The nicest part of winter was how quickly the sun went down in the evenings--gave a vampire a lot more time to get things done before bleeding from the ears and eyes, catching fire, and dying, etc., etc.

Finally back from settling some accounts in Louisiana (and jacking up the prices at Fangtasia in preparation for the Mardi Gras crowds), Eric was back in Fandom, settled into his normal spot well away from the bar.

Vampires don't serve humans, thank you very much. That's what Tiny was for.

"I suppose that depends on how hell-bent Skywalker is on making us all socialize," Kanan mused. "Maybe now that we're all here, he'll leave us to our own devices."

"There are too many to keep track of, anyway," Rey reasoned. "Why do you feel lost here?"

"Well, for starters, I don't exactly get along with the host," Kanan admitted, glancing Anakin's way. "We had a.... ah... difference of opinion over how I ought to cope with a parents weekend guest some time back, and I'm just petty enough to hold a grudge."

In fairness, Darth Vader showing up on the island to shadow one of the students had been a bit unsettling.

"Oh. Well, at least there are plenty of people who aren't him here?" Rey tried.

"Yeah, and here's hoping he's distracted with them long enough he doesn't notice when I slip out, either," Kanan chuckled, shaking his head.

Kanan was probably not going to slip out.

There was a bar.

"And if you two don't get along, you can probably get away with doing whatever you want anyway," she pointed out.

"So long as I don't have to live it down later," Kanan replied. "Not that I'm going to make a trip to the bar into politics or anything like that. But that man really is insufferably when he gets his mind set on something."

Said the pot, referring to the kettle.

"Aren't most people?"

Said the pot, referring to herself and all like-minded kettles.

"I'm really beginning to wonder," Kanan confessed, huffing a little laugh and shaking his head. "At least around here, they seem to be. I've known a few pushovers in my time, too."

"Yeah, pushovers wouldn't do well in this town," Rey said thoughtfully. "We get invaded too much."

"Between invasions and just dealing with the rest of us, they'd probably either grow a spine or give up and take off pretty quickly, at least."

Or, Kanan hoped they would, anyway. Fandom really was no place for the faint of heart.

"If they can," Rey added.

As someone who couldn't.

"If they can," Kanan allowed, as someone who only recently had been able to, again. "Though I'd be lying if I said I hadn't ever considered disappearing off across the Causeway and just figuring things out as I go, before."

Going back had rarely ever been an option for Kanan anyway.

"But you didn't," Rey said, partly as a question.

"I didn't want to get stuck on some backrocket planet with no real space travel to speak of," Kanan explained. "... At first. Though there were a few planets along the way that were tempting. Fandom was doing a bit of travel around the same time I showed up."

He'd nearly hopped off on Endor and just resigned himself to hoping someone with a ship passed by eventually.

He'd also nearly stayed behind on Ilium, because sticking around on a planet full of attractive blue people who did have space travel had been a pretty compelling prospect, too.

"You don't worry that you would accidentally end up somewhere worse?" she asked.

"I can handle worse," Kanan replied. "Worse where I don't have a history that people can trace is still better than back home with a trail behind me. But it's not much of an issue here now, since I'm pretty resigned to either sticking around or going back home."

"And if the island travels somewhere decent again?" she wondered.

"If it does that these days? I'll probably stick around here," Kanan decided. "I've had some time to wrap my head around the place. I've got things to do."

And he'd have to leave Hera behind. That wasn't terrbily likely to happen now.
