Displaced 3rd Floor Party!, The Beach, Friday Evening

As announced by the posters that had appeared around the dorms earlier in the week, there was a party on the beach this warm Friday evening. Or at least, there would be, once people arrived.

The setting was party-like enough, at least. Along with a lovingly modded Bod who'd been drafted in to carry stuff around, Kate had somehow managed to recruit Jeremy to her cause as well, and he'd graciously (because he was still feeling guilty over his doppelganger having made Bod feel bad) offered his financial help for the party. As a result, they had a couple of tables filled with an array of snacks and drinks (regular, Viking, and Egyptian), and the darkening evening was being lightened up by strings of colorful paper lanterns stretched between a few poles they'd brought to the beach for this specific purpose. There was no bonfire as of yet, but Kate wouldn't mind one if someone else wanted to make one their responsibility. She was intending to get a little too tipsy for that.

It was a party, that was what you did.

[ooc: OCD up, have at! All students are welcome and won't be discrimated against based on their floor of residence, promise.]

"Why did your ancestors move?" Sov asked, tilting their head away so that Scully could put on the sunscreen more easily.

[and now I need sleep!]

Scully made sure to put some on his/her neck (what was the proper designation there?) and shoulder, and said, "Famine, if I remember what my father said for his grandfather. It was a century or so ago, but there were very few jobs even in places where people weren't starving. Plus the U.S. was encouraging immigration at the time. It was relatively easy to pack up and move... and parts of the U.S. aren't too different."

{sleep well!}

"I think I'd prefer the foggy and cool places," Sov replied with a laugh. Just the sun screen lotion itself felt soothing to their burned skin.

"I'm a coast girl," Scully had to agree. "It's always cooler if there's wind..." She squinted into the sun. "Well. Not if you're right next to a desert."

She capped the tube, and then paused, something that had been niggling at her coming to the fore. "Can I ask you a personal question?"

Sov looked at her. "Sure."

"What do you want to be called?" She'd kind of not been sure here-- and maybe this was an alien aspect that Scully didn't understand, but very carefully, she said, "I can't tell if you're male, or female; him or her. Please don't take that as an insult, I've just been wondering which you prefer."

Sov was surprised, but certainly not insulted. No one had asked this before! "I'm... neither at the moment. Not that time of the month. You don't have that pronoun, so I guess it's fine to use whichever you prefer at the moment."

"At the moment?" Okay, that had not been the answer she was expecting. "So... sometimes, you are one or the other? This is a, hmm. Flexible thing for your people?"

"Yes!" Sov nodded, smiling. "So I'm just getting used to being around people who are, you know, the same gender all the time." Which, on Gethen, would be referred to as being a 'pervert'.

"That has to be confusing for you," Scully sympathized, blinking a little as she tried to comprehend that. "I'm sorry, I have medical training, I find this fascinating. So all of your people do this? All the time? Your gender doesn't-- cement, to one or the other, when you're an adult?" There were fish and a few amphibians who moved from one to the other through their life-cycles on Earth....

"Yes, well, most of us. Some don't due to disease, and that might be cured, but it's very rare," Sov explained. "So, are you going to be a doctor?"

"Yes," Scully said, folding her hands. She'd decided to be up-front about being younger after she got to know people; until then it was easier to put it off. "I work at the Clinic on Thursdays, and I'm taking college courses on the computer that will help. I'm going to be a forensic pathologist, and work for our Federal Bureau of Investigation."

Sov didn't really know what half of that meant, but they got the important part, they assumed. They nodded.

"It must be good to know what you want to do. What you're good at."

[sorry for extreme SP again, headaches.]

"Yes," Scully admitted, not too uncomfortable. She'd known she wanted to be a docto when she was 16, after all. "You don't, yet?"

[no problem! hee.]
