Parents' Weekend Brunch, Sunday Morning to Afternoon, The Park

As was traditional, the start of the end of Parents' Weekend featured plenty of food, benches, chairs, and coffee in the park. After all, the Student Council couldn't let the parents be weirded out one last time without a feast.

The sky was a little overcast, but the temperatures were still above normal, which was a lucky break for the final day of the weekend.

"Lucky," Emily said with a shy grin. "My school only has a couple, I think. Pretty much me and my ex."

Huuuuge blush. Huge.

"We had me and my ex until she ... graduated and turned into my ex."

Blushing riiiiight back.

"But we're still friends."

Emily winced in sympathy. "Yeah, my first girlfriend used to go to my school too," she said quietly. "Then she had to... switch. To a religious camp." She sighed. "It was... complicated."

Even more complicated now that Maya was back, too, but Emily didn't even know how to start on that particular score.

"Long-distance can be really hard. But we're trying to be friends again now, too."

"Is she doing okay?" Tara asked, concern flickering through her eyes. "At the ... camp. I know those can be rough on people."

"Yeah, I think she managed," Emily replied, appreciating Tara's concern. "I got to call her a few times. It was really rough on her at first, though. Especially because my mom was the one to send her there."

And now she felt bad about bothering Tara with her own things, so she tried to segue, "What about -- um, what about your ex? What's she like?"

"Kennedy?" Tara said. "Even if things are ... over with us, she's amazing. She's about the bravest person I've ever known. She went back to New York and she's ... kind of figuring out what's next. She teaches self-defense to kids."

Which left out a huge part of Kennedy's life, but the Potential thing might be weird to explain to a friend of a new girl.

"She sounds pretty amazing," Emily admitted. "Maya's sort of... I mean, she's brave like that. She says things everyone's thinking, and it doesn't bother her if people react badly." As opposed to Paige, Emily's subsequent girlfriend, who'd both said rude things and reacted harshly to naysayers. ~~Plus, Paige didn't look nearly as much like Kendra the Vampire Slayer.~~

"That's exactly the way Kennedy is," Tara confirmed. "But if she likes you, she's just so confident about everything that she makes you feel a little more amazing."

"I know that feeling," Emily said, smiling. "Really. The only problem is that being away from her is sort of like... not having it anymore." She took a sip of her quickly-cooling coffee, then asked hesitantly, "Is it like that for you too?"

"Yeah," Tara acknowledged. "I didn't think about it that way, but -- yeah. Like everything kind of -- stopped being solid."

"Exactly," Emily agreed. "Wow. I am so glad I found someone to talk to about this. Back in Rosewood, everything's, like, repression central."

"We can stay in touch," Tara offered, scrabbling for a piece of paper. "Here -- give me your phone number and we can text and stuff."

"Definitely," Emily said, smiling as she passed her phone to Tara to enter her number. "And give me yours, too. We can have, like, a mini-Pride."

Then, subconsciously reaching up to twirl her hair around her finger, she added, "And if I ever wind up visiting Hanna here again, I'll give you a call."

"I'd ... really like that," Tara said, smiling as she punched in her digits.

She wasn't sure she was up for anything, let alone something long distance, but a cute lesbian to be friends with? She wasn't going to complain.
