ENVY'S CONCERT, The Park, Friday Evening

Come Friday evening, there was practically a festival area in the park. On one side stood a line of various food trucks, serving moddable food and beverages, courtesy of Envy and Peter's wedding budget. On the other, there was a merch booth for anything and everything Envy you might want - at least in terms of apparel or physical records. There was also a little cordoned off media area to one side of the stage, holding members of the music press from around the multiverse, ready to live-tweet the show back into their worlds.

And then, of course, there was the stage, looming over everything, just a little bigger than what a show in a small town park strictly speaking needed. The back of the stage was already lit up with giant block letters of made up of a gazillion light bulbs, spelling out ENVY. Just in case anyone forgot who tonight was really all about. (Or needed a reminder about who to Google.)

The paint rain across the island was still going, so hope everyone was either cool with continuing to be dyed various colors, or had brought an umbrella or perhaps a big newspaper to shield themselves with. Either way, the hope was everyone enjoyed themselves.

Show up, take in the vibe, find your friends, find out if they know who the heck Envy Adams is.

There's plenty of NPC mainlanders about, too, including a bunch of girls in their late teens and early twenties already crowding the front of the stage with way too much time left to go.

Charlie was here and ready for an amazing concert. She even had her own Envy t-shirt because of course Charlie knew her and loved her music. She was totally prepared to sing along and have a blast!

Peter was wearing a baseball cap and schlubby clothes, just in case. Though his attempts to stay anonymous - if anyone had been here who'd recognize him at all - were probably ruined a little by the security guards constantly lurking in his direction.

Oh well.

He hung around near the edges of the field, scanning the crowd for anyone interesting.

Summer was looking a little bit pink that day, beyond her usual adorable color-coded devotion to personal fashion, and the koala clinging to her had managed to be multi-colored, because that was a hilarious reference.

Anyway, if there was a concert going on on the island, she wasn't going to want to miss it and also she was pretty sure Atton had mentioned Envy before, so now she definitely had to check it out, and getting a wide variety of selfies to cultivate the best ones for posting later.

Margo wasn't a merch kinda girl, but she'd heard of Envy. And fuck, she needed a break.

A concert? Why not. She made it over here in a cute shirt and bright pink skirt, holding a pretty transparent umbrella. She was sunnily ignoring all the paint splattering down on it.

Octavia had seen the posters, and while the wedding aspect was also intriguing (purely because it wasn't exactly a part of ritualized culture in this time she'd come into much contact with), the concert? Live music?

She had to be here.

Prompto was pretty excited about this; he hadn't realized it until a bit after seeing the flyers that Envy's music had actually popped up on his Pandora quite a few times, and it really was totally his vibe. So he was there, and of course he was 1000% That Parent with their baby in adorable noise-canceling headphones at a concert.

Remy wasn't familiar with Envy -- she quite possibly had made a name for herself in his universe, but he wasn't much for modern pop or rock that wasn't Lila's.

But hey, he was bored and there was colorful rain happening. So sure, he'd wander by the concert. It seemed like fun!

Dean took a seat at the back of the concert area and was chilling out. After a day of scanning multiple news outlets for weird crap back home, getting out and going to a concert felt like a pretty good diversion.

Of course he was blue. Not sad or anything, just blue from the rain that had hit him.

Kamala had found a nice spot for the concert and was just hanging out enjoying the way that she shifted from red to blue to gold to purple and so on.

If there was anyone who was into this weird color changing rain, it was definitely Kamala.

In a situation such as this, a lone skid by himself had quite the choice to make: lurk on the edges and whatever shadows may avail themselves in the settling evening, or throw oneself into the throng of the dancing crowd? Wasn't exactly his scene, but, well. What else was there to do on a Friday night around here? Stewart had time to decide, stooped and squinting as he shifted around in his assessment.

Eleanor was just sort of taking everything in, really absorbing in the experience. This sort of thing was still pretty new for her, without adding into it that it was also a date, too.

And her hair didn't stand a chance against this rain, a veritable cacophony of colors splashed against that pale, pale blonde.

Vi had been planning a quiet night in, but Steph had kept pawing at the poster she'd brought home pre-kittifying and mewing piteously, so here Vi was with a beanie wearing cat perched on her head for a better view.

Food Trucks [Concert 07/26]

How'd the food trucks even get there? Envy's team worked hard, that's how, so now there they were, serving many kinds of moddable delicious street food and beverages free of charge. Vegan options were included, although they weren't going to grant anyone superpowers - Envy had made sure the catering wasn't sourced from her world.

Ender wasn't planning to stay long. He was just stopping by to see his brother's fiancee before the - sigh - wedding tomorrow. He planned to head home shortly into her set.

But for now, he'd brought Val with him, and together they walked to the food trucks to pick out something pancake-shaped for her to eat. "So when do I get to meet my uncle?" she asked.

"Soon," Ender said wryly, "But hopefully not for long."

This certainly seemed like the thing to do around town tonight, and since Amaya had found a food truck offering a variety of different meats on sticks....well, it was pretty easy to guess where she was mostly planning on posting up for the majority of the concert.

Ohhh now we were talking! Harley had made an immediate beeline to the food trucks, and was now balancing two little cartons (tacos? and somekinda fries in the other) against her body with one hand while feeding herself some sort of meat-on-a-stick thing with the other.

Also, yeah, most of her visible skin was all spattered in various of colors of paint, and she liked it that way.

Merch Booth [Concert 07/26]

There were t-shirts and sweaters with pop art-y pictures of Envy, as well as ones with just the big logo of her name, which you could also get on a baseball cap or a tote bag. And naturally there were also vinyl and CD copies of all of her solo albums, some with different universe-specific variants on offer, with cool bonus tracks or a shinier cover or something.

Also, yeah, Ulysses was manning the booth. What, he could use the extra money from a brief gig like this.

If you had any reason to be backstage, where Envy was spending her final pre-show moments having her makeup artist paint around some accidental paint splotches from earlier to make it a whole Bowie-inspired look instead, while someone else was basically sewing her into her outfit, also with a last-moment change and alterations because of the rain.

Again, Envy's team worked hard.

Peter stole in not long before the show. He didn't say anything; he just parked himself in the corner, leaned against the wall, and watched her prepare with a little smile on his face.

THE SHOW [Concert 07/26]

And then it was time.

The stage lights dimmed, theater smoke billowed out, and while the members of Envy's touring band came out to take their places in the back of the stage, a short instrumental played - seemingly not from the speakers but rather just all across the little concert area. As it ended, Envy emerged from the smoke in her multicolour designer outfit and the elegant face paint to match, dripping confidence. The band seemed to fade further into the background.

The girls in the front row screamed. Envy was used to it.

"Hey, Fandom," she said. "This one's for you."

And they were off, right into the first song. It was a bombastic number from a few albums back - and yes, the opener here of all places not by any sort of chance. Envy had after all done a lot of her growing up right here on the island and, well, nowhere else were lyrics like 'we played double dutch with a hand grenade' going to hit her quite as much as on the island that had stuffed her in a dungeon for several days as a teenager, among other things.

And she owned the stage with it.

The next several songs had a similar sort of slinky bite to them. Among them, there was the last hit from the old The Clash at Demonhead days, right before the band bit the dust in more than one sense - pretty much the only TCaD song she was inclined to perform anymore, and played here more as a nostalgic indulgence than out of real appreciation for it. Then a song from recent years, the second closest (apart from the opener) the whole setlist was going to get to the most cynical side of her discography. She wasn't going to be touching the vaguely political songs at all (as much as her general audience didn't seem to twig on to them being that way in the first place), because this wasn't the time. And so, a song she'd specifically written for an indie movie that had since become a hit, released also in worlds that didn't actually have the movie? It fit right in.

That was the turning point, anyway, into the rest of the set being strictly more upbeat, or at least optimistic, or at least dancey. Old favourites, and songs to put a little bounce into Envy's high heels, and the reason a Dior watch Envy had gifted Peter a long time ago had the words 'nothing but time' engraved on the back of it...

Song after song, Envy strutting around the stage, commanding attention, putting emotion into words even when her general demeanor was cool and sleek and unfazed. The whole thing was over an hour, close to an hour and a half, so at least no one could say Envy didn't put her back into performing - but they were nearing the end, now.

Combat Baby was a given. It was one of the few times Envy actually smiled, too, right when that first 'none of them want to fight me' hit, like there was a memory here that she was willing to let people in on, on this, the eve of her wedding.

And then that song ended, too, that finishing, sultry 'How I miss your ranting, do you miss my all time lows?' drawing out another smile.

"Usually I end on that one," she told the audience. "Fan favourite, you know? And at this point, a classic." Yes, of course Envy would feel bold enough to assign that status herself. She was standing in front of a giant light-up sign of her own name, come on now. "But tonight I'm gonna leave you with one more." She held up her hand, one finger raised. "It's a new one. Something I've been working on for specifically this weekend. Even my husband-to-be hasn't heard this one yet, because I've been keeping it from him. This is... All Comes Crashing."

It wasn't subtle at all, with lyrics like 'If all we knew came crashing down tonight, I'd be with you, and there's no one I would rather be dying beside', but it didn't need to be. Envy was going to be saying the same thing in different words tomorrow all over again.

Tonight, she just sang her heart out with it, perfectly contained in a spotlight as her band thundered on behind her. Really selling it, because all of it was real.

And when the song came to an end, Envy composed herself for just a few seconds, and then said: "For one last night, I'm Envy Adams, although I'll always be Envy." On every marquee, album cover, plastered along the back of the stage. "Thanks for coming, and don't forget to come to our party tomorrow, or you'll regret it. Good night."

And the stage lights went out again.

Oh hey, Harley was dancing in the crowd through most of the show, at least when she wasn't nipping over to the trucks for another snack.

Also there was that one moment where she yelled, "Woo, I'm not gonna boo you, lady!"

It made sense to her, that was enough.

And lo and behold, as the narrative had implied, eventually there was an Envy. She was still sporting the face paint, but was now clad in a slightly more understated designer ensemble. And also holding an umbrella to guard from further splotches.

She sent one of her assistants to get her something from whatever the food trucks still had left. There'd be more food at the hotel, of course, but she needed a quick replenishment to her energy reserves.
