Strawberry Social - The Park, all day

Vida had gotten an early start in the park to set things up for the Strawberry Social. It had been chilly and damp when she arrived, but a stern glare at the clouds had sent them fleeing, and the sun was shining over the park now, making for a bright and sunny day. There was danceable music playing and plenty of places to stretch out and enjoy the sun.

Several picnic tables were laid end to end, covered with red table cloths and adorned with edible arrangements. There were plates to load up with food, which was available in plenty, including just about every strawberry dish imaginable. Vida had also thoughtfully provided red flowers to tuck in the hair and red scarves for those who might be feeling red-deficient.

Bright yellow landing strip leading to his crotch? Not adorable, blast it. His uniform made him look like everything that was wrong with the fast food industry these days. But in tights.

//Well, it seemed like th'thing to do,// he replied with a dismissive shrug. //I mean, it wasn't like it was difficult to pack.//

He was wearing most of it, already. Under his usual clothing.

"You are so very good to me," Raven beamed. "I cannot wait to see." She clapped her hands together gleefully.

"I might have purchased something to wear for you," she said. "Unless you have decided on something you wish to see me in." She'd totally keep her promise.

//Well, now that you've mentioned that you've picked something up, I don't think I could dare make you put on otherwise,// Jono decided. He was actually managing to get through this conversation without some sort of lingering sense of dread over striking a pose with an X on his belt that would put most wrestling costumes to shame.

Her clapping helped.

"I did promise to wear whatever you wished," Raven said. "So if you do decide on something later, I will still honor that."

She thought he might like it, but on the other hand, she'd probably have to gather up her nerve to put it on. While blushing the entire time.

Hey, now. Her blushing was endearing.

//Well, then I'll just have to get creative, won't I?//

He was a musician. He could handle that.

"Perhaps you will," Raven said, trying her best to be coy.

Giggling ruined the effect, though. Just a little bit.

//It might take a bit of doing, though,// Jono mused, encouraged by those giggles. He lifted one hand, running it down over his chest as if to smooth out his wrappings, but paused halfway down to snag just a bit of one strip of leather. He tugged it down just enough to reveal a shock of bright yellow underneath. //Whatever I pick out for you certainly has quite th'competition.//

Tights. Oy.

"You have it on now?" Raven said, leaning in to take a closer look.

She poked a finger at the revealed yellow, very gently. "That is very bright," she had to admit. Stealthy it was not.

//That's only a part of it,// Jono replied. It was only a lack of lungs keeping him from heaving a sigh, at this point. //Most of th'rest of it is red. Except for the jacket and boots. At least those are mostly black. And my belt is blue.//

Like a crayon factory vomited on him.

"But all your classmates must dress the same, do they not?" Raven said. "So you are not alone in wearing these outfits."

She'd have to reserve her opinion until she saw the full outfit, but she was still convinced he would be dashing. Raven was naive in the ways of brightly colored spandex.

//Similar, at least,// Jono allowed, shrugging a little. //If nothing else, Adrienne does have half-decent bloody taste when it comes to tights.//

Only half decent. Tights were never the answer. Never.

Tights were unforgiving. Tights let you have no secrets. Tights were...well, evil, but at least they weren't scaly underoos like a certain teammate of a Raven in another reality?

"Adrienne?" Raven repeated. "Who is that? Is that a new teacher?"

There was a long list of things that Jono would one day wear that were not as bad as the scaly underoos. A kilt. A scarf that would trip anybody else up on a good day. Sonic fairy wings...

//Headmistress, actually. Emma had a bit of a bad turn in th'stock market, and needed some financial assistance.//

[Sleeep time for meeee. Sp?]

"I am sorry to hear that," Raven said, brow furrowing with worry. She hated to think what might have happened if no one had been available to step in to help. "I am glad someone was able to aid Emma."

[Of course! Sleep well!]

//Well, apparently that's what family is for. Or something like that.// Jonothon shrugged dismissively. Who funded the team didn't matter much to him, just so long as the school stayed open. Maybe he could slink back to Fandom, or to London, but Leech and Artie? Penance? Angelo? Jubilee?

Closing the school wasn't an option.

//Th'new students are a bit of a pain in the arse. But at least there's th'Danger Shop for us to train in. That counts for something.//

Family always made Raven feel a little envious, though she was grateful for the family she had chosen rather than been born to. Then again, she had little idea of Fandom Emma's family issues, so she had no clue that family involvement at the Academy might turn out to be a bad thing after all.

"New students?" she said. "More mutants like yourself?"

//Humans. A lot of humans. Rich ones,// Jono replied, managing to filter back most of the bitterness in that statement. //I've been playing "Mute Burn Victim" again since Adrienne opened th'doors to the Academy.//

The act was getting tiring. The being swarmed by giggling high schoolers who thought that his completely faked sign language was romantic was more than a bit disconcerting.

//But that's where th'funding is coming from. It isn't like any of us are paying to be there, after all.//

Raven frowned; she hated to think of Jono uncomfortable in his own home. She put her hand on his arm, projecting a gentle wave of comfort.

"I am sorry," she said. "Is there anything I can do?"

At least this weekend in Fandom he would be free to be himself.

//Remind me that this, too, shall pass?// A pause, and then an attempt at a smile. //Or just keep me company for th'weekend. I'm here for th'company, after all.//

She slipped her arms around his neck and leaned in to give him another kiss, sending with is love and reassurance. "This will pass," she promised. "And in the meantime, you are here and free to be yourself, and I will give you all the company you desire."

And even strawberry beer if he wanted it.
