Caritas- Saturday

The place was open tonight, and hopefully people had actually heard about or seen the signs for the Over 18 party. Otherwise... this was going to be lame, oops.

The bar was open in case anyone wanted to drink (imagine that), and the floor in the back room had been mostly cleared with the tables pushed back so people could mingle or eventually sleep if they ended up not wanting to trudge home later.

And there was a sign out.

Hello, incentive.

[So I am off to drive the sidestreets up to LA on a spare tire and will be trying to ping from my phone, LJ permitting. If not, I will ping back as soon as I get back omg.]

Hayley peered over at Jono, her face an expression of niggling curiosity.

"You know," she said, scratching almost idly at her cheek with a finger, "you look awfully familiar."

"... There are a few possible reasons for that," Jono noted, raising an eyebrow at her. "I used to go to school here. Or maybe it's just the face. I have one of those faces."

... It was sad that that was true.

You do," Hayley said, thinking about it. "I used to go to school here too. But it's been awhile since I was around. Just moved back to the island this week."

She really couldn't place his face, and it was bothering her.

Jono squinted her her thoughtfully. He might have seen her face about here or there at some point, but she wasn't anybody he'd ever been particularly close to, if he had.

"You wouldn't by any chance remember a bloke, skinny as hell, dressed in all-black leather who kept the bottom of his face covered at all times?"

"The guy who was dating Didi?" Hayley said, that being her frame of reference. "You know, you kinda have the same eyes. Were you brothers or something?"

Jono swallowed a little at the mention of Didi- it still stung a bit, and he still had her letter in his pocket after all this time. But it wasn't so raw. And she was still out there, so... so he was more or less okay.

He shrugged.

"I'm th'same person," he said, a little more softly than he'd been speaking before. "Jono Starsmore. It's just been... a very complicated few years."

"You can say that again," Hayley said with a little sigh. "Hayley Fitzpatrick. Life sure gets weird after high school, huh?"

Understatement.

Major, major understatement.

"I wouldn't have minded being held back a few years, really," Jono mused, nodding a little. "I might've missed a lot of neat little messes back home, if I had."

"Well, here's to coming home," Hayley said, raising her drink in a sort of toast. "Or... back where we belong. May it be relatively mess free."

Jono lifted his own glass at that, smiling just a bit, too.

"Relatively," he agreed, "because if we ask for perfection, you know the island will just laugh at us."

"The worst is probably behind us," Hayley said. "I mean, I hope I never get eaten by something that eats whole worlds again, that's for sure."

Jono grimaced a bit. Oh, the Nothing.

"I managed to dodge that particular bullet," he admitted. "Glad we could undo it before it was too late, really."

"No kiddin'," Hayley said with a nod. "You know, nobody back in Gotham City even noticed it happened? People kept lookin' at me like I was crazy when I'd ask them about it."

She got a small pout on her face after saying that. "I hate it when people look at me like that."

"I mostly just get the condescending look that says that they believe that I'm an inept child," Jono sighed. "For what it's worth, you absolutely weren't imagining the Nothing. But they won't remember it unless they've spent time here on the island, too."

"Which is exactly one of them," Hayley said. "But that was only a short visit so I think it didn't count. He's kind of a jerk, any way. Never trust a guy who thinks a bow and arrow is macho."

Sage advice from Hayley Fitzpatrick.

"... No, generally that's a bad idea," Jono agreed after a moment's consideration. "At least we believe you here, though."

Here was good for that sort of thing!

"On most things, at least," Hayley said with a little smile. "I'm definitely glad to be back. And already have a place to stay and a job. I work pretty fast."

"I managed that within a day or two of arriving here, myself," Jono noted, chuckling. "Necessity can push people to accomplishing a good deal in no time at all, I suppose. Where are you working, luv?"

"Oh, just at Luke's for right now," Hayley said with a shrug. "He's very nice, and I got lots of waitress experience, so it's a bit of a good fit. Even if it comes with a giant freezer you could get lost in."

"How about you? You got a great gig somewhere?"

"Musical directing," Jono replied, smiling. He was pretty obviously pleased with that fact. "Down at the Boards. I've always been a fan of music, so being able to get involved in making it happen... I lucked out."

"Like Broadway stuff?" Hayley asked. "I never really did much singing or anything before, but that sounds really nice. Especially if you like doing that."

"Well, we haven't strictly touched on Broadway yet," Jono mused, "but our next show did have a couple of Broadway runs. We're actually holding auditions for Petey Sci-Fi starting tomorrow. You ever heard of that one?"

Generally, the people who were the sort to like it were the ones who knew it existed, and everyone else seemed to go through life either traumatized or blissfully ignorant.

Cult classics.

Or some of them were from the sixties.

"I never heard of that before," Hayley said with a sheepish smile. "What's it about? Aliens and space and stuff?"

"And stuff," Jono agreed. "Though it's a bit... risqué, perhaps. Although if you don't have an aversion to homosexuality and corsets, it's a fun production to be a part of."

He still hadn't decided if he was willing to let the audience throw rice and toilet paper on the night of the show, so he was leaving that part out. For now.

Hayley started giggling. "Oh, you really have no idea," she said.

This was the girl who dressed up like a harlequin jester to impress a queenpin of crime that dressed like a clown.
