The Park, Sunday Afternoon, The Grand Tea

Mina Harker wasn't particularly fond of children. However, given the alternatives, it seemed a great idea to put them through a bit of culture. Her equal partner in all of this was, of course, the most proper lady she knew of in town: Miss Elizabeth Bennet.

Together, they organized the tables (with extra tiny chairs not just for the children, but if any of the young ones had brought along Mr. Bear to enjoy the event), the tea (of all sorts), and the assorted other bits (scones, crumpets, jam, little cucumber sandwiches and the like).

They also had some rather cheap (they were messy child types, so it made sense not to make them too extravagant) gloves for the little girls, so that they could enjoy the tea properly.

If anyone acted up too much, well, there was Mina Harker on the premises.

"Do you believe then that boys require more discipline or less?" Leto asked.

"It is not a matter of what they require," Mina said. "But to what they react to."

"Or maybe what method is used." He smiled at Mina. "But I appreciate the attempt, even if I find the girls quite as noisy as the boys."

"You seem rather more behaved than all combined," Mina admitted. "What is your name?"

"I am Leto Atreides II," he informed her, although the name didn't seem to mean as much as usual to people here, oddly enough. "And while I have the body of a child, I am older than them in many ways." He smiled.

"I see," Mina said. "Your mind excels beyond your age?"

"I am Pre-Born," he clarified. "My sister and I awakened to consciousness in our mother's womb, and we possess the memories of all our ancestors."

"Now that is a neat trick," Mina said. "I suppose all of this becomes rather juvenile."

"Hardly a trick," Leto said drily. "But yes, your observation is correct."

"Hardly? I beg you to find another on this island with similar traits," Mina said.

He looked at her. "My sister."

"And how old is your sister?" Mina inquired.

"She is my twin sister, but here she is an adult," he informed the lady.

"Intriguing," Mina said. "I shall have to inquire with her."

"And what about what makes you different from all others on this island?" Leto asked, because everyone had something like that, or rather, everyone thought they had. It rarely was as unique as they expected.

"I would hardly say I'm unique," Mina said, even though she rather hoped her particular affliction was. "It would be rather egotistical to think so."

"Everyone has something that makes then unique and at the same time, the same thing might make them more human than anything else," Leto replied. "Like being Pre-Born."

"Though some things make us less so," Mina remarked, grimly.

"Have you studied them carefully enough?" Leto asked.

"Very closely," Mina said.

Smiling a little, Leto said: "I will have to take your word for that, as I don't know what it is."

"I doubt the person involved would think it polite tea conversation for me to share," Mina said.

"Is that important to you?" Leto sounded almost cheerful.

"Without propriety, we are doomed to being mere animals," Mina said.

"Behaving according to the cultural norms doesn't differentiate between human and animal. Using our will to follow or transcend does."

Leto was quite pleased to have found someone how did not back away from a discussion with him.
