The Beach, Saturday Afternoon

After a conversation with Kitty earlier in the week about summer and beaches and partying in general, she and Warren had both agreed that throwing one such party as soon as possible would be a great idea!

And, while Warren hadn't really done this 'beach party' thing many times in his life, he'd decided to default to the tried and true, 'if it looks beach-like, spend money on it' strategy, just to be certain that he didn't mess this up. There was a cooler with assorted soft drinks inside, a BBQ and a small stack of hot dogs and hamburgers, there were salads and there were chips and, heaven help him, he'd invested in a beach volleyball net. Because if there was one thing that television had taught him about these things, it was that an afternoon on the beach wasn't complete without a rousing game of beach volleyball while played to a rousing montage of 80's rock on that handy portable radio he'd bought.

Yep. Beach volleyball. Probably shirtless. Or at least in bikinis.

... Look, he was a teenage boy. He was allowed to have some wishful thinking at least sometimes, right?

Sure, it's a little cloudy out today, but it's still ridiculously hot. What gives, weather?

It was best not to ask how long Kitty had spent trying to figure out which bathing suit to wear, since she figured a one-piece wouldn't fly anywhere that the guys took off their shirts on day one, but didn't want to be all like Hi there in a bikini. Not that she thought she had what it took to be all like Hi there in a bikini but that was not the point.

Ladies and gentlemen, the tankini. Nice compromise there.

Oh, and Kitty was happy to be here, and if her head was kind of bopping to the music, well, that was to be expected.

"Beach," Warren announced, grinning as he stepped up to Kitty and gestured around them. "And the beginnings of a party, even. Which, I believe, officially makes this one of the best places to go to school on the entire Eastern seaboard."

And he could tell because of his vast amounts of experience going to schools around the Eastern seaboard, right? Sure, Warren.

"Yo, Kitty," Bobby waved. It was a little weird to have gone from meeting Kitty in Fandom, to meeting the Kitty back home, and then back to Fandom. But both Kittys (Kitties?) had been pretty cool so far, so no complaints.

Karla had been planning a beach day herself--as evidenced by the suit, the towel, and the book she was carrying--but seeing Warren setting up the net and everything piqued her curiosity. "Kiss kiss," she said, wandering over. "What's this for?"

Someone had never been introduced to volleyball. Clearly, this must be rectified.

"The net itself, or the whole mess of it?" Warren shot Karla a lopsided smile. Possibly because, hey, it was Karla! Possibly because, hey, it was Karla in a swimsuit! "I decided I was going to give 'being social' a try," he said. "Kitty's helping. Have you ever played volleyball?"

For what it was worth, neither had he. But it couldn't possibly be too difficult, right?

For once, Blind Seer was not by Firekeeper's side as she made her way to the beach. Parties just weren't his thing. Firekeeper, though, was much more of a fan, even if a beach party probably meant a lack of dancing.

Rilla was not entirely sure how appropriate it was that her very first party ever was one in her swimwear (http://www.twolia.com/blogs/heres-looking-like-you-kid/files/2009/05/swimsuit-swanson-sm.jpg), but Warren was very handsome.

So here was Rilla, feeling massively overdressed as soon as she as arrived.

Blackagar was in possession of something called a swimming suit. And he'd needed to get out of that cabin all week, so there he was on the beach.

Probably going to discover how unfortunate a sunburn could be, but those were minor details.

Bobby was maybe not the biggest fan of hot weather, but he was a fan of Warren. And parties organized (at least in part) by Warren. So here he was, dressed appropriately for a beach party and everything, although he'd probably be retreating to the shade sooner or later.

Denise wasn't really a... party person.

Or a heat person.

Or a friendly person in general.

What she was doing was showing up purely for the free food, which would explain why she wasn't bothering to stand still but was... beelining. Beelining was the word.

Too bad no one had warned the redhead about sunscreen. Stupid more powerful UV rays.

Christian didn't own swimwear, so he'd improvised with a t-shirt borrowed from his cabin's lost & found box and a pair of trousers rolled to the knee.

He waded into the water and stood there, letting the waves bury his feet in the sand and release them. The sensation made him grin.

Staying away from a party on the beach would be like rejecting fresh baked cookies. Clark was no dummy. Like others, he too possessed appropriate swimwear, but it was less impressive for him, being from this planet and culture and all. Or something.

What he needed were sunglasses. Squinting was not hot.

Spock had had no idea there would be people at the beach today, and had merely come to observe the giant expanse of water that never got less ridiculous...and found several scantily-clad classmates. Oh, bother. He decided the logical course of action would be to stay and make an effort to be social, even if he was rather overly dressed for the occasion and, by Human standards, for the weather, as this was 'rather cool' by Vulcan standards--most people would have been sweating through long sleeves, but not Spock.

Goose had largely been ignoring major social gatherings but had decided to go to the beach that afternoon and so he was there and not trying to look awkward.

Yep! There's barbecue, of course, and salads and sodas and potato chips and other moddable deliciousness. Because it isn't a party without moddable deliciousness.

This was where Warren had staked out a place for himself, yes. If only because somebody had to make certain that there were enough hamburgers to go around for a little while, and... Well, he'd never gotten to play with a BBQ before. It was kind of cool.

Turn the knobs! Make fire! Cook things! Independence was awesome.

It's entirely possible that Warren grew up watching meta for Top Gun. And probably a lot of Baywatch reruns.

At least the music on the radio can be changed, if anyone gets sick of Kenny Loggins.

Look, when Warren decides to go all-out with this 'beach' thing, he delivers. There are a few surfboards, a large selection of pool noodles, some inner tubes, beach towels, suntan lotion in spite of the cloudy day, inflatable floating shark rafts, and some pails and shovels.

... He used to like making sandcastles on the beach in his youth. So sue him.
