Displaced 3rd Floor Party!, The Beach, Friday Evening

As announced by the posters that had appeared around the dorms earlier in the week, there was a party on the beach this warm Friday evening. Or at least, there would be, once people arrived.

The setting was party-like enough, at least. Along with a lovingly modded Bod who'd been drafted in to carry stuff around, Kate had somehow managed to recruit Jeremy to her cause as well, and he'd graciously (because he was still feeling guilty over his doppelganger having made Bod feel bad) offered his financial help for the party. As a result, they had a couple of tables filled with an array of snacks and drinks (regular, Viking, and Egyptian), and the darkening evening was being lightened up by strings of colorful paper lanterns stretched between a few poles they'd brought to the beach for this specific purpose. There was no bonfire as of yet, but Kate wouldn't mind one if someone else wanted to make one their responsibility. She was intending to get a little too tipsy for that.

It was a party, that was what you did.

"Not a big party animal?" Sam guessed. "Confession time: neither am I. This one doesn't seem as loud and full of...puking drunks."

"If it gets to the puking drunks stage, I think I'll be somewhere else right after that," Annie admitted. She shrugged a little, feeling a little freer to talk since he'd said that. "I didn't really go to a lot of parties at my old school. So I like this one. It's... relaxed."

"Neither did I and so do I," he agreed, nodding and glancing around. "I didn't really like a lot of people at my old school so why would I go stand against their wall for a few hours? No point to it."

He was so a good person to have around. "Why didn't you like them?" Annie wondered.

Shrugging a shoulder, Sam said, "Laziness on my part, maybe? They just weren't people I wanted to hang around, I guess. I didn't care about the stuff they liked, they didn't care about the stuff I liked so we just avoided each other altogether."

Looking back, Sam realized the actual answer was that he just couldn't connect with people, couldn't make friends because he'd always felt off. With the release of his power, he felt a little better but still not completely at ease with making friends.

"That's not so bad. I mean, it's not like you seem like a hard person to hang around or anything," she told him. She found it easy enough, anyway.

"Flatterer," Sam said lightly, trying to wave that compliment away since he wasn't used to them. "Why didn't you go to parties?"

"Uh, I wasn't really... invited?" she said, just a little shyly. "I wasn't really popular. Or popular at all. Kind of made going to parties a little impossible unless you want to get kicked out."

"Popularity," Sam said and made a gagging noise. "That was a big thing in my school too. It wasn't one of the reasons I dropped out but hey, not having to see that on a daily basis? It made working at a burger joint that much more tolerable."

"Wait, you dropped out dropped out? Or just transferred?" she checked. Considering how close she'd come to all out dropping out and getting her GED, she zoned right in on that.

"Dropped out dropped out," he replied, nodding. "For...about a year or so. It was just wasn't something I could really get my head into at the time. I dropped out, moved out and got a job. Maybe not the best life decisions I've ever made."

"Huh," she said. "So you turned it around and decided to go back to school somewhere else?"

"Yeah, after I took some time off," he answered, nodding. "I decided I didn't really have anything to lose, right? I had some things to take care of and once I did, I decided to give it another try. Who knows, maybe I'll drop out again."

He hoped not.

"You can't do that, you just got here," she frowned. "No dropping out!"

"Is that an order?" Sam asked, amused. "It sounds like an order. I don't know if I can disobey a direct order."

"You can't," she said firmly. "It's not allowed."

"I'll do my best to stick around," Sam promised, shrugging. "I've got some free time and nothing to do back home for awhile. My friend's taking care of my other friend and the house. Guess I can spare some time to get an education and try not to die. Right?"

"That mean you'd let me win the class to prevent me from dying?" Sam teased because he couldn't help himself. "That'd be really nice of you."

"You're sneaky," she accused him, pointing a finger at him. "And no. Unless you're saying you wouldn't let me win so I wouldn't die."

Notice she wasn't touting her shiny new badass simulated zombie shooting skills now.

"I'm sneaky?" He didn't think so but it made him laugh anyway. "I don't want anyone to die if that helps."

If they did, he could do something about that but yeah, he still didn't want anyone to die. It was all messy and new and he'd have to bleed and yeah.

"I might let you win. I might not. Ooooh, intrigue. Are you feeling the suspense yet?"

"I'm thinking it's a good thing that I at least have some competition... she said, like she was thinking this over. "It'll keep things from getting boring."

Yeah, because the class stood a chance of being that.

"Are you actually worried about that class getting boring?" Sam asked, raising an eyebrow. "I think that's a classic example of inviting a jinx. We're gonna end up running to freaking Russia in the next class just because the professor can make it happen."

"I am not inviting a jinx," Annie protested. "If we end up running to Russia, it's because the professor is someone who ranks us."

She paused.

"Also if we run to Russia, I'll have you know that running is actually my homework for zombies class."

Zombies. Every mention of that word drew the slightest reactions out of Sam. His eyes widened or his cheek twitched or something small. Most of the time, no looked closed enough to notice.

"You've got homework?" Sam was just going to focus on that and snicker. "How does that work? You just get out in the heat and run like hell? Does your sweat prove you did it?"
