Parents Weekend Brunch - Sunday morning in the park

Harvey didn't have too much trouble arranging the brunch in the park. Between the help of the rest of the StuCo members and oddly enough, Marshall (apparently he had a thing for brunch), Harvey hardly had to do a thing. And isn't that what being president is really about?

There was a harvest theme in the tent, with the tablecloths and napkins all in reds, yellows and oranges. Marshall even hand-made the autumn-themed centerpieces on the tables. There was also, of course, every kind of brunch food imaginable set up at the buffet table. There was probably even foods there that didn't even qualify as brunch. Harvey had a hankering for pizza earlier.

A sign was posted outside the tent:

"Name's Cid," he said, taking it and shaking vigorously. "Wasn't invited, so I decided to crash in. See what trouble my girl's been getting into."

"Which, I haven't," Rikku said innocently. Or tried to, anyway. "Pops, Romeo, Romeo, Pops. Ooooh, is your dad here, too?"

Romeo didn't chortle at the mention of no trouble, but it was a near thing. "My father? No. Benvolio's about somewhere, or should be. He was coming from the hotel."

He turned to the man. "Do you like the school thus far?"

"Your cousin, Benvolio?" Rikku bounced on her toes. "That's awesome! Wait, is he the one that got married?"

Cid nodded. "Ain't half bad. Met some of her teachers. One of 'em's teaching her to blow things up, and the other beats up guys that try to hit on her. My kinda school."

"Last spring," Romeo said. "You've a good memory, Rikku. If you see a redhead of my age in a loud shirt, it's probably Ben."

He bit his lip. "Professor Deadpool, and ... who is the other one?"

"I'm always a fan of loud shirts," Rikku said. And really, Romeo could probably tell her lack of fashion sense was genetic, at this point. "And Tyler, he teaches chemistry now. I got to blow up a gummi bear for my midterm."

"Waste of good candy," Cid said.

"Blowing things up is never a waste," she announced.

"How do you even get a candy to explode?" Romeo wondered. He didn't know Tyler; he'd gotten an impression from radio that he had a beard and a complicated love life, and was willing to leave things at that.

"You mix it up with potassium chlorate," Rikku said excitedly. "It's an oxidizing reaction. All the molecules start gobbling each other up and swapping around. It's awesome."

"M'girl can blow anything up," Cid said proudly. "Tin cans, a handful of jelly beans, and she'll take a wall out."

He was her father: he was allowed to exaggerate.

Romeo was visibly impressed by the scientific explanation. "I'm sure she can," he told Cid. "It's a useful skill to have, and she's a good friend in other ways as well."

"Yeah, she's a good kid," he rumbled. "Most of the time."

"Romeo helps when we go save the world," she bounced. "We fought a dragon-thing and took out a crazy mind-controlled witch-lady. We rock."

Romeo was confused. Reno was apparently a secret, but killing dragons and witches, that was fine? He'd need to ask Rikku about that.

Later.

"I did my best," he said modestly, trying to keep himself from looking puzzled. "I'm in no rush to go up against a dragon again, I'll say that much."

"Like that worm-thing?" Cid asked. "The one from Bevelle that attacked the airship?"

Rikku had to consider it. "Different. That one kept zipping away, and it was kinda longer and skinnier. This one blew things up more." She would have mentioned Bahamut, except she didn't know if her Pops had ever seen Yuna summon.

Cid shuddered. "Least they're dead now."

"I think that's the best fate for them," Romeo said with a shudder. "You'll have to forgive me, there aren't such things in my world. Did, ah, Brother come?"

"Gotta be a nicer place," Cid grumbled.

Rikku jumped in before Cid could add a few choice words about Yevonites. "No, he didn't. He's probably back watching the airship."

"Buddy is watching the airship," Cid said. "'Cause your brother's an idiot."

"What happened?" Romeo asked, curious.

"Dropped on his head when he was a baby," Cid said. "That's my guess."

Rikku was giving her father the stinkeye. "They probably argued about something stupid, like always."

"He tried to fix the engine," Cid said ominously. "Told him not to, and he did it anyway."

Rikku facepalmed. "Did you crash?"

Brother ... was not someone you'd want fixing the engine, no.

Romeo waited for the answer, curious (and very glad he didn't live on an airship).

"We're fine," he said, waving it off. "But your brother ain't allowed to touch anything 'till I get back, or I'm gonna drag him up on the roof and push him off."

Rikku's family: highly dysfunctional.

Romeo blinked a little at the threat. "I should hope nothing like that would happen," he said, almost blandly. "And I'm glad all ended well. Have you enjoyed your time here, Cid?"

"I have," Cid said cheerfully. "Good town. Lots of interesting people."

"Also, he's been bugging the crap out of me," Rikku volunteered.

"Meetin' all her friends," Cid smiled. Brightly. "She don't tell me much, when she writes home."

Amazing, wasn't it?
