Caritas [Saturday evening]

Robin was not wearing her Robin Sparkles regalia longer than she needed to. Which was for the obligatory performance.

So, for right now, the wig and graffiti denim jacket were tucked away, and Robin herself, brunette and irritable-looking as ever, was behind the bar and eyeing a bottle of Johnnie Walker.

Dani didn't need liquid courage, but she did need a distraction from watching her Internet auctions. "A glass of white wine, please," she requested as she took a seat. "Anything but chardonnay. I've never developed a taste for it."

Robin retrieved a bottle of pinot grigio with an appreciative nod. "Chardonnay's barely a drink, anyway, unless you're an unhappy middle-aged housewife."

"With any luck, that won't be me," said Dani with a smug look on her face.

"Or, god willing, me," Robin said with a shudder. "Ew."

"I don't need to marry anyone for financial security anyway. I have my own money," said Dani. "I have my inheritance, too, as long as my dad doesn't blow it on his parade of flight attendant girlfriends."

"Mmm, lucky you. I just have royalties," Robin said in commiseration. "And, you know, two jobs."

"Two jobs? I guess the royalties don't pay as much as you'd like," said Dani. "Or maybe it's for the extra spending money?"

"I actually just really, really like bartending," Robin confided. "And it's one night a week, so meh."

"Does it pay well? It would be nice to have some extra cash to help furnish my new house," said Dani. Not that she knew anything about tending bar...

"It pays okay," she admitted, "but you get free booze."

"Free booze must be nice, though I'd much rather prefer cash at this point," said Dani. "I guess I should keep my options open."

One day, Minsc might learn that, when you were in a tavern and you spotted someone else there that a certain part of your brain suggested avoiding, you did well not to bring attention to the fact that you noticed them and then pretended not to have noticed them.

This was not that day. It probably didn't help that, after a few glances and fidgeting and eyes rolling up with not exactly nonchalant whistles, he seemed to have started a whispered debate with his hamster as to whether or not it was a good idea to send the lady a drink or if he should just pretend he didn't see her in the crowd.

Dani definitely noticed Minsc and debated hiding behind the bar for a few seconds. Then she remembered that her conversation with Vince had actually gone rather well and decided to take the high road.

"Hello!" she said. "I haven't see you around lately, but then again, nothing's attacked The Gig for a while. I suppose that's a good thing."

Well, that kind of settled it a little. And there was no stabbing. Stabbings were at least seventy percent more likely to occur in a tavern, in Minsc's experience, so he kept on the ready, giving a nod that was just a bit too quick.

"Hullo, Lady Dani! How are you this evening? I am very well, thank you." The fact that that whole blurt was entirely devoid of Minsc-esque emphasis was a good indication that he put a lot of thought into it, even if the pacing didn't seem to be a consideration at all. It came out in just three breaths. "And I have not had a need to repair any armour, either, so that is probably also good."

Dani had sharp tongue, but she usually didn't resort to stabbings.

"I'm good," she said. "It's very exciting to have this convention in town, isn't it? And I hope those last repairs on your armour held up just fine."

"Is that where all the people came from?" Minsc remarked, blinking at the crowd again.

Yeah, he stayed on top of things sometimes.

"I didn't know! What kind of convention is it? It doesn't look much like the crowd in the convention I came to that first introduced me to Fandom, that is for sure!"

"It seems to be some sort of musician's convention. I was talking to one of the performers earlier," said Dani. "It reminds me a little bit of hanging out at my brother's nightclub and seeing all the concerts they held."

"...I knew a bard once," Minsc said, after a moment of going over whether he had anything to contribute to a conversation like this, and he still sounded a touch uncertain. "Wussy fellow. Absolutely no good in battle."

"I don't suppose singing or playing guitar are particularly useful in battle, unless you break the guitar over someone's head," said Dani, snickering.

Minsc couldn't help grinning at a visual like that. "Someone actually tried that on me once," he said proudly with a chuckle. "It did not do them much good at all! Mostly, the bard is supposed to help boost morale in a battle, but I have never had much of a problem with morale!"

In fact, he had a problem with having too much morale.

"I've been pretty busy," said Dani, smiling. "I just bought a house, and I'm working on getting a new horse for The Gig."

"So I guess you're planning on sticking around for awhile."

"That's the plan, just living on my own and learning how to be independent," said Dani.

"It's fun. Because college totally counts, so I know."
