Groovy Tunes, Tuesday

One thing Jonothon had to say for this island, at least it wasn't lacking in opportunity for employment that suited him perfectly. All he had to do in order to get his head on straight was come in to work, go through the racks of CDs, and pick out some of his feel-good music.

This did not, sadly, go quite according to plan.

//... Pearl Jam never did a cover of Carol of th'Bells.//

Nirvana? No. Bush? No. Anything? Anything at all?

//I hate this naffin' island.//

Groovy tunes was open, and it was festive, like it or not.

[OCD-free, as usual, and open. I'll be back to catch pings after work.]

And lo, toward closing time a Didi appeared -- and promptly rolled her eyes at the music. "I was kind of hoping you'd have something else on the stereo here."

"I get that," Didi said. "Needing noise, I mean. Sometimes when it's quiet at T&C I'll start making Apu play random word games with me. He cheats at Scrabble."

... which wasn't the most incredibly relevant bit of information she had ever shared in her life, no. She looked him over, trying to figure out if he was in better shape than he was last night, and noticed the pink patch from the headbanging.

She reached up a hand. "Here, let me see your forehead."

She rubbed her thumb over the faint mark, trying to erase it.

Those hazel eyes were distracting. Didi was better than yesterday, mostly, as long as she didn't think about it.

"Hmmm? Oh, he -- he makes things up and says they're Hindi," she said. "And he argues with me about being racist if I point out you aren't supposed to play foreign words."

Didi snorted. "My Aztec's a little rusty. Think I could fake it?" she said. "I like to think of myself as being too good to cheat at Scrabble, anyhow."

Toooootally normal conversation. Yay.

"Hard to remember, but I did too," Didi groaned. "It's happy. And I like -- you know. Bells."

She scrunched up her nose. "I sound like an idiot so I am changing the subject. Were you going to go see the play?"

"It's a thing to do."

And it didn't involve babbling about nothing or staring at each other and pretending they hadn't slept together while they were insane, so -- "Yes. Yes, I want to go. I like the play, anyhow. Especially since it's my brother's fault to start with."

"That might have been why I pointed it out," Didi said, looking up from under her lashes. Flirty eyes and Endless family stories helped with Plan Blissful Denial. "Anyhow, so about five hundred years ago, Morpheus was in this pub in London to see a friend. And he's sitting there, waiting, and he overhears this table of playwrights talking. And one of them, Will -- he's not good, everyone's kind of ragging on his stuff, but he has passion. He says he'd give anything to be great."

She paused, smiling slightly at the foolishness. "So Morpheus gave him greatness. He just asked for two plays in return. This is the first one."

... and then Didi would have said "Maybe" and walked away, because she had better things to do than argue with humans and no time to do it in anyhow.

"That's the idea, yeah."

"Oh, now he believes me," Didi said lightly and to no one in particular. "... it was the last play. The Tempest."

"Yeah?" Didi asked. She had wandered over to the bins of music and was thumbing idly through 500 country music versions of the Carol of the Bells. "I can see that. What do you like about it?"

"Somehow I'm not surprised," Didi said, considering it as she eyed the cover of the Brad Paisley Carol of the Bells. "He's your type of character, right? And he gets so many of the good lines."
