Devil's Nest, Saturday, January 27. 2018

The nicest part of winter was how quickly the sun went down in the evenings--gave a vampire a lot more time to get things done before bleeding from the ears and eyes, catching fire, and dying, etc., etc.

Finally back from settling some accounts in Louisiana (and jacking up the prices at Fangtasia in preparation for the Mardi Gras crowds), Eric was back in Fandom, settled into his normal spot well away from the bar.

Vampires don't serve humans, thank you very much. That's what Tiny was for.

"Archaeology!" Or as she sometimes called it, graverobbing with paperwork.

"Huh," Kanan replied, actually looking intrigued at that. If anyone in the galaxy had any idea of surviving Jedi relics...

He wasn't going to let himself chase that train of thought.

"I imagine that's taken you some interesting places, huh?"

Okay. He wasn't going to let himself chase that train of thought far.

Chasing that line of thought was a bad idea, Kanan.

"If we're defining interesting as having a lot of people trying to shoot you, yeah."

And the occasional actually historically significant site.

"Yeah, academia is a hell of a lot different than I remember it," Kanan noted, an eyebrow raising a little. "But I suppose at least if you're being shot at, you're probably not bored."

To say the least.

"Of course, given my last boss's definition of interesting, most people would probably prefer the boredom."

"Well, now I have to ask what your last boss thought of as interesting," Kanan pointed out.

"I worked for Darth Vader."

So Kanan probably didn't want to know.

Judging by the way Kanan's mouth kind of fell open and hung that way, the narrative was probably on to something, there.

"Doing what?"

Why were you going down this rabbit hole, Kanan? Did you enjoy freaking out?

"...archaeology?"

Trust to the narrative, and believe the blatant lie, Kanan, it would save you many sleepless nights.

Kanan was squinting in a way that suggested that he did not believe for a moment that Darth Vader would have an iota of interest in archaeology.

"And he's your former employer?"

That was probably the safer route to take this conversation. Or at least the marginally saner one.

Just keep telling yourself that, Jarrus.

"He terminated my contract."

Beat.

"By throwing me out an airlock."

Was it bad that Kanan felt a little better about this after that? Not that he liked that anybody had been thrown out an airlock - he'd blown himself out an airlock once, and once had been more than enough - but because that was a pretty final way of telling somebody that they were no longer employed?

"Former employer it is," he agreed. "Hell, that must've been some contract."

Contract implied Aphra had had a choice in starting said employment. "A nasty one."

"The ones that end in being blown out an airlock usually are," Kanan agreed. "How'd you make it through that one alive, anyway?"

He'd have to take notes. He'd mostly just trusted the Force and gotten a timely rescue, that one time.

"The airlock was the contingency plan."

Yes, the cold, harsh, unforgiving vacuum of space had been safest option.

Kanan didn't want to sit there with his mouth hanging open. He really didn't. But, well, she had been dealing with Vader. He'd blown himself through an airlock and all he'd been dealing with were a handful of clones.

"Actually, that makes perfect sense," he allowed.
