With the ceremony completed and the graduated officially done with their high school careers, a brunch had been planned to celebrate the occasion and allow graduates, their guests, and the other inhabitants of the island to enjoy some good food and good conversation outside. The weather was warm and the sky was clear.

Fraser had been busy helping set up since the early morning hours. Apparently, Dean Stinson had gone a little overboard with some of the food, particularly the cake. The huge sheet cake arrived via truck and, where Fraser thought he'd be able to carry it, ended up having to use a forklift to get it to the park. From there, it took several people to lift the cake onto a table of its own. It was that big. Fraser hoped everyone enjoyed and hoped everyone was prepared to take a lot of cake home.

There were also several other tables of food and drinks, ready to be enjoyed. There were tables and chairs situated around the park, covered by tents to keep it from becoming too warm.

And there was cake. Please don't forget the cake.

Rivka couldn't help smiling at him, a little amused. "That first part is a very male answer, Jack."

"I can't help that part!" Jack said, the slightest laugh in his voice. "I suppose I do love him. It's just -- complicated."

You said that already.

"What isn't now?" she asked, sounding a little world weary.

//...I sound like I'm forty, yes.//

//You sound like the older sister of a rather impossible young man,// Jack answered. //I know it's not the life you would want for me, being his -- pet. It's not what I want, either.//

//You like being rather impossible,// Rivka teased. But she was more serious as she continued. //It isn't. But - I want you to be happy. If that is what it would take, I would ...// she trailed off, looking for the right word even in their native language. //...want you to be happy.//

That wasn't circular at all, right?

//I don't know what exactly it would take for me to be happy. I don't expect you to suss it out.// He reached for her hand. //Thank you, though.//

Things had been simpler a year ago, but it ... wasn't a year ago.

She chuckled, squeezing his hand lightly. "You wouldn't be an impossible young man, Jack, if you knew."

"Oh, I could find other ways to be impossible," Jack informed her lightly. He kept how bothered he was by the entire conversation -- especially in regards to what Emma had said -- as repressed as he could manage. "You should have some of the cake. I think they bought enough for a few thousand of us."

"I saw that," Rivka admitted, shaking her head at what seemed like such amazing extravagance on the school's part. She started him towards the cake. "Everything they do here seems so extravagant. It's amazing."

"They must have generous alumni?" Jack speculated. "Or their endowment is ridiculous. I've never understood where it comes from, but I'll aprpeciate it while I can."

"As you should, Jack, as you should," she agreed easily. "Come, let's get some cake."
