With the ceremony completed and the graduated officially done with their high school careers, a brunch had been planned to celebrate the occasion and allow graduates, their guests, and the other inhabitants of the island to enjoy some good food and good conversation outside. The weather was warm and the sky was clear.

Fraser had been busy helping set up since the early morning hours. Apparently, Dean Stinson had gone a little overboard with some of the food, particularly the cake. The huge sheet cake arrived via truck and, where Fraser thought he'd be able to carry it, ended up having to use a forklift to get it to the park. From there, it took several people to lift the cake onto a table of its own. It was that big. Fraser hoped everyone enjoyed and hoped everyone was prepared to take a lot of cake home.

There were also several other tables of food and drinks, ready to be enjoyed. There were tables and chairs situated around the park, covered by tents to keep it from becoming too warm.

And there was cake. Please don't forget the cake.

"Engagement ring?"

He didn't expect Kate to get engaged, but then she was sometimes unpredictable.

Unpredictable, yes, but not quite that unpredictable. She gave him a look.

"It was delivered to the wrong table." Beat. "Ours."

And here Leto couldn't resist bursting out laughing. "I would have liked to see that, I think."

Kate shook her head and smirked a bit. "There was mostly just... a lot of horrified staring."

"So you didn't take the opportunity?" he teased.

She snorted. "Because I so totally want to be 16 and married to a guy I can't even go out with without something going wrong."

"Does this sort of thing happen often, then?" Leto asked.

"We've tried to have coffee together three times before this," Kate replied, before rattling off, "First time, it was attacking flamingos. The second, gremlins. And finally, a fucking boa constrictor."

She made a face. It all sounded worse, listed like that. She hadn't even realized.

"Flamingos?" Leto said. "The ones from the park?"

"Those, yeah," Kate nodded. "I swear we didn't do anything to provoke them. My theory is they were jealous."

"Jealous? Of what?" Leto said, then added: "I got those flamingos here."

"Of Warren's wings-- wait, you what?"

Well, that was news.

"Alice wanted to play croquet, so I got her flamingos. They were not cooperative." he smiled at the memory. "Warren has wings?"

Kate quirked a brow at that. "Yeah, I bet they weren't. And yeah, he does. They're pretty impressive, actually."

A 16-foot wingspan usually was.

"Oh?"

Of course a 16-foot wingspan was impressive.

"The flamingos seem to have settled well in the pond though."

"Looks like," she shrugged. "They seemed happy enough when I was there a while back. You know, once I actually dared to go to the park again."

"You avoided the park because of the flamingos?"

"They charged at us. It was a traumatic experience."

She thought it was kind of obvious why she'd be hesitant to go back after that.

"They must have been in an odd mood," he replied. "Unless you were trying to use them as croquet mallets." Leto still wasn't entirely sure whether that had been one of Alice's inventions or whether people actually tried that.

"We were looking at them. I've never even felt the need to use a bird as a croquet mallet."

Not that she'd actually ever spent a whole lot of time playing croquet, but that was hardly the point.

He shrugged lightly, still amused. "I hope you manage to make friends with them."

She was sceptical. "We'll see. They're pretty, but probably not really my type."

"So, what animals do you like?" he asked cheerfully.

"Cats," she decided rather quickly. "Cats are awesome."

A completely unbiased opinion from the occasional feline, of course.

"Even when they're called Kate?" he teased her.
