With the ceremony completed and the graduated officially done with their high school careers, a brunch had been planned to celebrate the occasion and allow graduates, their guests, and the other inhabitants of the island to enjoy some good food and good conversation outside. The weather was warm and the sky was clear.

Fraser had been busy helping set up since the early morning hours. Apparently, Dean Stinson had gone a little overboard with some of the food, particularly the cake. The huge sheet cake arrived via truck and, where Fraser thought he'd be able to carry it, ended up having to use a forklift to get it to the park. From there, it took several people to lift the cake onto a table of its own. It was that big. Fraser hoped everyone enjoyed and hoped everyone was prepared to take a lot of cake home.

There were also several other tables of food and drinks, ready to be enjoyed. There were tables and chairs situated around the park, covered by tents to keep it from becoming too warm.

And there was cake. Please don't forget the cake.

Cake was good. Kate had a slice of that, too, when she wandered over and plopped herself down in a nearby chair.

"Hey you." Always so very polite, our Kate. "Did you go to the ceremony last night?"

"Of course I did," Mitchell said, sitting back. "Jack was graduating, and I wouldn't want to miss the spectacle."

"Well, how was it? Did Jack fall flat on his face?"

Not that she saw any particular reason for him to do that. But maybe the TA rivalry was starting a bit early.

Mitchell started laughing, in a way that was mostly light-spirited. "I take it you weren't there, then," he said. "It wasn't exactly what you'd expected."

"I would be more shocked if it had been anything like it's supposed to be," Kate noted. "What was it this time?"

Mitchell shrugged. "Eh," he said, "There may have been children and animals and singing involved..."

And that made Kate frown. A lot. "Really? Fuck, maybe I really should've come see that."

"And that," Mitchell said, popping some cake into his mouth, "Is why you should always attend school functions."

Kate shrugged. "Well, I got to see not one but two of the dining establishments this wonderful town has to offer. So my evening wasn't a complete bust, either."

Yes it was.

"You missed Jack singing," he said, cheerfully.

"I think I'll live," she snorted. "Was it amusing?"
