Parents' Weekend Meet & Greet, The Park, Friday Afternoon

The day had dawned crisp and clear, but by the time afternoon had rolled around... it was really still kind of ridiculously warm for fall. People could probably get away with not wearing a sweater, even.

Which made rather good weather for a picnic, convenient since that was the traditional way of kicking off the Fandom High Parents' (and assorted other relatives, friends, acquaintances, or sometimes even enemies, but that was harder to fit nicely on a banner) Weekend. So there were rows of picnic tables decked out in blue and yellow, laid out with just about any sort of foodstuff one could imagine. And just in case there was any lingering doubt as to the purpose of the picnic, a glittery banner (Petra's work, naturally) adorned the registration tables:

Surprised to suddenly find himself in a vampiric bear hug, Tyler laughed and attempted to return the sentiment with the arm not holding up his plate. "What can I say? My mom's been driving me crazy and your offer was too good to refuse."

"See, now that is what friends are for," Caroline replied with a grin, giving his arm a squeeze as she drew back. "You look just the same. God, it's so weird to see anyone from home. I mean, Stefan visited once, but that was like, six months ago and I had totally given up on seeing a familiar face that went along with the right name."

Tyler didn't know why Stefan would come to see Caroline, but then, he was there so anything was possible. "Six months? You weren't kidding about the freaky time thing in your note, huh?" Totally insane.

"That's what happens when you go to a crazy magical school," she answered, taking a quick glance to see who might be overhearing her. It wouldn't be very nice to talk about all this with normal people around.

"Must be nice," he considered if that would mean he'd skip some transformations, like maybe the upcoming second full moon he was already dreading. "So you said before you want me to give the werewolf perspective, right? You gonna explain what the hell that means?"

"Uh yes, just not here," Caroline told him, stepping onto her tip toes to spy a too-tall boy in the crowd. "Though, I do want you to meet someone here, assuming he didn't forget or get lost in the food."

Oh man, Tyler wasn't sure he wanted to know who he'd been brought to town to meet, but his eyebrow lifted in curiosity. "Oh yeah?" Wasn't Bonnie or someone better for this B-F-F crap?

"Uh huh," she nodded, using his shoulder for a little extra leverage. "My boyfriend's supposed to be around here somewhere..."

Well, there went the thought that this whole visit was the start of some long distance booty call thing. "Are you ever single, Forbes?"

"Yeah, isn't Matt still your best friend?" she checked, reminding him of just how badly that had ended.

His nose crinkled like she should understand how complicated that was. "It's different with all the secrets. We haven't been hanging out so much lately."

"I know how that goes," she sighed, remembering all too well what had happened with Matt. "But I'm basically incapable of lying to this one so no big secrets to create issues. He knows I'm a vampire and it's cool since he's another sort of werewolf-slash-shape shifter thing. So obviously you two will have tons in common, right?"

"Right." Tyler was admittedly curious to meet another wolf, but not really thrilled that Caroline was all gung ho for him to get chummy with her newest boyfriend. God knew how long her relationships generally lasted.

It didn't take long for Jake to materialise beside them. Not when she'd been hanging on this guy and considering how he smelled of wolf (but not quite like his pack did), it wasn't all that hard to guess who she was talking to. It wasn't all that hard to notice the absence of what was supposed to be Caroline's girl friend either.

"Tyler, right?" Jake said, not waiting for Caroline to make introductions and he brushed his fingers down the small of her back as he held out his other hand towards Tyler.

This guy was a lot to take in, huge in a way Tyler had totally not expected and a little more native than he thought the pageant queen would go for. But Tyler was a Lockwood and used to greeting everyone he met with a smile, so it was plastered on his face as he shook this guy's hand. "That's right. You must be the new boyfriend."

"Jacob Black," Caroline supplied, feeling the possessive way Jake's hand was pulling her to his side and wondering just how badly things were about to go though she continued with the happy faces. "Meet Tyler Lockwood." Since Elena had obviously flaked.

"Nice to meet you," Jake said, possibly testing the werewolf strength before he let go. At least he was playing nice, as long as Caroline didn't mind as he rested his hand on the small of her back. "Caroline's told a little bit about you. Well, mostly the wolf part."

"Caroline mentioned you were different, but by your grip I'm guessing you don't need a full moon for your strength to peak," Tyler remarked, trying not to shake out his hand as Jake let go, wondering how his own heightened strength would compare.

"You guessed right," Jake nodded. "I don't need the moon and I don't lose control. I'm still in charge when I change."

"Good for you, man." The look Tyler sent Caroline conveyed just how thrilled he was she invited him, really. "Seems we've got nothing in common after all. Well, other than Caroline, but we've gotta save something to talk about later." God, he had all weekend, at least he could entertain himself.

She broke away from Jake's hand to smack Tyler's shoulder in a way that looked friendly but was intended to hurt him. "He's kidding," she told Jake, ignoring the way her friend was laughing.

No, Jake didn't think he was. "It's not that simple either," he assured him, but he wasn't entirely sure what else to say. Subject change then. "So Fandom hasn't broken your brain yet?"

Tyler would take that topic change and run with it...for a minute. "Nah, I'm digging it. You guys all seem really open about being freaks. Back home it's just me and Forbes, or I guess just me for the last few weeks."

She shot Jake a look, hoping he'd go along with that low number of freaks. "Yeah, it's easier here. I couldn't keep the vampire thing silent with people like Jake around to smell it on me."

"It's not exactly we talk about back home either. My pack knows and the leeches obviously, but I wasn't even allowed to speak of it," Jake shrugged. "It's different here. Kind of pointless to keep it secret when the person you're talking to is from the past or from outer space."
