Parents' Weekend Brunch, Sunday Morning to Afternoon, The Park

As was traditional, the start of the end of Parents' Weekend featured plenty of food, benches, chairs, and coffee in the park. After all, the Student Council couldn't let the parents be weirded out one last time without a feast.

The sky was a little overcast, but the temperatures were still above normal, which was a lucky break for the final day of the weekend.

Not only did Bod have people who cared for him, he had at least one person who was willing to make a total ass of herself over her highly protective feelings towards him.

Yeah, Kate was still feeling guilty about that, especially now that she had her thoughts more in order and less clouded by irrational hatred without a target. Which was why she was gingerly approaching Scarlett now.

"Uh, hi. Scarlett?"

Scarlett was surprised to see Kate of all people approaching her but she smiled because she didn't want things to be strained.

"Hello, Kate," she greeted, nodding. "Did you have a good night?"

"It was okay." More than okay, but she was a little distracted and nervous right now, not really answering the question with any thought, or asking Scarlett about her night.

She bit on her lip. "Look, I just... wanted to apologize if I like, came across as a huge bitch yesterday."

"You don't care for me," she said, nodding and looking away. "That's all right. I know I've given you enough reasons to so it's all right. I didn't come here to fix everything. I just wanted to see Bod."

"Yeah well that's exactly why I'm apologizing," Kate replied, wanting to wrap her arms around herself, but she was holding a plate so she couldn't. "None of it's actually your fault. You... didn't do anything wrong."

Silas had. Oh so many things.

"It's all right," Scarlett told her, shaking her head. "I was a shocking surprise, I know. I don't blame you or him for having such a strong reaction. Some things are my fault. Some things in the past are but I doubt Bod would see it that way."

"No, he probably wouldn't," Kate agreed, with something approaching wryness. "It's not his style." Her lips twisted a bit. "So, yeah. I'm still sorry. We've just had some pretty rough times thanks to a lot of stuff from the past, so... It was weird."

"I won't be here much longer, if that helps," Scarlett said, sounding apologetic, "and I doubt my parents will let me make another trip like this. I just wanted to tell him some things I should have told him earlier. He deserved to know."

Kate nodded. "I get that," she said, then shrugged a shoulder. "You seem nice, for what it's worth. Nothing like Silas."

Not that she was expecting her to understand what she meant by that.

"I barely know him," Scarlett admitted quietly. "I know, I mean, I remember what he did to me but I also remember why he did it. What I saw, it was scary for a little girl but I know why Bod did what he did. He was protecting himself."

"I know," Kate replied. "I also know Silas only does what he thinks is best for Bod. Sometimes he's wrong."

And sometimes he was a vengeful ass.

"You know, I'm pretty sure Bod felt guilty about what happened to you. I hope he realizes he doesn't have to."

"I think Bod feels guilty about a lot of things he doesn't have," Scarlett agreed with a nod. "He takes a lot on his shoulders because of things that happened in the past. I think he almost wants to...atone for things that don't need that."

"He does," Kate agreed, because she knew Bod, and, yeah. "Guess that's the big flaw he needs to have for being the kindest, most amazing person in the world."

Not that Kate was biased.

"You're a nice person," Scarlett decided, nodding. "Bod's lucky to have someone as protective as you are around. I know he knows that."

"Oh trust me, I'm not that great," Kate replied, even if a faint smile crossed her face. "But I'm basically a horrible bitch to anyone who messes with him."

"It's a good trait to have," Scarlett told her, nodding. "You're a good person. I hope he's good to you as well."

"He's probably better than I deserve," Kate said, shrugging. "But, he's probably better than anyone really deserves, so I guess that works out."

"He chose you for a reason," Scarlett pointed out, shrugging. "I'd take his choice as an admission of something. Take care of him."

"That's the idea." She nodded, and tried for a very brief smile. "It was... nice, I guess, meeting you."

It didn't seem like the best word, but it would do.

"You too," Scarlett said, smiling at her. "Good luck with everything."

"Yeah, you too," Kate said, and meant it. She gestured vaguely... away. "I'm just gonna -- Yeah. Bye, Scarlett."

Not the most graceful exit she'd ever made, but. Weird circumstances and all.
