Caritas; Wednesday [01/13].

A few pizzas had been randomly delivered to the bar that evening, which was great, because who didn't love pizza to go with their jello shots? There was plenty of it, too, so Summer was quick to update her special's board:

Wednesday Specials!
Free Pizza with each Jello Shot!
Root Beer Barrel
Winter Berry Punch
Cottage Cheese and Salmon

And here she figured the idea of chasing a bite of pizza with a cottage cheese and salmon jello shot would be the most disgusting thing she'd encounter that day, until she turned around and discovered quite possibly the most horrific thing her poor eyes had ever seen.

Which was saying a lot, you guys!

"Tino," she said, slowly, with the reservation of someone who wasn't sure she really wanted an answer to the question she was about to ask, "what are you doing?"

"It's too hot," Tino explained, as he ran his slice of pizza under the stream of cold water in the sink, "so I'm cooling it down."

"...What. The hell...?"

"Oh, no, she'd go stir crazy on a small island like this," said Lucifer, who had on occasion gone stir crazy on a small island like this. "She's a demonic friend of mine with some interesting facial features she tends to glamour over."

"Oh." Someone from somewhere else at least meant there wasn't another person Stark had managed to never even hear of here. "Glamour over how?" He was curious about these 'interesting facial features' as well but that felt rude to question.

"She makes sure it looks like a regular human's face most of the time," Lucifer offered.

Since it was a little on the creepy side when she didn't. "So what's your story? Horrifying scar from a bar fight?"

"No scars," Stark said. There wasn't any skin there to scar! "And no bar fights that I recall." He'd never spent much time in bars until recently. "It's...energy. The mask keeps it in."

"Half your face is made of energy," Lucifer echoed, his eyebrows sliding up. "My mother had a similar problem. Of course Her energy tended to poke holes in people if it seeped out."

"It's more energy where my face would be than my face being made of energy," Stark said after a moment. "Looks like light. I glow."

"Your mother is made of energy and pokes holes in people?" Well, now he was very curious what your deal was, Lucifer.

"Must be hell at night unless you wear that mask to bed," Lucifer mused thoughtfully. He sipped his drink. "My mother is the Divine Goddess," he explained, "and yes, I know everyone believes their mother is a goddess, but mine actually is. She's made entirely of energy, but when She escaped imprisonment, She tried to cram Herself into a human. Turns out your fragile bodies can't quite handle that, so she started..."

He hesitated for a moment, lowered his glass, and said, "...leaking."

"It only comes off rarely," Stark said. "And not for long if I can help it. Not when I sleep."

He paused. "Which Goddess?" There were so many out there. "And not my fragile bodies. Not a human. Banik."

"The Goddess," Lucifer said lightly. "You know, the one responsible for half of all creation-- ah, even the actual humans don't know of Her. She and my Father created the universe."

"I didn't know," Stark said. "What does that make you, if your parents created the universe?"

He had heard some interesting claims before. This might be the most impressive one yet. "Never met a deity. I knew someone who had."

"I'm not a deity, just divine," Lucifer clarified. "And the black sheep of the family. I'm an angel. Or a celestial, if you prefer."

Beat.

"I was made in this body, so unlike you and darling mum, I don't have energy coming out of inconvenient cavities."

"I..." How did you respond to a claim of divinity? That was not something Stark had ever considered before this conversation.

"Don't think I've ever met someone divine, either. Certainly no angels." There were not a lot of angels at his end of the galaxy to be met.

"I'm a Stykera." If his parents were responsible for creating the universe, maybe that statement made sense. The word hadn't been familiar to anyone else on the island, ever, but perhaps this time it might be.

Lucifer tilted his head, puzzled. "That word sounds familiar," he said.

He spoke all languages in creation.

That did not mean he always had context for what something meant.

"Does it? It never does, here." To be fair it hadn't always before he was here, either.

"We're-," he started, then shook his head. He was the only one here and it wasn't as if he'd seen many others recently. Or ever. "I'm 'attuned to the dying.' I can help them cross over, to the Other Side. Among other things." There was not, thankfully, much call for that on this island.

"Ah," Lucifer said. He lifted his glass. "Well, I used to run part of the 'Other Side'. The warmer, less pleasant side."

"I wasn't aware anyone ran any of it. Any of them." That was a bit much for Stark to take in, honestly.

"They were always just...there. How does that work? Why?"

"Because my Father feels sinners need to be punished, so all you living beings need to hop through any number of hoops you can't actually see in hopes of making it to the good side," Lucifer said pleasantly. "Well, that and your own guilt tends to make you feel like you should get in trouble when you die."

"What? I. No. That's not...no."

Stark really should have had more than the one jello shot tonight. Much more. There had only been the one human and he had certainly not sent that Crichton off to be punished after his death.

"The ones who would deserve punishment never think they do."

"That's the celestial joke, isn't it?" Lucifer mused ~~which his canon hadn't actually addressed yet~~. "Either way, I'm now retired."

And he was drinking as much decent liquor as he could.

"I need another drink," Stark said, staring intently at a spot on the bar. Then he could think on this before responding. Tino might have been a pizza-rinsing monster but he was still a reasonable bartender at times and slid a glass across the bar.

"That doesn't seem the sort of job where retirement is an option," he said eventually.

"Well, I escaped. Multiple times," Lucifer said. "Suppose they had to give up eventually."

He waved at the drink. "That one's on me."

"Thank you," Stark said softly, raising the glass.

"And...good. Glad you escaped." Because if you'd enjoyed that job Stark was going to be concerned and because he had very strong feelings on the subject of being held somewhere against your will.

"I get that expression on my face when I have to deal with my family, so that's only fair," Lucifer said lightly, waving Tino over for another scotch. "Yes, I'm quite glad of it. Hell is miserable. Though I suppose that's what it's supposed to be."

"I can imagine." Well, he probably couldn't really but Stark had spent a while being tortured and imprisoned and had some idea.

"I don't...you're here. And you were there. How? It's not meant...none of them are meant to be physical realms. I thought."

You might think someone who wasn't entirely corporeal himself would have an easier time with the concept. Nope.

"Oh, they're very physical," Lucifer said. "What, you think sentient creatures just abandon their sense of their physical form when they die? It's your body, you've been in it for Father knows how long, you get attached to it."
