Caritas, Wednesday Evening

Jarod whistled as he opened the bar, to the point where the zombies were elbowing each other in a knowing fashion and Tino kept hoping for some good gossip, which he wouldn't get. When it was quiet, Jarod once again worked on his laptop, closing it when he sensed anyone coming close enough to read the screen.

A sign was posted on the door:

WELCOME TO FANDOM, NEW STUDENTS AND TEACHERS!

"LA was wonderful," Isable grinned. "We had a lot of fun. But it is nice to be home."

"What did you do?" Jarod had only spent a little time in California, when he was visiting Veronica.

"Cedric and I went to the Getty Museum, then a bunch of us went to Disney World, and then we spent some time on Muscle Beach," she said, smiling at the memories. "We finished off with a New Year's party. I'm really glad we went."

"Good, I'm glad you had fun," Jarod said, even though he'd missed her. "Nothing invaded while you were gone."

"No, that was yesterday," Isabel laughed. "I'm sorry I left so suddenly, after we'd talked about having lunch. But Jack had to leave for the break at the last minute and I didn't want Cedric to spend the whole time sitting in his room. He needed to get out of here."

"No, I understand," Jarod said, taking a sip of water, "and Cedric's lucky you're such a considerate friend."

"Well I still owe you lunch, just for cutting out last minute like that. So," she said, taking a sip of her drink and resting her chin on her hand. "Did you ever get your Christmas presents?"

"I did," Jarod said, smirking slightly.

"And? Andthing good?" Isabel asked, trying not to appear too curious.

"A number of things, plus a gift or two for M." He didn't mention the letter. "Parker got her a diamond collar, which seems a bit excessive, but it's her money."

She grinned at the mention of the collar. "It's Parker, what do you expect? Besides, M deserves the best. No coal though?"

"No, I got that too," he grinned.

"She didn't!" Isabel exclaimed, horrified.

"She did," Jarod said, almost proudly. "Not real coal, but it's the thought that counts."

"Oh," she said, getting it. "A joke gift? Hopefully accompanied by something nice?"

"There were other gifts, yes, but the coal...that was pure Parker." He might have sounded absurdly pleased.

Isabel smiled, "Well just as long as you liked them." She took another sip of her drink and stirred the straw absently. "Would you believe I'll be here a year tomorrow?"

"Happy anniversary?" Jarod wasn't sure that was right, but it didn't sound wrong, so he went with it. "That's right, you got here right after I did."

"Thanks," she replied. "It actually is. On a whole it's been a pretty good year." Alex's death, Lonnie's visit, if she could, Isabel would change that. But there were so many better things to think about. "When did you come to town?"

"Right after Thanksgiving, I think," Jarod frowned, "or maybe before? Sometime in November."

"Well Happy Anniversary to you as well, just a little late," Isabel said with a smile. "Was it a good year for you?"

Jarod thought back over the past year, every new experience, and especially his time with Parker. "I wouldn't trade it."

Isabel held her glass up for a toast. "Here's to good first years, and even better second years."

Jarod poured himself a soda and tapped his glass to hers. "Here's to good friends, no matter what happens."
