Caritas, Monday

Well, Jane had been busy back home for a little bit there, but was raring to go at the bar again.

Much to Tino's obvious dismay.

"Why would I have quit?" Jane asked, frowning at where Tino was sullenly wiping down part of the bar top away from her. "And it was a vacation week in there too, you know."

Not that she'd gone, but. Still.

Ignoring him, she straightened the sign directing people to where the Purim party was in the back room instead.

"Hello Steven," Stark said, returning the wave in his pirate-y way.

"Hello, Stark," Steven said. He took one of his Purim bags and offered it out to him. "Here. For you. Almost dropped it off at the Clinic but realized I'd probably see you here as well."

"Oh. Thank you! I actually have something for as well," Stark said, accepting the bag with a smile. "Just something small. And I brought some cookies, for everyone. But hold on."

He had stashed a small bag of his own under a table when he arrived which contained some fancy tea from Indonesia which he pulled out and brought over to Steven and handed over.

Steven, who of course had no psychic abilities to be aware of Stark and Summer's conversation yesterday, was entirely and happily surp by the present. "Is this for me?"

Stark nodded.

"Summer mentioned that there was gift giving involved... and I thought you might like this. It's from the island where we were, on the trip."

"Oh that's kind," Steven said. He peeked into the bag to see. "Oh tea! Lovely! I'll make good use of that."

Shocking, coming from the British guy. Perhaps Stark should've been sitting down.

"How are you?" Steven asked. "I like your costume by the way."

"I'm doing well," Stark said. Aside from confused and complicated feelings, of course.

"Summer picked out the costume. And I helped her choose hers."

Well. He'd studied some photos she sent very carefully.

"Her costume is lovely," Steven said. "I've never seen a frock like it. She's very talented with that sort of thing. Clothing."

Steven did know, after all, that Summer frequently worked as Stark's stylist.

"She's very clever about clothes," Stark agreed. "And costumes. And...a lot of things."

"Parties," Steven said, just to add to the list. He looked around again. "Amazing what she was able to manage so quickly! Also kind for Caritas to let the party be here."

Steven had no idea who owned Caritas but whoever it was was still nice to be all right with a last minute party, in his opinion.

"She is wonderful at parties," Stark agreed, looking around the room. "And she does so much of it herself. I'm always impressed."

"I offered to help," Steven said. "I mean only fair since she threw the party because of me. But she said she had it handled. Which - here we are. Can't say she lied about being able to do it, can we?"

"I think she's very proud of being able to do these things. I did help her put up posters yesterday. And with the gift bags last night, after she picked out my outfit."

And he'd helped with her outfit through the use of some interesting photos!

"You did?" Steven asked. "Cheers. That's kind of you. Wonderful how people come together for these things, isn't it? Helping out. Showing up to have a good time. It's a nice part of living here."

Steven realized something, then grinned and said, far too proudly, "It's a nice party of living here."

"I like being able to help," Stark said. "When I can."

The wordplay got a small smile out of him.

The appreciation of said wordplay was one of many reasons why Stark was a good friend.

"You're good at that," Steven said. "Being helpful. Is there something here of yours so I can make sure I don't miss it?"

Steven wanted to show his own appreciation, after all. Especially if there were baked goods.

"I brought chocolate chip cookies," Stark said. "I would have made cupcakes but I didn't really have time last night. But the cookies are safe for you to eat."

"Right, have to try those then, back in a tick," Steven said. He started to go in that direction then hesitated, "Do you need anything?"

"I don't need anything...but cookies are always welcome," Stark said. "Any of them."

Steven came back with two small plates, one for each of them. They had Stark's chocolate chip cookies as well as Llewellyn's Saskatoon hamantaschen. "Here. Llewellyn made these. I'd not had Saskatoon anything before last week. It's nice. Sort of almondy."

"Is that a place or a thing?" Stark asked. "Saskatoon?"

"It's both?" Steven said. "It's a place and also a fruit. Though I don't know offhand which one was named for the other."

Llewellyn probably did.

"Tasty though," Steven said. "Had it as jam the other day, then Llewellyn made them into these."

Stark nodded and took a bite of one of the cookies. "I like it," he said. "I'll have to tell him."

"He's been doing all sorts of baking," Steven said, with no small amount of pride. "I get to test things out. Well, me and Raphael when it's appropriate."

"The cat?" Stark said after a moment of trying to remember if he knew that name. "I didn't know cats liked baked goods."

Maybe he ought to be trying to bribe Pancakes with freshly baked treats.

"And that's good. Baking. I like it. It's...relaxing sometimes. Or at least helps me not think about other things."
