Due to any number of factors, Karla and Warren had been planning to celebrate their shared birthday a little early this year. They didn't want to interfere with people's graduation or vacation plans, as a last hurrah before finals, making sure their off-island friends would be able to attend ~~mun failure at remembering her own character's birthday~~, all of these had convinced them to throw their birthday party a few days before it actually occurred. As a party, it was intended to be just as much of a celebration of the approaching end of the semester as a birthday party.

What they hadn't intended was the entire island turning into small children over that same weekend. It was a good thing that credit cards and bank accounts had already been charged before hand, or things might have gotten really awkward. As it was, the company hired to make sure the party went off without a hitch got to Fandom, set-up, and drove off before realizing that anything was amiss.

Which was probably for the best, as it meant they didn't have to watch their equipment become slowly transformed into kidlet-appropriate games and activities by Fandom's magic. What had been a party setup designed to appeal to a bunch of jaded teens had become a brightly-colored wonderland of kids' toys.

Don't worry, though. There was still cake.

"You pull this bit under this bit..." Dolf said, and kept talking as he tied her shoes with nice, if a little frumpy, little loops. "There. Now it's your turn."

Karla managed to follow everything up until it was time to wrap the laces around and then pull them through. Then her finger got stuck and when she tried to free it, the whole thing came unraveled.

"See?" Karla said, pointing. "It's impossible!"

Dolf sighed. "Give me your hands," he instructed.

Karla sniffled and rubbed her nose with her wrist before offering her hands to Dolf.

Dolf took them gently, and tried to guide her through the steps again. "You have to keep your fingers a little different," he offered as he got to the tricky bit.

"Ooooh," Karla said, feeling the difference in the way Dolf held her fingers. "Like thaaaat!" She beamed up at him and then back down at her shoe. "I get it! You're a good teacher!"

She crouched down again to untie her other shoe and try to tie it back up. Unfortunately, her memory was not equal to her enthusiasm and she ended up pulling too tightly and creating a giant knot. "Ummm...can you help me again?" she asked, sounding a little sheepish.

Dolf... looked thoroughly unsurprised, if a little sighy. "Of course," he said, leaning down again to try and untangle the knot. "You don't have to pull so hard."

"But if I leave it all loose and floppy, it just falls right out," Karla complained, hunkering down to watch.

"There's always a middle way," Dolf lectured, prying the knot loose. Very, very slowly.

"But it's hard to find!"

It could almost be philosophical, if Karla wasn't whining as she said it.
