Parents' Weekend Brunch, Sunday Morning to Afternoon, The Park

As was traditional, the start of the end of Parents' Weekend featured plenty of food, benches, chairs, and coffee in the park. After all, the Student Council couldn't let the parents be weirded out one last time without a feast.

The sky was a little overcast, but the temperatures were still above normal, which was a lucky break for the final day of the weekend.

He wasn't that short anymore! Though compared to 7 feet...

Bobby stared at the comment and had to look down to make sure everything was fine down there.

"I am not!" No, wait. "I am Bobby. Not the first thing. Who are you? Are you related to Jake or something?" He probably shouldn't have ask that cause it sounded like he was stereotyping, but "I mean cause you're tall like him!"

"Tall and Native American and I know you have a thing for a vampire," Sam summed up for Bobby, all helpful. "I'm part of his pack."

"I don't have a thing for Caroline!" he argued because obviously she was the vampire in question. "And even if I did, it wouldn't matter."

He glared a little before remembering that this guy was a guest, and he should be nice. "That's nice you came to visit Jake though. Are you liking being on the island?" Nice apparently meant small talk.

"No," Sam said bluntly, knowing this kid was one of Caroline's friends. It made him mad to think he didn't even seem to know what a risk that was, but he'd wasted enough breath on that particular topic this weekend. "I'll be glad to leave."

"Oh." Bobby wasn't totally sure what to say to that. Other than hoping the guy stopped referring to him as the 'boner kid.' This guy must be the boss Tyler had referred to, and if he was the reason Caroline was going to cry, Bobby was pretty certain he didn't like the tall wolf guy.

"Fandom's weird for everyone at first. All kinds of people get along here who'd hate each other at home because Fandom's different. In a good way though." Geek and popular kids, werewolves and vampires, Trekkies and Star Battles fans...

Sam snorted. "Look, kid. I don't need you lecturing me. Sometimes it's good to hate each other. Like you might be a lot smarter if you stop being buddies with a bloodsucker. She might be nice and friendly now, but one mistake and she might accidentally kill you and she'll never have meant to harm you, but it'll be too late anyway."

It was the first time anyone had said anything to Bobby about the possible perils of being friends with a vampire so he had to stop to think about that a little.

"Maybe. But a non-vampire friend could be make a mistake driving, and I could die that way too. I don't want to choose friends based on their risk potential."

Sam leaned his head down. "No? Let me tell you the difference. If your friends has a car accident, it's just that an accident. If your leech friend feeds on you, it's them giving in to a desire they have every fucking second they're close to you."

"Caroline wouldn't do that, and you shouldn't call her a leech," Bobby informed him. Even if he was stupid about how easily Sam could break him, he was loyal. "You don't even know her so you're just being prejudiced. Maybe you should try judging people on their merits."

"And maybe you need to stop being so naive," Sam shot back, wondering why he was arguing with a kid. "She might not want to do it, but she's capable of it. She didn't want to kill either, but it still happened. It's what happens when they lose control."

Bobby couldn't help asking even if the question stuck in his throat. "...who did she kill?"

Sam shrugged. "I don't think Jake knows," he said. "Doesn't matter, does it? He's still dead. So think again when you say she wouldn't hurt you."

If Caroline had killed someone, she probably felt awful about it. And it'd probably been someone who had wanted to hurt her or her family. And if it hadn't, then it probably made her less likely ever do that again.

Bobby shrugged, standing his ground even as he wanted to go find Jack. "You're right. It doesn't matter. Cause that's in the past, and I don't blame people for what happened in the past. You're just trying to bully me into not being friends with her cause you hate everyone like her."

"No, kid," Sam assured him and maybe he had softened a little. "I'm trying to make you see that things aren't as simple as you'd like them to be. That urge that made her kill someone? It's there and it won't ever go away and sooner or later, she's going to give into it again. Just be smart enough not to be the around for it."

"You're the one who wants things simple," Bobby argued, a little angry at the softening and feeling like he was being treated like a kid. "Cause if she's evil and wants to kill everyone, you don't have to think twice about killing vampires or being mad at Jake cause he likes her. It's easier for you."

Sam snorted at him. "Whatever, kid. Don't say I didn't warn you."

"I don't want your warning," he decided. "But thanks for-" no, Bobby, you don't thank people for telling you a friend might kill you. He stopped and restarted. "Guess I can see why you don't like the island. Have a good trip home."
