So, this was Summer's first pollen week while single in three years, so she was thinking thigns could get a little interesting at her Caritas shift that evening.

Good interesting? Bad interesting?

(Even worse. not interesting at all??)

She had no idea, so she was trying not to think about it, or build up any expectations, to keep herself simultaneously prepared for everything and for nothing at all. Which left a pretty big, obnoxious knot in her stomach.

Although that could also just be from working in all-too-close proximity of Tino and the realization that, especially without the 'I have a boyfriend!' shield, that could theoretically happen tonight.

Yeah, okay, she was definitely going to just focus on making drinks and slinging jello and insisting this was an absolutely normal Wednesday night, until something started to look decidedly more advantageous for her.

Well, maybe with a little help from the specials tonight. What? She was nothing if not an opportunist.

"Oh," said Summer, plainly and simply and maybe even proudly, "it's completely subjective and based entirely on my mood at any given moment, but I will say that my mood is very impressed right now."

Which lead to a very important next question: "More?"

You would think that a guy who had been around as much as Dean has that he wouldn't feel the need to prove himself to a twenty-something year old bartender.

"Line 'em up!" he declared with a dramatic gesture.

Nope. He apparently had something to prove.

And Summer was more than happy to oblige in having that....whatever it was...being proven to her, lining the next round up neatly and taking a brief moment to appreciate her own work set out there on the counter before her eyes lifted to appreciate Dean for what was definitely not going to be the last time.

"Yeah," she decided, although something in her tone almost made it sound like she was answering something to herself more than anything, "you are definitely going to make out like fucking gangbusters out here."

Dean had no context whatsoever and it didn't help that the jello shots were kicking in.

"Uh. Okay. I'll take your word for it."

"Generally a good idea," Summer informed him with a nod. "I tend to be right about most things."

Although all that time appreciating both her shots and Dean and now the way Dean could really just put those shots down was starting to make her feel like she should focus on pinning down if she was right about one thing that felt like it had been shockingly skirted around so far, especially compared to how these things could go sometimes.

"So," she said, "you're new, but you mentioned the whole pollen business," she waved her hand dismissively through the air in general, "so I take it someone's caught you up to speed on that whole thing. Thoughts? Opinions? Concerns?"

This question would have been easier to answer 5 shots ago.

Dean inhaled through his nose and let it out slowly as he thought about it. "Well... first? Consent is everything. If someone isn't interested you gotta respect that. Also you don't mess with another person if they are in a relationship or whatever. And for me, if I wasn't comfortable with this, I'd take a break and find a place where bunny pollen is going to effect me."

He then dissolved into giggles. "Bunny pollen"

He stopped and picked up another shot. "Or barricade myself and watch... entertaining things."

You know what? That was on her for trying to keep it vague.

But that all was very good things to know, and Summer nodded along with this little dissertation in agreement and did better next time.

"So is that a yes or a no on banging bartenders you just met, but, in her defense," her finger pointed at the remaining shots, "does make excellent jello shots?"

Vagueness is lost on a semi-inebriated Dean.

“Oh.”

And there was a bit of hesitation there.

“I mean… sure. But I thought you and Stark were-“

He tried to come up with a good word. “Complicated?”

Probably not the best choice.

Summer's mouth did a thing just then, like her lips weren't sure if they wanted to purse or flatten, but her jaw was sure set on tightening and it took a very, very good deal of effort not to look over at the masked individual in question.

"It's really not that complicated," she insisted.

Dean's eyes widened a little bit and WOW did it suddenly feel awkward in here.

"I mean... Normally this wouldn't be an issue with me," Dean said, blinking hard "Hot bartender? That one being you? I-"

Right now there's totally a Sam in the back of his head lecturing him.

"In a heartbeat. But I've been here less than a week and Stark may not be my BFF or anything but it's clear he has feelings for you. So while it's not complicated for you, regretfully....

He let out a strong exhaled sigh.

"Oh so regretfully, I probably should take a rain check on that offer."

And Summer, too, was going to let out a long exhaled sigh of her own and she was going to take a moment to rub her forehead, then she shook her head

"No, it's..." And there was another sigh. "Fine. It's fine, it would...definitely be awkward for me now, too, so, uh...yeah, I...I'm just gonna...have to...not...look at your face," she gestured vaguely toward it, "for a little bit now, because then that's going to be complicated for me," hand now to her chest, "personally, so....."

And maybe replay this whole interaction back in her head with this context to help make herself feel slightly better about the way it went pretty much up to this point...

You know what? She was just going to help herself to one of those shots for herself now, too.

And then shake her head again.

"Fuck, that's disappointing."
