with pictures," Sarah agreed, happy they'd found terminology that worked. "And the cost ... well, I guess it resembles several dimes?

Algren raised his eyebrows and smiled, leaning forward against the bar, amused.

"Please tell me they still call those 'dollars,'" he said, only half-joking. "We happen to have those, back in 1876."

Sarah rested her chin on one palm. "Dollars," she said, half-apologetically. "The country hasn't changed that much in the last hundred-odd years."

"It's changed enough," he noted, lifting his glass. "To a time where a man can make five-hundred dollars a month and still be considered poor."

He then grinned and took a mouthful of the most expensive whiskey he'd had in his entire life. "With any luck, I'll get the hang of it, sooner or later."

"I haven't even had rent that low in a long time," Sarah said, almost apologetically. "Did you negotiate your salary in 2009 dollars?"

"I certainly hope so. I woke up to the job." This was actually starting to sound more and more normal the more he had to explain it to people. That fact almost worried him. Almost. "Teaching American History, of all things. Somebody on this island appears to have a sense of humor."

"Because -" Sarah took a moment to work it out. "of course the guy from 1876 wants to teach history, he's part of it?"

She shook her head. "This is a strange island."

"You should meet my landlord," Algren mused, and then took another mouthful of his drink. "A strange island, instead."

A pause.

"And you. Are you from the here and now, or did this place decide it wanted to throw you into a situation that was potentially well out of your league, as well?"

"You should meet mine," Sarah rolled her eyes. "If somebody ever comes up to you and can't get through two sentences without swearing, you found Loki. Or are you in MHA too?"

"And," she added, finishing her beer, "I'm from here -- well, Los Angeles -- but the running a store thing is new to me."

"I'm at 25 Unicorn Street," Algren said, sounding entirely too amused at the street name. "If ever you meet a man with a hamster who believes that kicking the door down is a perfectly acceptable way of getting into a house, you've met Minsc."

"I'm not exactly teacher material, myself." He fingered idly at the glass in front of them. "What did you do before running your store, if you don't mind me asking?"

"There's a place to kick doors down," Sarah noted. "And I was ... well, I tried to be an actress, but mostly I worked foodservice. I can't imagine trying to be a teacher. I don't have the patience."

"I hardly have the patience myself," Nathan mused. "I'm hoping that, at the very least, being an army captain will lend itself to this job in one way or another."

He was military. Hmmm. Now that she looked, she saw it in his bearing. "I don't think you can make the students march during class, though."

"If I yell enough, I imagine I could manage it." Nathan eyed his glass for a moment, and then decided to stick to the conversation. For now. "I think a bigger challenge would be getting some of them on horseback."

Cavalry man, right there.

"If you yell enough, you could probably manage that," Sarah mimicked at him. "But the biggest challenge would be getting the horses to stand for it."

"Goodness knows no self-respecting horse would appreciate my efforts," Algren agreed, smiling faintly. "Which means, I suppose, that I'm going to have to stick to teaching the history."
