The Beach, Monday afternoon

After classes were over (or roughly, it wasn't like he kept track like some kind of creeper), he put on his favorite Hawaiian shirt from the Shenanigans--the Hot Dog Bigfoots--and headed down to the beach.

In a little while, there were four fires roaring merrily: three on different grills with a variety of meats, one sequestered just for pork products, and one for vegetarian options. Steve'd even sourced some fresh ahi again and was feeling particularly pleased with himself about that.

The fourth fire was a cute little bonfire with neatly stacked rejected Shenanigan shirts placed a safe distance from it, along with buckets of water and sand for fire safety (and because McGarrett had 100 percent been a Boy Scout).

There were coolers of drinks including one of beer with a sign--"If you are from the HS and take a beer at a cop party, you're dumber than we thought and are v sad for you"--as the only disincentive.

Come on down, Fandom! Say goodbye to the summer. Eat food, drink beer, get rid of polyblend if that's your thing...

"Oh, good!" Raiden said, clearly relieved. "I always worry when I try something new that people aren't gonna like it."

"That's how I look at things," Raiden agreed cheerfully. "You could miss out on a new favorite thing because you're like, 'sounds weird.' You've gotta at least try stuff...which is how I found myself running a restaurant."

"That's how I found myself a doctor of astrophysics," she joked. "And now presently a... semi-god type thing."

"Oh," Raiden said, "I just assumed you were born like that." You know. Like him.

Then the first part caught up and he said, "Shut up, doctor of astrophysics, what? That's incredible!" What was she even doing talking to his dumb ass? Then he looked very confused. "Is Gray taking an astrophysics class?"

Well, that was sweet enough that Jane couldn't help but smile at it. "No, no, no. It's a class on Heroism. Which I'm learning along with my class, really. And, you know, magic hammer that caused the god thing."

Oh, yeah, more waving around of Mjolnir.

Raiden eyed the hammer warily. "The hammer made you into a god," he echoed as he studied it. "So, uh, what's that thing made out of, anyway?"

It wasn't vibranium, after all.

"Celestial steel," he said with a nod. "Sort of. Right? You could hit me with it to be sure. If I don't get back up then it's definitely celestial--actually this is sounding like a worse idea the longer I talk."

Raiden eyed the hammer. Between its size and Jane's biceps, he was pretty sure it could really hurt him. "Yeah, no. That would be bad, actually. Let's just assume it's celestial steel, maybe."

"Oh, no," Raiden said. "I'm a Nephilim."

"What exactly does that mean then?" she had to ask, leaning in like the curious scientist that got her in this mess to begin with.

"Oh, well, uh," Raiden said. He was not used to trying to explain this. "It means that I'm immortal, and I can't be really hurt except by celestial steel," hence his concern about her hammer. "And I have wings--I mean, they're put away right now, but I have them. And it's why with, you know, the curse."

"Back home most people just sort of know this," Raiden said. "Well, most supernatural people, anyway. I'm sorry, I'm not used to explaining it." Plus he thought Gray was keeping it kind of quiet, but it was Raiden's story, too, so... "Uh, my father was one of the first angels to follow Lucifer when he fell. The Supreme Being cursed their first-born sons." You heard it here first, folks. God was a dick who cursed babies. "I'm cursed with Gluttony. That's why I'm always hungry."

Jane frowned at that. "Well, that Supreme Being sounds like a jerk. You were just a baby," she said firmly.

"Oh, I wasn't actually born yet," Raiden said. "When the curse happened. It was just...shitty all around, but...here I am! I mean, it could be worse. I could be Gray." Or Daman. Envy made Daman such a bitch.
