The Beach, Wednesday Evening

It was the end of the term. A bunch of people Dante knew were leaving. Others were staying, but they still deserved a decent send-off to the summer. Besides, screw it, they'd all earned a distraction. So after sending text messages to a whole bunch of people on the island, Dante pulled on a pair of black and red swim trunks (hey, Isabela had asked), bought a cheap one-use barbecue... thing and a ton of meat, and made his way down to the beach.

Picked up a lost volleyball on the way, too.

And okay, if he could rope someone else into manning the barbecue, he would. But right now, he'd set it up, get a nice fire going, and then fantasize about Iz and Ada playing beach volleyball.

Ugh. Ringo shot Dante a half-hearted glare. How had they ended up on the same team? It was probably some conspiracy on his part, wasn't it?

Dante shrugged, grinning. "Hey, Ringo, guess you're on a winning team for once."

She stuck her tongue out at him. "You're just lucky that I'm here to carry your dead weight."

Big words for a girl who'd never played volleyball outside of a school gym. Especially one with her (lack of) height.

"You can carry anything?" Dante asked, innocently.

And tossed the ball at her.

Ringo caught it. With both hands, obviously, since her fingers weren't long enough to handle the thing with just one hand.

She wasn't even fully sure what Dante was insinuating, but Dante sounding "innocent" definitely put her on guard. "And what if I say yes?"

"It was an insult, Ringo."

Dante rolled his eyes.

"You know how to play this game?"

"Of course!" Which, to be fair, she probably would have said even if she didn't.

"Back in junior high, it was pretty common in gym class."

"What about you?" Because she was pretty sure he hadn't learned in junior high gym class.

"Duh," Dante said. "Slept with a girl on a high school volleyball team once."

He smirked.

Ringo rolled her eyes. "Pretty sure that volleyball skills aren't an sexually transmitted infection."

Dante rolled his eyes right back. "I met her while her team was playing, dumbass."

"You went to a high school volleyball game to pick up chicks?"

Somehow that didn't actually sound that unlikely to her.

Dante shrugged. "Why not?" he said. "I was in the neighborhood."

And they didn't believe your fake IDs quite as easily when you were a few days into fifteen.

Well, that was a pretty typical Dante answer, so Ringo shrugged.

Then grinned sort of slyly up at him. "And you're telling me that you actually paid attention to the game with all those girls jumping around?"

"I had to figure out who was winning, right?" Dante said.

"I suppose that knowing whether you were consoling your new friend on a tough loss, or celebrating a win, would kind of be useful if you didn't want to get slapped."

"Exactly," Dante said, smirking. "Now you're getting it."

"You still go to sporting events to pick people up?" Ringo asked, rolling her eyes in something like amusement.

"Don't really need to these days," Dante said. "But hey, hard to forget a good home run."

Yeah, there was another eyeroll for good measure, then Ringo shrugged expressively.

"Well, now I know the amazing story of how you learned to play volleyball." She cocked her head. "Time to find out if you're any good."

Dante shrugged. "I think I can take Ada and Isabela," he said.

Well, actually he knew he could, but he was going to spare Ringo that innuendo.

"I don't know, Isabela's pretty athletic, right?"

If Ringo was better at innuendo, she'd probably realize what she'd just said.

Yeah, this time Dante couldn't quite contain it.

Though in this case, 'it' was just a really amused expression.

"Shut up," Ringo complained with a sigh.

Because he'd been making that expression quite loudly.
