Parents' Weekend Brunch, Sunday Morning to Afternoon, The Park

As was traditional, the start of the end of Parents' Weekend featured plenty of food, benches, chairs, and coffee in the park. After all, the Student Council couldn't let the parents be weirded out one last time without a feast.

The sky was a little overcast, but the temperatures were still above normal, which was a lucky break for the final day of the weekend.

"Tyler," he shared, pulling out a chair. "Have a seat. Tell me how you and Caroline hooked up." And let him just picture that for a second.

Fortunately, Miley wasn't familiar with most mature slang, so she didn't take offense. Or note the visual. "I just noticed her shoes at the Welcome Picnic," she laughed. "She dresses really well. We sort of hit it off from there."

"How about you? How'd you guys meet?" Not that Miley questioned Caroline's ability to find cute boys wherever she went.

"You guys do have that in common. But I can't say I remember meeting Caroline. Who really remembers toddler play groups?" he supplied. "Our families move in the same circles back home, plus it's kind of a small town."

Miley nodded. "Virginia, right? I've been to... Raleigh? Is that there?" Hang on. "No, wait, maybe it's Richmond." Yeah, 'geometry' wasn't her strong suit.

"Yeah, we're like, three hours from Richmond." Tyler shrugged, Mystic Falls was a hard place to explain. "But you're from deeper in the south I bet, yeah?"

"Yeah, Crowley Corners," Miley agreed. "It's in Tennessee. Super tiny; you've probably never heard of it." Except that that wasn't why.

Okay, the curiosity was killing her. "So are you, you know, like Caroline?" she asked, miming biting the air.

Tyler laughed at her miming. "Yes and no. I'm surprised she didn't tell you she was having a whole werewolf invasion this weekend. So I'm kind of the other sort of bitey. With claws and moons and other issues."

"Ohhh, like Jake," Miley realized, nodding in recognition. It really was impressive how quickly she'd managed to adjust to all of this. "That's so cool that you guys just, like, get along. From Dusk you'd think you were doomed to never interact, you know?"

Yeah, about that...

"Sort of like Jake," he shrugged, disliking the comparison considering what was going on this weekend. "But yeah, the books got it all wrong. Caroline was the only person around who understood what I was going through and she works harder than anyone to keep herself all controlled and stuff."

Too bad he'd failed to give Sam this speech.

"That's really sweet," Miley said, smiling slightly. "She seems... like the kind of person you'd want to trust. It's really cool that you could count on her."

Just you wait, Miley.

"And until she got here, she was super silent about what I am, but I gathered from the rest of the people here that nothing's much of a secret in this town. Seems like a good kind of place."

Oooh. Yeah.

"I mean, there are some secrets," Miley said, shifting a little. "You know, like the kind of thing that can't get out or else people will totally freak out and never let you have a normal life. You know?" That was... awkward. "But I guess mostly, yeah, people are pretty open."

Yeah, that sounded just like his secret that Caroline was blathering all over everywhere. "It's different. So far, Caroline's the only one I've told about me back home. It's hard to really be normal with my friends knowing I can't actually tell them everything without them freaking out or telling the wrong people."

Miley's jaw dropped, and she stared. "I know just what you mean!" she exclaimed. "I mean, I have this thing. Um, this... secret, I guess you'd say. And I can never tell anyone because if I did, no one would ever like me for me anymore, and everyone would know." She shook her head, then admitted with a grin, "I didn't know it was like that for anyone else."

Tyler laughed. "You're not alone. The problem is, to tell anyone how it feels, you kinda end up telling them the secret, which is how Caroline and I became actual friends." Versus just teens who tolerated one another as eye candy.

"Yeaaah, I don't know if I'm there yet," Miley admitted. "I want to, but when there's so much on the line, you know..."

This was starting to sound like a metaphor for homosexuality. Which it really wasn't. ~~Or was it?~~

"Trust me, I get it," Tyler said, chuckling a bit. It was kind of obvious why he would come all this way for Caroline when you knew she was his only secret keeper.

"So, uh..." Miley peered around. "Where is she, anyway? And Jake, actually? They're usually at parties and stuff."

Ooooh.

"Yeah, there was some massive drama thing going down with Jake's friend," he said, shrugging a bit. "I was kind of surprised to hear about it on the announcements. But Caroline's supposed to meet me here after she finds him. You want me to tell her something for you?"

"Nah, I guess I'll find her," Miley replied, shaking her head. "But thanks." Pause, then a shy "You're really easy to talk to."
