The Boards - Richard III, CLOSING NIGHT - Thursday evening

Now was the winter of their discontent... The last night of Richard III was starting very soon. Still no sign of their errant Director, but Tony seemed to have everything well in hand. Sophie had counted up receipts from Tuesday, and they were doing quite well. The students had certainly given it their all on Tuesday night.

And Geoffrey may have cast them, encouraged them, and directed them, but everyone in the theater tonight had their own reasons for wanting this last evening of the play to go well.

"Thirty minutes, everyone. Our Stage Manager says places in thirty."

"Most definitely." Sophie squeezed her arm, then let her hand drop. "I've grown quite fond of this insane island. "I need to act too much to give it up either. I may visit friends at different points over the summer, but I intend to make certain that plays continue at the Boards." One way or the other.

Karla tried not to look too relieved at that. "I am very glad to hear you say so," she said. "I'd be dreadfully sad if you didn't. Who else could I go to for makeup and acting tips?"

"And economics," Sophie said, teasing slightly again. "If you wish to stop by the gallery again, you don't need any other excuse."

"I really ought to," Karla said. "Do you know what your next installation will be? Though I'm afraid I'll have to stick to a much smaller budget this time, so I hope it isn't anything I love too much."

"Not at the moment, although I'm leaning toward something with semi-precious stones," Sophie said mischievously. "You'll understand when you see it." And probably want to buy it, yes.

Karla gave a loud, theatrical sigh. "Shall I just start signing over 'Dite's checks to you now, then?" she moaned. "I'm glad I got a job just so I could support my art habit."

"You're working for Aphrodite?" Sophie said, mildly surprised, and slightly more amused. "That must be-- educational." She smiled more widely. "And I suspect so, yes. They're definitely at the higher end of the scale."

"She asked me," Karla said, looking very proud of herself. "And I'd never had a job before, so I agreed. It's very..." she thought of the Baby Jesus not-an-ornament and blushed. "...educational's a good word, yes."

"Mmmmmm," Sophie said, pressing her lips together to hide her smile. "I'm glad you've found a place to earn money for yourself, and 'Dite herself is utterly charming." She approved of anything that raised someone's awareness of monetary matters, and on this island, she could get into very little trouble working in a shop of that kind.

"Dite is wonderful," Karla agreed. "She likes to tease and make Dinah blush--" because only Dinah blushed when 'Dite was teasing them, really "--but there's no adult on the island I trust more, I think."

"Excellent." A goddess in one's corner certainly couldn't be a bad thing, now could it? "And I think I rather miss being teased, myself. I'm very glad you have such a close friendship with her." Sophie tilted her head. "You have at least a few more years here, don't you?"

"Three more, if all goes well," Karla replied. "I'm really hoping I can stay the entire time. I have a lot of friends here. It's...nice."

"Nice" was not the word Sophie would have chosen, no. But interesting, and comforting in its own way, certainly. "Then I look forward to many more productions. And sales," she said, with a glimmer of a smile.

The island was crazy, both an an entity and it's effect on the people who lived here. Having friends, however, was very nice, indeed.

"I'm glad I can do my part to fund your exotic lifestyle," Karla teased. "I'll be the poorest student on the island with the most amazing collection of art."
