You know, for someone who had convinced herself that her leaving was a non-issue and completely inconsequential to the world as a whole (this one, anyway; obviously, fighting the Galactic Federation was a pretty big deal to the world being constantly theatened by them), Summer sure had been reluctant to bring it up to most people. Like, yeah, sure, she'd sort of talked to Rey about it last week, and since Beth actually had shown up, that pretty much sealed the deal, and she'd already taken care of a few loose ends like her class and her management duties at T&C, but....she hadn't really mentioned it to a lot of people and found herself weirdly reluctant to do so.

Because it just wasn't how she did things, right? She was her grandfather's granddaughter. It felt much more natural to just up and leave and that was that than anything else.

But tempting as that actually was, it also felt kind of wrong, so she figured she would find some sort of middle ground between actually telling people and just flying off into the great starry beyond in the one way she knew how to channel emotions that she didn't know how to deal with very well: jello shot specials.

Because that was what people were really going to miss, right? The jello....

"Exactly," said Summer, with a nod, "nothing to make a big deal about."

Because it wasn't, and it shouldn't be, and no one should care anyway, and, man, she really should have just left, that's how not of a big deal it was!

"So," she said staunchly, "enough about my stupid space plans. How have you been, Mr. Morningstar?"

"Shockingly well, so far," Lucifer said. With only a hint of emotional instability around the edges! It was a whole new him! "We're leaving for the Bahamas next week. Duke's cast will be coming off and he's been absolutely pathetic about not being able to swim for weeks now."

"I swear," said Summer, shaking her head, "one of these days, you're going to actually not qualify 'well' with a term like 'shockingly.' But a trip to the Bahamas sounds fun! Post a few things on Instagram? Hopefully, I won't be so far out in the space boonies that I can actually keep up on my socials..."

Although not being able to would actually serve very well as a way to convince her to make sure to come back.

Don't tempt Lucifer into staging a worldwide social media blackout just to get you back, miss Smith.

"I'll try," he said. "I bought Duke a marina for his birthday, so we're just going home away from home, so to speak."

But that would be, like, super flattering, and Summer would not at all mind even a tiny little bit....

"Oh, yeah, that's riiight," she grinned a little at that. "I forgot about the whole 'bought-Duke-a-marina' thing. That's even better, because what's the whole point of buying someone a marina if they're not going to get any use out of it?"

It would be like buying someone a bar for her birthday, and then having her mostly narratively forget about it and not really do anything with that fact, or something! Ahem.

"I mean, the marina is there for the long haul, specifically," Lucifer felt the need to explain, "But yes, otherwise. Sun, beaches, he can pretend to be a dolphin for the next while."

Lucifer was totally making fun of Duke. It wasn't like he'd texted the man just last night because he'd spotted a dolphin in the bay and it made him think... oh shut up.

"Careful," Summer warned with a small smile. "Talk like that, you're pretty much dooming him to wind up being a dolphin for the entire trip."

And if that did actually happen?

Well, then, ha ha, Summer was going to be in space in a different dimension, so she could be recused of all blame herself, obviously!

"Please, it'd be regular Earth," Lucifer huffed, though he looked faintly terrified now. "...How was your anniversary, by the way?" Had he asked before?

"It was fine," Summer replied, finding herself being magnanimous by moving along from the Dolphin!Duke discussion, and then the dopey smile that couldn't be avoided but was also maybe tinged with more than a little bit of reluctancy and pre-emptive regret managed to surface. "Amazing, actually, and, no, we didn't get attacked by any aliens that weekend, that was the weekend following it that that happened."

And kickstarted....all of this, really.

"I'm very glad to hear it," Lucifer said, smiling. "I knew you were a bit, well. Anxious at the time."

"You know me better than that, Mr. Morningstar," Summer informed him with a wry look. "By now, you should know that I'm anxious, like, all the time."

It's just she was sometimes better at hiding it than others.

"But, I mean, it was kind of a big deal. I mean, a whole year. With the same person."

And now she was definitely going into space in part because that was a lot.

There were a lot of reasons for going into space, sure. But she would be lying if she said that wasn't one of them.

"It's certainly not a feat I've managed," Lucifer said.

But only because he'd only been with Duke and Octavia for ten months at this point. With any luck, miss Smith would be in space when he had his own, clearly proportional meltdown.
