Parents Weekend Brunch - Sunday morning in the park

Harvey didn't have too much trouble arranging the brunch in the park. Between the help of the rest of the StuCo members and oddly enough, Marshall (apparently he had a thing for brunch), Harvey hardly had to do a thing. And isn't that what being president is really about?

There was a harvest theme in the tent, with the tablecloths and napkins all in reds, yellows and oranges. Marshall even hand-made the autumn-themed centerpieces on the tables. There was also, of course, every kind of brunch food imaginable set up at the buffet table. There was probably even foods there that didn't even qualify as brunch. Harvey had a hankering for pizza earlier.

A sign was posted outside the tent:

Welcome Parents, Relatives and Friends!
Enjoy Sunday brunch with us!

"Hi yourself," Nancy said, pushing her plate toward John. "I think he went to find fresh coffee."

"Good, maybe that'll take a while," John sighed, looking at her plate and not feeling very hungry. "I heard you had fun during the exhibition yesterday."

Of course his girlfriend had tattled. "You put on quite the show," Nancy replied with a steady smile.

"Thanks." After listening to radio John knew better than to believe her. "Who knows, it could be a new career path for me."

"What's your new career path, something involving video games or comic books?" Dave interjected, disappointment written all over his 20-something face.

"John was just telling me he's going to be a cheerleader," Nancy replied helpfully.

"Thanks, Nance," John muttered, rolling his eyes and grabbing another piece of bacon. Brunch offered good comfort foods.

Dave's eyes tracked the progress of the bacon from Nancy's plate to John's mouth. "Your cooking teacher told me you were having a problem with food."

Choking on the bacon he was chewing, John rasped, "You talked to my teachers?"

"Was it like parent night back in grade school?" Nancy asked. "Lots of complaints about handwriting and playing well with others?"

"Something like that," Dave acknowledged, still looking disappointed.

"Great. I hope you didn't get me in any extra trouble," John muttered, dragging the plate closer to pick at a convenient muffin.

"I doubt you need my help," Dave commented. "You should probably watch the carbs."

John dropped the muffin and mentally counted to ten.

"Wanna tell me why you guys came? I didn't expect you to like any of the choice I've made, Dave, but have you really turned into Dad on me?" He should've counted higher.

"He's worried about you," Dave didn't answer. "With good reason, as far as I can see."

"We keep having the same conversation on repeat," John complained, watching as Nancy suddenly found her cold coffee very interesting.

"We wouldn't have to if you would do the right thing." It's possible Dave was missing the point.

"Okay Dave, you win," John said. "I'll fill out your applications and send them all in this week. Better?"

Re: Tables

[identity profile] dave-not-doug.livejournal.com 2008-10-26 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Dave knew he was being appeased. "Only if you take them seriously and consider going if you get in."

Re: Tables

[identity profile] missed-the-gate.livejournal.com 2008-10-26 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
"Right," John still wouldn't. "Anything else I can do?" Maybe extricate the stick from Dave's ass.

Well, he was already asking for the moon, couldn't hurt to add more. "Keep in touch with people who care about you." Dave threw a significant glance in Nancy's direction.

Nancy smiled, appreciating the assist. "And don't forget the holidays."

"Great. Of course. I'll write more and try to come home for a holiday." John was already making up really good, fake holiday plans as an excuse to get out of that one.
