"Oh, that's totally unfair!" Luke said. "I had to leave my X-Wing behind, too. All we have here is the stupid shuttle Tydirium and it's just not the same." He grinned. "Are you taking the flight workshop?"

He brightened at someone understanding the whole 'missing your ship' feeling.

"I couldn't miss that one," Gavin said with a nod. "You taking it?"

Luke grinned and bounced. "I wouldn't miss it. My father's teaching it."

And the weird just kept getting weirder...

"Your father's here?" Gavin rubbed his eyes this time. Just to make sure. "That has to be weird for you. I talked to someone earlier whose mom works in the town."

"Jo?" Luke smiled. "I met her mother--she works at the bar. She's a nice lady even if she didn't know quite what to think about the shuttle on the roof of her apartment building. Who else have you met?"

"Jo," he confirmed. "And I've met...Donatello, an Ed Elric, Annette, Peter Petrelli and someone else who knew me. Jaina Solo."

Luke grinned. "Yeah, that last one's apparently my niece. Something in my brain went 'sproing' at that."

"...niece?" He made what he hoped was a sympathetic face at Luke. But he couldn't keep the utter 'wow' look from slipping in. "Okay, you win."

"I didn't know it was a contest," Luke said lightly. "How long were you with the Rogues? How's Wedge?"

"So far, under a year," he said. And he sincerely hoped that wouldn't be the last of his time with the Rogues. "Commander Antilles is well. It's been rough lately. On him, especially."

"You must have been really young when you joined," Luke said, trying not to sound too jealous. "Anything to get off of Tatooine, huh?"

"I was and yes," he said, emphasizing that last word. "Womp rats get boring after awhile."

"Like five minutes," Luke said, rolling his eyes. "But you can up the excitement by daring someone to go play near a Sarlaac pit. Um. Not that Biggs and I ever did that."

"Two minutes even," Gavin said and then laughed. "I won't tell anyone. I got so bored once, I played 'hide the sand.' You can imagine how that worked out, I'm sure."

Luke cracked up. "I tried to get out of chores by saying I lost a very important piece of sand in the...other parts of sand. Uncle Owen wasn't buying it at all."

Gavin laughed, feeling much more relaxed now. "Did you ever name the sand? I think I tried that once to get out of something. Told my mother I was playing with my new friends and pointed at the sand. She sent me to bed."

"Probably after making you drink water in case you were suffering from dehydration or something," Luke said, knowing that 'what the hell do you think you're doing' look all too well. "Oh! The milk here isn't blue. Weird, huh?"

"What color is it?" Gavin asked, frowning. "Not brown, right?"

Gross things were always brown. Or green.

"White!" Luke said. "Oh! There's enough water to swim in and there aren't time limits on showers here."

This had been a huge, huge deal for him when he arrived.

"Swimming!" He hadn't been swimming in...a long time. "The water's not dirty or something?"

"Not at all!" Luke said. "It's freezing, but, you know, water. Everything here's colder than we're used to anyway."

"So, you've been swimming here?" Gavin asked. "And you're still alive. That's good!"

What? He wasn't used to big bodies of clean water.

Luke grinned. Finally someone who understood where he was coming from!

"It was! Don't jump off the cliffs without a really good reason, though," he said. "It's not worth it." He grinned. "And there's sand on the beach in case you're looking to make new friends."

"I have enough sand friends," he said, dissolving into laughter. "The ones at home would get jealous."

"We can't have that," Luke said, giggling. "Think of all the letters you'd have to write to break their little hearts!"
