It had been a normal, peaceful morning that was so early it was practically the night before still. If one wanted to be specific. Or if they were still constrained by the tyrant of time.

Then a piercing noise sounded throughout the building as a fire alarm went off.

Because why get a good night's sleep when you could be dragged out of bed to wait on the tiny, under-worked Fandom Fire Department to come make sure everything was fine?

"Stand down," Steve teased, smiling in his sleep shorts and definitely-too-tight Newark PD t-shirt.

With his own weapon tucked away not dirty.

Jesse rolled her eyes, and glanced over at him, registering the t-shirt for a second and deciding to think absolutely nothing about it in the next.

"Safety precaution," she said, for the second time that night.

"Completely understandable," Steve said, nodding. "I brought mine, too."

If he had a dollar for every time he'd been jumped at home, he'd have more than a few dollars.

"Sirens were going off, you don't know what's going to happen," Jesse agreed.

And that whole 'don't want to run the risk of a burglar grabbing it' thing.

"Exactly! Danny thinks that's weird," Steve said. "Danny is wrong."

"Danny might not be used to things trying to kill him in the middle of the night?" offered Jesse.

Definitely giving up on pretending to be normal, here.

Steve nodded. "Yeah, that's probably it."

That would change.

"He'll learn," he added.

"I wouldn't tell him that in that voice," Jesse ventured, "That sounds vaguely threatening."

"He's used to me sounding vaguely threatening," Steve said. "I think he finds it soothing."

Probably not, Steve.

"Does anybody actually find that soothing?" Jesse asked dryly.

"It's soothing to feel protected in your home?" Steve tried.

"Less soothing to be told to expect people attacking you in the middle of the night."
