With the ceremony completed and the graduated officially done with their high school careers, a brunch had been planned to celebrate the occasion and allow graduates, their guests, and the other inhabitants of the island to enjoy some good food and good conversation outside. The weather was warm and the sky was clear.

Fraser had been busy helping set up since the early morning hours. Apparently, Dean Stinson had gone a little overboard with some of the food, particularly the cake. The huge sheet cake arrived via truck and, where Fraser thought he'd be able to carry it, ended up having to use a forklift to get it to the park. From there, it took several people to lift the cake onto a table of its own. It was that big. Fraser hoped everyone enjoyed and hoped everyone was prepared to take a lot of cake home.

There were also several other tables of food and drinks, ready to be enjoyed. There were tables and chairs situated around the park, covered by tents to keep it from becoming too warm.

And there was cake. Please don't forget the cake.

"Shit, I don't care," she shot back. "Most of them can go fuck themselves, and it'll make me happy." She shrugged. "But like I said, what I do reflects on Lissa, and she's got more important things to worry about. She's gotta deal with politics and the royals and all that shit."

"And she can't get with the fuck 'em attitude?" Alex guessed.

"No way," she said. "She's too young and the last of her family. She's gotta play the game and be charming and diplomatic if anything at all's going to change." Rose smirked at him. "And then we'll have the fuck 'em attitude."

Well, she would.

"She know about you and whathisface?" Alex wondered. "The dude from the gym."

"No way," Rose said quickly. "That's - no, that wouldn't -"

"Why not?" Alex wondered. "How can she know I'm fucking attached and you're not? You don't trust her?"

"No, God, not that like at all," Rose said quickly. "I totally trust her. But she'd worry about it. She needs to know my focus is on her. Not - other stuff."

"That's bullshit, Rose," Alex said, shaking his head. "If she's your friend, she's going to trust you no matter what. And from what I saw, she's your friend through and through. Doesn't she want you to be happy?"

"Yeah, of course," Rose said instantly, not letting herself think about that. "I'll be happy making sure she's safe."

"She gonna be around later?" Alex wondered for no reason at all. "I'm sure I could fill her in on that way of thinking. I bet she'd be thrilled."

Rose glared at him. "Don't you fucking dare, Alex. It's the truth. If Lissa's safe, I'll be happy. That's all that matters. Dimitri knows it as well as I do."

"You know, I'm not just talking about being with this guy, Rose," Alex said, shaking his head. "You don't think she wants you to have your own life too? Maybe ask her one day."

"You don't get it, Alex," Rose said. "As soon as I pass my trials, she is going to be my life. That's how it works. I'll be with her twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. We both know this. It's part of being a guardian. She's more important, and she comes first." She shrugged. "It sounds stupid here, but it's true."

"I'm not concerned with your goddamn job," Alex said, shaking his head. "Just, have you ever asked her what she wants for you? Ever even tried to talk about that or is this party line the only thing that exists?"

"Why would I ask her?" Rose asked. "We've been planning it since we were kids."

"If it's not a big, why don't you wanna ask her?" Alex countered. "If the answer's still the same, you've got nothing to worry about."

"I don't want her to think I'm having second thoughts," Rose said. "She's - a lot better, but she hasn't always had an easy time."

"You really think she'd do that?" Alex wondered, shaking his head. "You don't trust her to think she'd know what you meant to her?"

"I do trust her," Rose interjected. She glared at him a little. "I'll think about it."

"No harming in asking," he said, standing up so he could lean across and kiss Rose's cheek. "I think she'll surprise you. Don't eat too much, Rose. Those hips are getting a little big."

With that, he grinned and headed off towards the food table.

Way to leave a girl speechless there, Alex, and Rose sputtered for just a second.

There was muffin hurled at his back though. "You should talk!"
