Displaced 3rd Floor Party!, The Beach, Friday Evening

As announced by the posters that had appeared around the dorms earlier in the week, there was a party on the beach this warm Friday evening. Or at least, there would be, once people arrived.

The setting was party-like enough, at least. Along with a ~~lovingly modded~~ Bod who'd been drafted in to carry stuff around, Kate had somehow managed to recruit Jeremy to her cause as well, and he'd graciously (because he was still feeling guilty over his doppelganger having made Bod feel bad) offered his financial help for the party. As a result, they had a couple of tables filled with an array of snacks and drinks (regular, Viking, and Egyptian), and the darkening evening was being lightened up by strings of colorful paper lanterns stretched between a few poles they'd brought to the beach for this specific purpose. There was no bonfire as of yet, but Kate wouldn't mind one if someone else wanted to make one their responsibility. She was intending to get a little too tipsy for that.

It was a party, that was what you did.

"Thanks, I thought so too," Kate replied with a little smile. "The island moved just in time pretty much. Otherwise this would've been at the dorms."

"You could have had it at the pool!" Ariel offered, because more people needed to spend time at the pool, apparently, to save her from potential serial murderers. "But I'm glad it worked out as it did. And that we finally moved somewhere warm. I'm okay with the cooler weather, but it's just not as nice, you know?"

"Yeah, plus I think where we are now is kinda more interesting than Iceland." Not that she'd explored much beyond getting food and drinks. The week had been busy. And depressed. "The Vikings got boring after a while."

"They were still fun," said Ariel, who really couldn't get very bored with anything. "But I like the change, too. All the sand! It's great! And the swimming's a little better here, too, and I'm getting a lot more use out of these old seashells now as I expected."

"It's... definitely a strong fashion statement." Yeah, Kate hadn't even noticed those before. "Are those comfortable?"

"Oh, yeah, totally!" Ariel said with a nod. Granted, she'd been wearing them ever since she hit mermaid puberty, but she couldn't imagine ever thinking they were uncomfortable. "I've actually been making a few of them to sell at Pixie Dust, if you ever want a pair for yourself. The trick is just finding shells that are the right size."

"I... might be interested." What? She was trying to figure out what her personal style was, right now! "I have to say, it's nit exactly something I would've thought of on my own."

"It's all the fashion back home," Ariel assured her. "I think it could really pick up here, too. What's your favorite color? I can make sure I've got one in that color for you, and you can come to the shop on Tuesday and try it on."

"Well..." Favorite color was a hard question and needed to be pondered thoroughly. While sipping a drink. "Either red or purple? I can never really decide between those."

"Well," Ariel looked down at her own purple, "maybe we'll go with red then."

Although a thought did strike her: "Unless you want to be like, you know, seashell twins!"

Or quadruplets, depending on how you looked at it.

"Nah, I think we should be individuals," Kate decided after a moment more to think on it. "'Sides, even with red, I'll still kinda match your hair."

"That's true," Ariel said, thinking on this. "How do you feel about orange? Ooh, or yellow!"

"I'm not really feeling the orange," Kate replied, scrunching up her nose. "Oh, ooh, but yellow actually sounds pretty good. It's kind summery, y'know. And bright. And happy."

She liked happy.

And so did Ariel

"Yellow it is, then!" she said with a laugh. "Come by Tuesday, and I'll have some yellow ones ready for you. I think they'll suit you nicely, Kate!"

"I'm sure they will!" The enthusiasm was infectious. Also, alcohol was a great mood enhancer. "You will definitely see me on Tuesday."

"Great!" said Ariel, who bounced to add to the effect before asking, "What else have you been up to, then, Kate, other than putting together this great party?"

"Not much." Oh, liar. "Well, okay, I had to go to England this week for an uh, personal thing." Only it wasn't so personal, and she bit on her lip. "Um, did you know Nathan?"

Ariel blinked a little, her head tilting as she considered Kate's biting her lip. "Sure," she said. "He went back there, right? To England? With all the toothless British chicks."

Kate managed to avoid huffing out a laugh, even though she was pretty sure those words were straight from Nathan's mouth, or at least they sounded like it, and that was both funny and kind of unbearably sad at the same time. Actually, it was easy not to laugh. Frowning won out.

"Well, yeah, he did," she hedged, slowly. "But... Ugh, this feels like entirely the wrong time to say this."

Yeah, Ariel had cleaned it up considerably.

She did not like the sound of all this hedging, though, and was quickly gaining her own frown. "Is everything okay?" she wondered.

"No," Kate said with a quick shake of her head and a steadying breath. "On Wednesday, in England? It was his funeral."

There was...quite a bit of a pause there.

"This Wednesday?" she asked. "His fune--" It looked like Kate wasn't the only one who needed to remember how to breathe for a second. "What happened?"

"There was an accident," Kate replied, considerably more subdued now than she had been just a few moments ago. "He fell. They said it was quick."

"Ohmygosh," said Ariel, settling back a little as this all sort of settled; it was jarring and almost a little difficult to believe. "I...had no idea."

That made...two people she knew that had died and no one really told her until pretty well after the fact. But she shook her head a little, trying to dispel that thought; it seemed somehow selfish.

Kate really wouldn't have faulted for that. About half of her own thoughts about the whole thing had been selfish, to some extent.

"I'm sorry," she offered after another pause to chew on her lip. "I know it's not exactly party appropriate. And it sucks. Which is... an understatement but I think Nathan would approve."
