Why break a routine, right? Nathan made it three weeks in a row in the bar on a Wednesday and three weeks in a row, he ended up behind the bar when Tino's regular bartender didn't show up again. Nathan was beginning to think this guy was on sabbatical or some shit. Or maybe he was mad at Tino.

No matter, Nathan grabbed a bottle of Irish whiskey and set it up on the bar, pouring himself a glass and downing it quickly. He wasn't thinking of the bitchy fight he'd had with Kate earlier or any of the other million weird and complicated things that had happened to him lately.

Nope, he was a man who had liquor and that would erase all those thoughts he didn't want to have right now. Okay, maybe those thoughts were sticking around but Nathan was ignoring that fact. He was toasting the band and toasting Tino and toasting Tino's attempts at singing with the band.

It was Wednesday and so far Wednesdays seemed to be the nights when Caroline put on something cute and hit the bar for free drinks and possibly nachos later. Don't ask.

"Drinking away your sorrows?" Caroline asked, leaning against the bar, her eye on Nathan's glass.

"Who says I have sorrows?" Nathan asked, refilling his glass before sliding it towards her without even thinking about it.

Apparently, that was just a thing now.

"Unless you're gonna be loaning me some of your sorrows so I can drink them away in a typically melodramatic fashion worthy of a chick flick. Come to share your sorrows with your adorable roommate?"

"Surprisingly I came to the bar for a drink," she informed him, picking up the glass and taking a sip. Ugh the burn. "Besides, chick flick levels of sorrow requires girlfriends and really painful music. And probably nail polish. Did you want a manicure, Nate?"

"Thank you but I'll pass," he said, tapping his blunt nails against the counter once before leaning on it and grinning. "Manicures are for nights when I'm so pissed that I can't even sit up and my mates think they're fucking hilarious."

Was that a giveaway that something similar had happened once or twice? Maybe. "I'll leave the feminine primping and putzing to you. I'm sure you do it better than I because I just have...no need to look girly. No need at all."

"Oh, so you're saying I need to primp and putz and try really hard to look girly." Was she leading him down a dangerous path? Perhaps. Did she think it was going to be entertaining? Hell yes!

And she was holding his glass hostage.

Nathan had to think back to see if that's what he'd actually indicated but couldn't really tell one way or another. "I think you enjoy primping and putzing in order to achieve the highest levels of girliness that you can. It's like video games, Caroline. Once you get a certain amount of...compliments, you level up and have to try for more."

That made little sense but Nathan already had some alcohol in him and didn't care.

"Level up? Oh God you're a nerd." She downed the rest of the glass, making a horrible face at it and then passed it back over to Nathan. "Girls are not Dragon Ball Pokemon or whatever. We're far more competitive than cards and video games."

"For your information, I don't play...whatever the fuck those games you just listed are," Nathan said, making a face and refilling the glass. He kept his hand on it though. "The video games I play are a little more...adult."

And that didn't mean porn this time. Glass in hand, Nathan said, "You do enjoy lecturing me about the fairer species, don't you? It's like a challenge for you, I bet."

"For your information, we are not a different species," Caroline corrected him, flipping her hair and not thinking there was anything at all wrong with having conversations where she was right and Nathan was not. "Just sex. And I don't lecture you. I share information. Isn't that what friends are for?"

Nathan just grinned at her before downing half of his glass and passing it to her so she could finish it off. See, she didn't even have to pout this time. It was just automatic.

"And, pray tell, what other information would you share with a bloke like me?" he asked, undeniably curious. "And I mean me specifically. Since you seem to think I'm in need of some additional information to better pad my social skills when it comes to the fairer sex, I'd love to hear your views."

This could either be entertaining or irritating depending on what she did.

Like she ever pouted.

Much.

"Hmm, specific social skills to help you survive," Caroline said thoughtfully before tossing back the drink and turning a smile on him. "How much time do you have?"

Nathan filled the glass again just to keep the very good liquor flowing. He figured one of them would need it severely at some point.

"Oh, don't feel constrained by the bonds of time," he said, waving a hand at her and leaning against the bar. "I wanna hear this since you seem to be so sage and wise. Please, share this information with your friend."

"This I'm going to need to sit down for," Caroline decided, taking up a perch on a stool and kicking her feet up on cushion beside her, totally ignoring his friend comment. "Where should I begin? Hmm...what do you know about shoes?"

Oh fuck, they were going to start on footwear. He hadn't realized she'd be quite this thorough but there was no fucking way he was backing out now.

"Shoes for you or shoes for me?" Nathan asked because it made a difference. "Better make sure you clarify your remarks, Caroline, if you want me to think you master class at this."

"Does anyone care about your shoes?" Caroline asked him with a little look that said the answer was no, no, never. "Mine you may have noticed." Though probably only when he was looking at her legs.

"My shoes are timeless," he argued, waving a finger in her face before his eyes flicked down to her shoes. "And comfortable. But yes, I have noticed your shoes on many occasions. Your point being? Don't tell me I'm expected to compliment shoes every single time. There's only so many times I can say 'oh, those flips flops make it evident that you cut your toenails last night. How gorgeous!'"

Caroline made a face, totally needing a drink before answering that. Seriously. "I had a pedicure like, a week ago, which brings us to lesson the first - don't talk about toenail clippings, you'll make a girl puke and no one likes a chain reaction."

"Well, now you're just talking crazy," Nathan said, comically widening his eyes for effect. "Toenails comprise like half of my conversation topics. You're just taking away all my interesting bits now, Caroline. What am I gonna discuss with a girl now? Politics? The fucking weather? Her daddy issues?"

"That all depends on if you're trying to get to know her or just get into her pants. What's your goal, Nate?" Sure it was a potentially loaded question, but if they were dancing around things, she might as well make it worthwhile.

"Can't it be both?" Nathan asked, mentally patting himself on the back for gracefully dodging that potentially loaded question. "They're not mutually exclusive concepts. I could, potentially, be doing both but I don't think complimenting someone on how much blood spatter the heel of their stiletto might cause would be helpful."

"So then you tell me," Caroline replied, not liking that he'd dodged her question. "Since you seem to think you know everything. I will just sit here and listen." And drink his booze, but that was totally implied by her picking up the glass and holding it out for a refill.

She hadn't lasted long there, had she? Nathan tilted his head, trying to figure out what she was thinking before he refilled the glass and went back to leaning against the bar.

"You want me to tell you the various and always successful ways I use to pick up girls?" Nathan asked, wondering why there were about eleventy billion warning signs going off in the back of his head. "Why, Caroline, I didn't know you were so interested in the inner workings of my complex mind."

If he was potentially planning to tell her about all the girls he'd somehow managed to coerce into his bed Caroline was going to need to be drunk before he started.

Down went the drink and up went her smile. "If that's what you want to tell me about, sure! I mean, your mind being what it is...well that should just be endlessly fascinating or something, right? I might even learn something new to try myself if I ever decide to go bisexual."

"Nuh uh," Nathan said, shaking both his head and a finger at her. That hadn't been the question he'd asked. The warning signs were still blaring loudly but he ignored them.

"I asked what you wanted me to tell you," he pointed out. It wasn't the same thing as what he wanted to tell her. "Is that what you want to hear, my various pickup techniques or were you looking for something else informational from the mind of Nathan Young?"

"Yes," Caroline nodded, leaning back to give a little spin on the bar stool. Clearly she should hear both and then have a fit at him about one or the other. "Start with one and move into the other!"
