The Boards - Richard III, CLOSING NIGHT - Thursday evening

Now was the winter of their discontent... The last night of Richard III was starting very soon. Still no sign of their errant Director, but Tony seemed to have everything well in hand. Sophie had counted up receipts from Tuesday, and they were doing quite well. The students had certainly given it their all on Tuesday night.

And Geoffrey may have cast them, encouraged them, and directed them, but everyone in the theater tonight had their own reasons for wanting this last evening of the play to go well.

"Thirty minutes, everyone. Our Stage Manager says places in thirty."

[OCD on its way up!]

"Thanks!" Karla said, beaming up at Sam. "You were terrific, too. The dynamic you and Dinah had--it was amazing. And creepy. And amazingly creepy."

Sam laughed. "It didn't start out that creepy, it just sort of happened," he said. "It's amazing what a difference having an audience makes. I think everything that came out differently was a good different though. I'm kinda sad it's all over."

"Oh, it did," Karla assured him. "I'm not kidding when I said you were terrific."

She got a little wibbly when Sam mentioned it all being over, but she kept her smile bright anyway. "There's still one more, before the summer ends," she said. "And even so, it's good to go out, knowing your performance was amazing."

"I'll still be here for a good part of the summer," Sam said, for his own benefit as much as hers. It was nice to remind himself that he wasn't leaving here soon. "I have to admit, I didn't expect the year to end with so many high notes."

"I think you sometimes underestimate yourself," Karla said. "Prom, play, even graduation--how else was it supposed to end, except on high notes? But I'm glad you'll be around a little longer. The campus will be empty without my elder sibling around to bother."
likethegun: (i'm looking down and being smug)

"And I wouldn't have nearly as much fun not being bothered," Sam said. "I just wasn't sure where things would end up when the semester started and...you know, Peter was still gone. And even with him being okay, things don't usually go my way this much. It's kind of freaky, even if it is nice too."

"I still think you deserve having a lot of good stuff, after all the heartache at the beginning of the semester," Karla said, nodding. "I know that's not how life works, but it's true nonetheless."
likethegun: (i'm smug and satisfied)

Sam blushed a little at that. "Thanks. It means a lot to hear that," he said. "You'll be around for the summer, right? I know some people take the time to go home and see family and stuff."

Karla's smile faded a bit, but rallied a moment later. "I can't go home too often," she said. "Uhh, political stuff."

Was one way of explaining it, sure.

"So, yeah, I'll be here for most of it."
likethegun: (i'm making an innocent face)

"Oh," Sam said, frowning. "I'm sorry. I...you won't be alone here, not by a long shot. And maybe things at home will get better?" He'd obviously stolen someone else's sense of optimism.

"I'm looking forward to it," Karla assured him. "I've got more friends here than I've had in my whole life! And since I've only got a summer left with some of them, I'm going to make the most of it, I promise."

And if Sam didn't notice that she'd skipped over the 'things getting better bit,' well, Karla wouldn't cry about it.

"Do you know how long you'll be staying on the island for?"
likethegun: (i'm looking down and being smug)

"I'm going to be staying for at least the first half," Sam said. "Dean's thinking about coming back to teach, so I might be helping him, and even if he doesn't, I'm just not ready to pack up and go. But Peter's waiting for me to come and live with him, so...I'm really looking forward to that too. But I probably won't go until later in the summer."

"You're going to live with Peter?" Karla asked, giving voice to her inner-Yenta. She gave him a merry smile. "You will remember to go to class sometimes, won't you?"
likethegun: (i'm laughing while looking down)

"Of course! We're not going to--I'm too much of a nerd to miss my classes. He moved into my room last summer and I went to all of my workshops." Granted, he didn't get as much work done outside of class as usual, but that wouldn't happen with college, surely. "I'll go to class and he'll go to work and we'll both be good and responsible."

"And just send text messages," Karla said with an impish grin.

Yeah, she listened to radio.

Sam's cheeks flushed as he tried to hide his embarrassment. "Only when we're apart and on breaks and won't distract each other from our very important work."

Karla chuckled. "I love that you can be the embodiment of wickedness on the stage and still flush at that," she said, deciding to be a good little sibling and stop teasing. "Sam, you're in love. Anyone who'd take you to task for something like that is just dreadfully cold-hearted."
likethegun: (i'm looking down and being smug)

"Or it's Dean. He has his own set of rules about stuff involving me and love," Sam said, although he was smiling more now.

"He's a big brother," Karla said with an exasperated sigh. "They were invented solely for the purposes of being difficult."

Older cousins fell into this category, too.
likethegun: (i'm just ridiculously hot)

"But only real big brothers," Sam insisted. "Fake ones aren't difficult at all."

"Fake ones are wonderful," Karla said with a happy grin. "Much more reasonable. And better to talk to."
