After classes were over (or roughly, it wasn't like he kept track like some kind of creeper), he put on his favorite Hawaiian shirt from the Shenanigans--the Hot Dog Bigfoots--and headed down to the beach.

In a little while, there were four fires roaring merrily: three on different grills with a variety of meats, one sequestered just for pork products, and one for vegetarian options. Steve'd even sourced some fresh ahi again and was feeling particularly pleased with himself about that.

The fourth fire was a cute little bonfire with neatly stacked rejected Shenanigan shirts placed a safe distance from it, along with buckets of water and sand for fire safety (and because McGarrett had 100 percent been a Boy Scout).

There were coolers of drinks including one of beer with a sign--"If you are from the HS and take a beer at a cop party, you're dumber than we thought and are v sad for you"--as the only disincentive.

Come on down, Fandom! Say goodbye to the summer. Eat food, drink beer, get rid of polyblend if that's your thing...

"What the hell," Jaina said. "Sorry. Good for you again. But what the hell."

"Magic hammer," Jane suggested. Like that made it better.

"Apparently," Jaina sighed, as if she could just run on down to the store and pick one up except she was too tired after work.

"Sorry," Jane said, giving her a sympathetic look. "At least it'll keep me from being mistaken for your grandmother? Unless she was this tall. Which would be pretty serendipitous."

"I doubt it, but I've only seen holos." And she and her mom were both shorties. "But people tend to focus more on faces."

"Is it awkward?" Jane had to ask. "There's a guy here who looks just like my ex, but maybe a little younger? And it's less awkward than I thought it'd be."

Maybe because he held zero attraction to her gender as a whole.

"It's good that it's not that bad!" Jaina enthused. "I've been so used to this sort of thing that it's not that bad for me. It might be different for say, Grandfather."

"Oh, no," Jane said immediately. "Should I avoid him? I could avoid him."

TOO LATE, JANE.

Jaina frowned. "Anakin?"

HAD HE NOT TOLD HER?

Nope! That was a nope!

Jane inhaled deeply and just nodded at that. And nodded a little while longer.

And there was a loud sigh from Jaina followed by a facepalm.

"So, this is really awkward," Jane said, still nodding as she thought back on all their interactions.

"I'm sorry," Jaina said with another sigh. "It's complicated, and I know it threw him for a loop."

To say the least.

"It's very complicated," she agreed. "Is there anything I can do to make it... less complicated?"

"I'm not positive," Jaina admitted. "I'm a big fan of getting things into the open, but I also know he's had a really rough time lately."

Partly because his dead wife's face was in town.

It was just her face! It wasn't like she could change it. Well. She kinda could, but then she'd look more like Padme.

"He mentioned that last week," Jane replied with a sigh. "I'm sorry. This must be even more uncomfortable for you."

"...Is it wrong that I'm so used to this it's not that bad?" Jaina asked, making a face. "I'm sorry to put you in this position."

"It's fine, you didn't know," Jane replied. "And I can see how it would be awkward to tell someone off the bat when meeting them."

And she didn't even know the whole batshit story!

"Yeeeees," Jaina said, because she did know the whole batshit story. "Like I said, it's complicated."

"Oh, this is going to make checking in after my class interesting," she had to admit. "At least there will be alcohol."

"Make him buy you your drinks," Jaina stated.

"A very good idea." Weren't you glad that your granddaughter was there to talk to Jane now, Anakin?
