Parents' Weekend Brunch, Sunday Morning to Afternoon, The Park

As was traditional, the start of the end of Parents' Weekend featured plenty of food, benches, chairs, and coffee in the park. After all, the Student Council couldn't let the parents be weirded out one last time without a feast.

The sky was a little overcast, but the temperatures were still above normal, which was a lucky break for the final day of the weekend.

"The Ramon who eats the weird things." Or possibly just the lots of things. She was fuzzy on the exact details of that conversation ~~much like her mun~~.

"Probably better than siblings," she decided. "Popular opinion is friends are less annoying."

"Anyone show up to see you?" Sam asked, letting his lack of correction about Ramon be his answer. "Any Georgia Peaches on the island today?"

Kate exhaled a wry laugh. "You can call him that if you want." It would be funny to see.

"Him?" Sam asked, raising an eyebrow. "Dad? Uncle? Grandfather?"

"Guardian," Kate corrected. "Closest I've got." Families, always always a sore spot for some reason. In her case, because she didn't have one anymore.

"But you wouldn't have wanted to call my dad a Georgia Peach to his face either."

"Guardian," Sam said, nodding. "How's he like the place? Impressed with the massive amounts of free food around? That's what my friends like the best, I think."

Kate's mouth twisted. "I think he's way too busy thinking of reasons I should be elsewhere to concentrate on the food." Greg had a bit of a one-track-mind sometimes. When it came to this particular subject especially.

"Is that why yours have decided to leave you to stare out the table over here?" Brunch called?

"They didn't leave me," Sam said, shaking his head. "They wanted to eat, I'm not that hungry thus they are at the food table and I am here."

Sam shrugged like he'd just solved some big mystery. "I'm sure they'll come back over here soon enough. Why, wanna meet them and gossip with them about me?"

"I don't think I have any gossip about you Seattle," she said with a little smirk. "I might have to start making things up. I don't know if you want that."

"Isn't that typically how gossip works?" Sam asked, raising an eyebrow. "Gossip usually has some truth to it but who wants to spread gossip about boring stuff?"

"I hear some people have the kinds of lives that don't need the embellishments." Kate shrugged mildly. "I could explain about your deep affinity for pet names and that you're a serial dater." Both... based in truth?

"I'm guessing they already know you're considering getting your skateboard grafted to your feet." That seemed like a long-term relationship he had going there.

"...serial dater?" Sam asked, raising an eyebrow. "Where'd you get that truth from?"

"Five dates in one night," Kate reminded him shaking her head. "I think that can come under the title 'serial'."

"Five dates that were three minutes long," he clarified because that made a difference. "Combined, they probably don't even equal an actual date. Better get the facts straight before you start labeling me a serial dater."

"Gossip only has to have the 'some truth' to it according to you." It was his own fault for giving her that particular ruling now, wasn't it?

"Or are you going to take that back now?"

"Nope, but serial dater sounds more like a label than some gossip," Sam replied, shrugging. "I don't like labels that aren't really truthful. Maybe say I went on a serial dating spree instead of calling me a serial dater."

"You're actually coaching me in what lies to tell your friends and how?" Because they had to be the right lies, obviously.

Kate looked amused. Serial dating spree. She could work with that.

"My friends aren't gonna believe you no matter what you say," Sam informed her, shrugging. "They're a little smarter than that. And going from dateless to serial dating is not gonna be believable."

"If they're anything like the one friend of yours I have met, they might just go along with it." They could have the right sense of humor for that. You never knew.

"Brooke?" Sam asked because that's the one friend he remembered being around. "She's a girl. She's gonna want to think I'm dating every girl in existence so I don't get rusty."

"I'm sure she'd be thrilled to hear my gossip then," she joked, leaning her hip against his table.

"But I still don't really see what being a girl has to do with that. Your guy friends wouldn't want to know you're a regular Casanova?"

He wasn't. She knew that. So what?

"I don't think Ramon and Frank really care about that part of my life," Sam told her, shrugging. "They're more concerned with Doritos, skateboarding and not working at Plumpy's. We live an easy life back there in Seattle."

Kate snickered a laugh. "Sounds dreamy." They definitely came from different worlds. "Why leave all that?" The lazy slacker life. He seemed to like it.

"Maybe I wanted a change," Sam said, shrugging a shoulder. "Besides, I'm not leaving it permanently. I'm going back when I'm done here."

"Normal kids take a gap year to slack, you're taking a year at school for a break from slacking." She quirked a little smile. "Just got to be different."
