Fandom High Welcome Picnic, The Park, All Day: Part II

School in ruins = picnic in the park.
Food, check. Nametags, check. Glitter, check. Sibling list, check.
New people, yay!

[WAIT FOR THE OCD PLEASE. Mini-OCD is done, woo! This is part two of the picnic, for general mingling. Part one is happening simultaneously here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. *g* Both posts are open to everyone.]

"There are a lot of people here from different worlds," Molly said reassuringly. "You handling everything okay? Have you run into anything that you need explained? I mean, like, technology stuff?"

Re: General Mingling

[identity profile] vkandis-son.livejournal.com 2007-05-12 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
"I'm not entirely certain what technology stuff means," he admitted. "Someone tried to explain what a camera was to me yesterday, and that people fly among the stars. Is it anything to do with that?"

Re: General Mingling

[identity profile] bruiser-in-pink.livejournal.com 2007-05-12 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Molly nodded. "Yeah, a lot of that stuff you won't need to worry about. Like, unless you're taking the flying workshop, you probably can wait for an explanation about going into space. But, light switches? That you should learn about right away. And telephones."

"No, I don't think I'll be wanting to go anywhere near space. Ever," he said quickly. "Flying with the gryphons was as close as I'd like to come. But can you tell me about light switches? And telephones?" He couldn't help looking at her hopefully. "Please?"

How could she say no to that look. "I can," she said and thought about how to start. "We'll start with light switches. Do you know anything about electricity?"

Re: General Mingling

[identity profile] vkandis-son.livejournal.com 2007-05-13 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
He shook his head. "I've know nothing about it, I'm sorry."

"Okay, electricity is like lightning or the spark you get from static-y clothing. Only, it's controlled and put into wires that run through the buildings. We use it to run a lot of stuff. Including out lights. A light switch is a little toggle switch on the wall, " she held her fingers up to show him the size of a wall switch, "that you can use to turn the lights on and off."

"I wondered why there were no candles or mage lights," he murmured, memorising every word. "I recall seeing those, but I was uncertain as to their purpose. I thought they might have been decorative."

Re: General Mingling

[identity profile] bruiser-in-pink.livejournal.com 2007-05-13 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
Molly grinned. "Sometimes, they are decorated, but they do have a function. We also have lamps that have a different kind of switch. They either turn or push. You might need someone to show you on whatever lamp you have since they're all different."

Re: General Mingling

[identity profile] vkandis-son.livejournal.com 2007-05-13 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
He was still nodding. "That will be of great assistance," he said. "I would have felt foolish attempting to light candles if there were a lamp just next to me. And a telephone?"

Re: General Mingling

[identity profile] bruiser-in-pink.livejournal.com 2007-05-13 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
Molly pulled her cell phone out of her pocket. "A telephone is a communication device thingy that lets you talk to people who are far away. Or in the next room, if you're lazy. This one is a cell phone. I'm not sure why it's called a cell phone or how exactly it works. All I know is that it is portable and it lets me call people."

She went on to describe how a regular phone was different and how to make a call. She explained phone numbers and how everybody had their own. "Here." She held out the phone to him. "I'll tell you my phone number and you can leave me a voice mail."

It looked like a mage construct, and as he'd understood only about half of what she'd said, he was happy to think of it as one. "I just push the numbers?" he asked, turning the phone over in his hands. "That's all?"

"Yep! And then hit the send button, which is that one there." She pointed helpfully.

The buttons felt very strange, the material they were made of unfamiliar, but he pressed it obediently.

And jumped when it started to emit a ringing noise. "Did I do something wrong? Is that what it's supposed to do?"

Re: General Mingling

[identity profile] bruiser-in-pink.livejournal.com 2007-05-13 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Molly tried really hard not to giggle, but wasn't very successful. "That's how you know the call went through," she explained. "It should ring four times before it goes to voice mail."

Re: General Mingling

[identity profile] vkandis-son.livejournal.com 2007-05-13 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
He smiled a bit sheepishly, and listened very carefully, counting out the rings until he reach four, and his eyes got very wide. "That is your voice," he said wonderingly. "Does this mean I can speak to you when you are somewhere else entirely?"

Re: General Mingling

[identity profile] bruiser-in-pink.livejournal.com 2007-05-13 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Molly smiled widely at Karal's wonder and nodded. "I could even be somewhere off of the island and you could call me. As long as I had my phone with me."

Re: General Mingling

[identity profile] vkandis-son.livejournal.com 2007-05-13 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
"There are so many ways that my people could use this. We can send messages a long way with magic, and those who can speak mind to mind can often do so over great distances, but this." He folded his hands over the phone for a moment before offering it back to her. "Anyone could use this, without requiring magic or a gift."

Re: General Mingling

[identity profile] bruiser-in-pink.livejournal.com 2007-05-13 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Molly nodded as she took the phone back. "There's a lot of other stuff involved, like satellites and cell towers, but yeah, as long as you have a phone that works here, you can call anybody else with a phone."

Re: General Mingling

[identity profile] vkandis-son.livejournal.com 2007-05-13 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
"I think that I won't ask you to explain what satellites and cell towers are. At least, not today," he said with a small smile. "But I am grateful for your help. It was very kind of you."

Re: General Mingling

[identity profile] bruiser-in-pink.livejournal.com 2007-05-13 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
"You're welcome," Molly said, returning the smile. "I'm happy I could help. I'll explain anything that you want me to whenever you need it."

Re: General Mingling

[identity profile] vkandis-son.livejournal.com 2007-05-13 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
"It's entirely possible you may come to regret that offer at some point in the future," he said lightly. "But I'll try and limit myself only to those things I can't discover on my own."

Re: General Mingling

[identity profile] bruiser-in-pink.livejournal.com 2007-05-13 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Molly giggled. "I'll be sure to let you know if you're asking too many questions."

Re: General Mingling

[identity profile] vkandis-son.livejournal.com 2007-05-13 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
"Do, please," he said seriously. "I tend to get rather focused when I there's things I don't understand. But I was told there is a library? Is that correct?"

Re: General Mingling

[identity profile] bruiser-in-pink.livejournal.com 2007-05-13 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Molly nodded. "I heard that it made it through the alien attack just fine. I haven't been to see for myself though."
