Because he wasn't going to explain that this was defending the honor of the guy who he had to shut down yesterday.

Peter, still holding a hand to his face, stared. At least his nose wasn't broken or anything. He wondered if Topher's girls hit harder than that.

And hey, if Tony was willing to fall on his own sword here, Peter had no problem with it. "We were talking, and disagreed about something," he said. "Apparently Tony thought that was a good enough reason to hit me."

"Yes, this does mean detention," Steve told Tony, "but if you think in a million years I was going to buy that excuse you've got another think coming." He didn't find Peter's explanation particularly helpful, either, so, "Now, one of you is going to tell me what this is actually about. Right now."

His stance didn't soften any, but he did ask Peter, "How's your face, son?"

Tony stood firm on his 'disappointing America' stance, looking away from Mr. Rogers and Peter. And possibly hoped that he would bruise spectacularly.

He contemplated telling Steve what was what so he could spin the story accordingly, but figured that would get him even more shit if he did it in front of Tony.

If the kid wasn't giving up the guy who'd hit him in the face now, he probably wasn't going to later. "Yes. As the victim and without retaliation, there's no reason to punish you, so you're free to go." Tony, on the other hand. "Mr. Stark." Yeah, he hadn't called Tony that in a while. "You can tell me now, or you can tell me in the morning." You know, Tony, when you met him for PT. Which you signed on for willingly. You poor bastard.

Oh, Peter would have been happy to give up Tony some time later if he could figure out a way to do it that wouldn't get traced back to him.

As it was, he was planning to grab a portal to see his sister so he could finally get out of this stupid teenage nonsense. "Thank you, sir," he said, and got up and went for the door.
