Parents' Weekend Brunch, Sunday Morning to Afternoon, The Park

As was traditional, the start of the end of Parents' Weekend featured plenty of food, benches, chairs, and coffee in the park. After all, the Student Council couldn't let the parents be weirded out one last time without a feast.

The sky was a little overcast, but the temperatures were still above normal, which was a lucky break for the final day of the weekend.

"Pretty sure half the students are with you on that," Natalie allowed. "The dorms aren't high in nutritional value."

Natalie cooked a little bit sometimes, though.

"Sam looks like he's eating just fine," Frank remarked, pretty damn glad about that. He didn't get the whole vegetarian thing. "Must have found a spot where leafy greens are plentiful."

Ramon laughed and patted Frank's shoulder for that one. "Sam told you he was a leaf eater, right? Never could figure out how he did that while frying up greasy meat."

"Where I'm from, vegans are special," Natalie shared with a shrug, picking up some things to place on her plate. "Vegetarians, too, maybe. So I'm not all that surprised."

"So, you think he's special like that?" Ramon asked curiously. She probably wouldn't answer but he kind of wanted to gauge what she knew about Sam, if she anything.

Frank...was actually kind of curious what she'd say too.

"I think he's special enough for me to want to keep talking to him," Natalie replied, idly, not looking at either of them because the food selection was interesting.

It might not have been the answer they were looking for, but they were getting it. "Don't know about anything else."

Except whatever it was that made him say versions of the cliché 'you don't know what I'm capable of'.

Ramon shared a look with Frank before he looked back at Natalie. It didn't seem like she knew which didn't surprise him. Sam was so scared of being evil.

"Anything else?" Frank asked, deciding to talk since Ramon was thinking. "What else would there be?"

"Is this some kind of an interrogation?" Natalie wondered dryly, glancing over at them. "If it is, I think you should maybe narrow your questions down a little."

"It could be," Frank said, shrugging. Ramon smacked his shoulder with his free hand before eating a few strips of bacon.

"Do we need to interrogate you for some reason?" Ramon countered right back, raising an eyebrow. "You playing at something that Sam doesn't know?"

Natalie gave him one of her mildly unimpressed looks. "Do you actually think I might be doing something like that?" she wondered. "Or are just saying that because I brought up the interrogation thing first?"

"Hey, neither of us know you," Ramon reminded her, glancing at Frank. "As far as we know, you could be some deceptive black widow with a mean streak a mile wide or you could be the nicest girl in the world."

Frank sighed and rubbed his head, having hoped that Ramon's mouth wouldn't get them into too much trouble.

"You don't give much away," Ramon added, shrugging.

"No, I don't," Natalie agreed, oh so evenly. "I like to keep my stuff to myself." And she just so happened to be amazingly good at that, too. "You can always ask Sam. You're probably not going to find out anything from me that he doesn't already know."

Because they were just random people, as far as she was concerned.

"And for the record, most girls fall somewhere between a black widow and the nicest girl in the world, not at the extremes."

"Uh, we're really not bad guys," Frank said, trying to put out the new fire that Ramon had started. "We're just...concerned. It's been a rough few months between Ramon almost dying and Brooke dying and..."

Other things. Frank didn't continue though, slanting a glance over at Ramon.

"Sam likes to keep stuff to himself too," Ramon added, watching her steadily while he ate some of his brunch.

"I know," Natalie said, because she did. "And that's fine. I like that quality in a person."

She liked mystery and staying interested. People who just dumped everything out there were suspicious, anyway.

"And I like Sam," she added with another little shrug. "I'm not intending to try and kill him or anyone else, either."

"Well, that's...good," Frank said, glancing over at Ramon for confirmation. "He's kind of hard to kill anyway."

Yeah, someone had actual knowledge of that. Poor Sam.

"That'd kind of put a damper on the whole liking thing, wouldn't it?" Ramon joked, half smiling. "What are you intending to do with him?"

Hey, a friend was curious!

"Stare at each other in silence until someone's phone goes off or someone falls asleep," Natalie deadpanned, borrowing a little something from him from the day before. "We're very quiet, remember?"

"How romantic," Ramon said sarcastically. "Yeah, that's my idea of a good time right there."

Frank snickered and popped a piece of bread into his mouth while he watched the interplay that was happening right now.

"Sam's my best friend," Ramon said seriously. "I just want to make sure he's okay."

"He's fine," Natalie said. It was sincere, even if that might have been difficult to discern. "I'm not intending to change that." A beat. "And no one said anything about romance."

Unless Sam had.

"Yeah, that was sarcasm." Sam hadn't said anything about any romance, nope. "I didn't really think you two stared dreamily at each other and sighed. Frank's the only person I know does that and that's when he's looking at Brooke's picture."

"Shut up!" Frank exclaimed, frowning.

Natalie suppressed an eyeroll in favour of a quiet sigh. "Anyway," she said, "Sam's okay and will continue to be so, and no one's turning evil or anything. We're taking a class to prevent that."

They were!

"So, I hope you have a safe journey back to Seattle."

"Thanks for the chat," Ramon said, giving her a little salute. "We'll be fine in Seattle and Sam will be fine here."

He'd better be fine here, at least.

"See you around."

Natalie gave them both a gracious little nod. "Yeah, see ya."

And off she went for more quality time with her book and her food.
