Caritas | Saturday Evening

Chuck was doing an excellent job blocking out the chittering of annoying teenage girls. Basically it took a lot of scotch and knowing that if things got too annoying he could go back into the office and lock the door. But for now he was sitting behind the bar, watching what was going on out of the corner of his eye and smacking Tino with his cane if he refused to do something Caroline or her redneck-voiced little friend asked him to do.

Tino looked miserable. That made the party worth it already.

"Hi!" Miley chirped, sliding into the seat beside him. Still holding her Shirley Temple. Sigh.

"I'm Miley. I... have totally seen your face somewhere, sorry."

Jeremy smiled widely when she showed up next to him. It may have been an automatic reaction to girly presence, but it also looked pretty genuine. "Jeremy Darling," he said, offering his hand to her. "So, you're Miley? I didn't know you'd be so pretty."

Miley giggled, all shy-stuttery-Disney-girl.

"Nice to meet you," she said, shaking his hand. "I read about you! You're, like, famous! We probably know some of the same people. I mean, I'm not famous, but I go to parties and stuff because my dad's famous, and hey, maybe I've seen you around and haven't noticed it!"

...Cute boys made her stuttery. Sorry, Jeremy.

Jeremy thought it was kind of cute, actually. But she'd also just been the first person in over six months to say she'd heard of him in any way, so he probably would've reacted positively no matter how she said things

"Man, no one here knows who I am," he said, grinning at her a bit. "Who's your dad, amybe I know him?"

[identity profile] its-theclimb.livejournal.com 2011-07-23 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
"Robby Ray Stewart," Miley said proudly, in a tone that made it clear she was used to everyone knowing who he was. Except Surreal, but there were freaks of nature everywhere. "He's the guy who sings 'Achy Breaky Heart' and 'I Want My Mullet Back,'" she added helpfully.

It felt weird to be bragging about her dad for a change, but the real reason she went to celebrity parties was so not mentionable here.

"Oh, I think I know him." Jeremy actually wasn't so sure he did, but the thing about knowing a lot of people was that you couldn't always remember everyone, and so you got to be adequate at fibbing. "Or my dad might. I'm sorta more in with the younger crowd, so I can't believe I haven't met you before."

"Maybe it's more of that weird island-ness?" Miley guessed. "Like, everyone keeps saying how we're all from different worlds and stuff?"

She still didn't really get it, but she liked to pretend she did.
stars_and_money: (Turn to you.)

Re: Lounge

[personal profile] stars_and_money 2011-07-23 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
"That's usually it," Jeremy nodded. Not like he really got it, either, but he'd accepted it. "Like, no one here seems to know me and Jules. It was freaky at first."

Re: Lounge

[identity profile] its-theclimb.livejournal.com 2011-07-23 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
"I know, right?" Miley leaned in to disclose a particularly appalling piece of news. "My roommate Surreal has never even heard of Hannah Montana! Like, what kind of world do you have to be from to not even know major rock stars?"

The phrase was "pop star," Miley. Sigh.
stars_and_money: (Seriously?)

Re: Lounge

[personal profile] stars_and_money 2011-07-24 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
"... Isn't she more of a pop star?" Jeremy wondered. Yes, he knew who Hannah Montana was; why limit himself to just gossip from his own world when he had multiversal internet at his disposal? "She doesn't actually exist where I come from, either."

Though there was someone eerily similar.

[identity profile] its-theclimb.livejournal.com 2011-07-24 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Except that Hannah had a song called Rock Star (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_kGeEHFIIss), Jeremy. GOD.

"Oh. She doesn't?" Miley was a little disappointed by that news. "It's so weird how people you think are, like, mega-stars aren't actually as big as you think, right?"
stars_and_money: (See my side.)

Re: Lounge

[personal profile] stars_and_money 2011-07-24 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
"My family is the richest in New York," Jeremy pointed out, with way too much ease but he couldn't help it, it was a fact. "But there are other people from New York here that don't know us. So, either we don't exist, or we're poor in their worlds."

The disdain in that one word was probably enough to convey which option he liked least.

"Just how it works."

[identity profile] its-theclimb.livejournal.com 2011-07-24 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
"Man. This different-worlds thing is so weird." Miley shrugged, leaning back in her chair as she thought that over. "I'm new, so I've had, like, zero time to adjust, but I have a feeling it's still gonna be weird in a week or a month or whatever."
stars_and_money: (Could be good.)

Re: Lounge

[personal profile] stars_and_money 2011-07-24 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
"It is," Jeremy said, which wasn't particularly reassuring, but maybe what he said next was. "But you just need to chill, you know? Take it as it comes, just roll with the punches. You'll be fine."

Re: Lounge

[identity profile] its-theclimb.livejournal.com 2011-07-24 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
That was reassuring! Actually, it made a ton of sense.

"Roll with the punches," Miley repeated thoughtfully. "That could totally work. I mean, when you get turned into, like, ponies and whatever, that's kind of the only thing you can do." She tilted her head, absorbing this piece of news. "Thanks!"
stars_and_money: (No cause for emo.)

Re: Lounge

[personal profile] stars_and_money 2011-07-24 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
"Glad to help," Jeremy smiled. "So, apart from the ponies and the multiple universes and other crap, how have you been settling in? You kinda seem like the type to be good at the socializing thing, at least."

Re: Lounge

[identity profile] its-theclimb.livejournal.com 2011-07-24 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
Jeremy was so good at the complimenting thing. Miley was starting to like him more and more. And as that happened, he grew steadily cuter in her eyes.

Run for your LIFE, Jeremy.

"Thanks," she giggled. "And... I think I'm doing okay. At first I felt about as out of place as a rooster in a pigpen, but it started to feel natural pretty quick. How about you? How long've you been here?"
stars_and_money: (Even smiling can be lazy.)

Re: Lounge

[personal profile] stars_and_money 2011-07-24 10:50 am (UTC)(link)
Jeremy was one day going to date his sister's mortal frenemy. It was obvious he had more charm than sense of self-preservation.

"Six months and counting," he shared easily. "Jules and me moved here in January. It was a culture shock but I think we've been pretty chill, all in all."

Re: Lounge

[identity profile] its-theclimb.livejournal.com 2011-07-24 01:09 pm (UTC)(link)
"You make it sound like it's some kind of twelve-step program," Miley laughed. "You know, like, 'Hi, I'm Jeremy, I've been here for six months...'"

Yes, Miley, no need to explain the joke.
stars_and_money: (Effortlessly cute.)

Re: Lounge

[personal profile] stars_and_money 2011-07-24 02:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Jeremy laughed anyway. He was easy like that.

"Totally," he said. "Except you don't get clean, you just get more used to the freaky."

Re: Lounge

[identity profile] its-theclimb.livejournal.com 2011-07-24 03:25 pm (UTC)(link)
"I'll keep that in mind," she laughed, giving Jeremy a flirty little smile. "Hey, I could sure use someone who's already accustomed to the freaky to be, like, my guide." Never mind that she already had Jack McCallister for that. A pick-up line was a pick-up line. Batting her eyelashes, she asked, "You interested?"
stars_and_money: (Make you want this.)

Re: Lounge

[personal profile] stars_and_money 2011-07-24 04:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Jeremy's smile widened, not that it had been particularly faint to begin with. Also, it was a little smirkier. "Sure," he said. "I'm an excellent guide and totally readily available to help."

One of those things was more true than the other.

Re: Lounge

[identity profile] its-theclimb.livejournal.com 2011-07-24 05:16 pm (UTC)(link)
"Good," Miley said decisively. "'Cause I like this place so far, but with some of the stuff, I'm about as lost as a donkey in a salt marsh."

...Colloquialisms, Jeremy. Learn to love them.
stars_and_money: (All good things.)

Re: Lounge

[personal profile] stars_and_money 2011-07-24 05:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Please, Jeremy used his own obscure slang. He was going to be fine.

"I... am going to guess that means really lost," he replied. "But no worries, I am totally here for you, and I'm pretty good with the weird."

And talking to pretty girls.

Re: Lounge

[identity profile] its-theclimb.livejournal.com 2011-07-24 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yay!" Miley flashed Jeremy her most radiant smile that had earned her her cheesy rhyming nickname, then batted her eyelashes at him one more time to make sure he got the message. "Thanks, Jeremy!"
