Mauvaise Chance Apartments - Early, Early, God Awful Early Saturday Morning

It had been a normal, peaceful morning that was so early it was practically the night before still. If one wanted to be specific. Or if they were still constrained by the tyrant of time.

Then a piercing noise sounded throughout the building as a fire alarm went off.

Because why get a good night's sleep when you could be dragged out of bed to wait on the tiny, under-worked Fandom Fire Department to come make sure everything was fine?

Karolina looked like she was about to fall back to sleep standing up. It would probably be extra inadvisable for a tall chick like her but look, keeping her eyes open was hard, okay?

Also, was anyone surprised she was wearing rainbow-themed pajamas? Because they really shouldn't be.

"Perhaps if you move over toward the tree?" Jaskier suggested loudly. He gestured over to where Silver was sullenly leaning.

Make it a sleeping tree. Which was now a thing.

Karolina gave him a groggy, slightly offended look. Because of the loudness. Even though the alarm was still going off.

Look, she was tired. Her thought processes weren't what they could have been.

"No, thanks."

Look, he couldn't be heard at his normal voice. He had to project.

Which he was very good at.

"Are you certain?"

"Yes."

But she probably shouldn't have been.

Which was why Jaskier was giving her a very doubtful look. Very doubtful.

"I'm fine," Karolina insisted, after a moment with that look. "My girlfriend's not going to let me, like... fall over or anything."

Probably.

"Is she nearby?" Jaskier was going to end up writing a ballad of their love, wasn't he?

Karolina waved vaguely in Beau's general direction.

"The angry one with the staff. Beau."

Yeeeep. Definitely a ballad or two dedicated to their combined beauty.

"Ahhh. I knew I should have brought my notebook with me."

"That look is very you," Liam decided, obnoxiously cheerful for whatever hour this was.

Was he just trying to piss everyone off?

... Okay, so, it was much harder to achieve that with Karolina, actually. But she looked kind of miserable?

"Thanks, I guess."

Hey, it wasn't his fault his particular physiology meant he thrived on very little sleep!

"I'm sure it'll be over soon?" he offered.

No, but not toning down his chipperness was clearly a choice.

Karolina pushed her tangly hair back and away from her face with a slightly uncoordinated hand, and sighed. "Hopefully, yeah." Because she was so tired.

Hey, he wasn't chipper, just... far more cheerful at the prospect of being awake at this hour than anyone else in the vicinity. Which, let's face it, wasn't exactly a high bar.

"I'm going on a coffee run," he offered. "You want something?"

Karolina shook her head.

"I'm hoping to go back to bed when this is over," she said, by way of explanation. "Unfortunately." Because coffee and/or sugar sounded amazing, but either was likely to wreck her sleep.

Beau definitely wasn't surprised about the pajamas.

She didn't look quite as asleep, but when you spent enough nights getting kicked out of your bedroll because kobolds were trying to steal your gear again, you sort of learned to wake up quickly. Which did not mean she enjoyed it.

"Do you want --" Look, she knew how much Karolina valued her sleep, which was why she was rubbing her eyes with one hand and holding the other one out to offer Karolina her staff to lean on. Or herself, maybe. Whichever.

Karolina shook her head. "No, I'm good."

No, she wasn't. She was practically swaying in place. Maybe she should have taken Jaskier's advice about going over to the tree with the pirate.

"Kar, you're gonna fall over any second," Beau countered. "Kinda trying to avoid that outcome here, you know what I'm saying?"

She made another little grumbly noise.

"Whose fuckin' idea was this, I'm gonna fuckin' kick their ass."

Karolina just responded with a whine.

No, really. She just made a noise, and that was it.

"Yeah, I mean, same," Beau told her, making a noise that was somewhere between a sigh and a yawn as she tried to position herself in front of Karolina. Just offering her services as a kind of standing pillow, or something like that.

Karolina yawned, too. Magnificently.

And then relented with her stubborness, at least wrapping her arm around Beau's shoulders for a little extra support.

"Was it that hard?" Beau teased her gently. "I thought it was my job to be the pain in the ass about being taken care of and all that shit."

Karolina made another whiney noise. Sorry, Beau, she'd made the effort of actual words with other people, but you were just getting... this.

And Karolina leaning against her a little more.

It was fine. There were only so many words you could be expected to manage in situations like this anyway; Beau totally got that.

She just reached up and put her hand on the arm around her shoulders, squeezing lightly as if to say she wasn't going anywhere.

(The whiney noises were cute, anyway.)
