The beach, after sunset Saturday

It was Chuck Bass's birthday and by god Blair was going to throw him a party.

By the time sunset arrived a section of the beach had been turned into a party zone. Green silk curtains had been hung up to help define the party space (and provide some privacy for anyone who wanted it). There were tables of food and drink ~~entirely moddable~~ which included Chuck's favorites ~~and product-placed Vitamin Water~~ as well as the birthday cake.

Music was playing, fires were lit to help keep things warm - all in all not a bad little birthday party on the beach.

All that remained was the party goers and the birthday boy.

"Karla, hi," he said with a smile. "It's been good so far. How are you? I see you survived your first week."

She gave him a wry grin. "I was doing well up until this morning. I didn't think I was going to survive the headache I woke up with. But I enjoy all my classes so far, and many of the people I have met are very nice. I just wished your good friend Chuck a happy natal day."

Oh, to have been a fly on the wall if she'd really told Chuck she thought he and Sam were good friends. "Were you not feeling well? With your headache, I mean."

She blushed. A lot. And mumbled something about Leda, Faery water, and hazy memories. At least Sam hadn't seen her carousing last night with Emma, asking people if they knew naughty songs. "But I feel much better now," she assured him. And tonight, Karla was sticking to water. Regular water.

"Awww, you had your first Fandom hangover?" Sam asked, unable to keep from snickering. "I'm glad you feel better. My brother likes to tease me when I don't feel well like that, and make me think of disgusting food combinations."

"Your sympathy warms my heart," she muttered wryly. "But, don't worry. It won't happen again. Now I know better than to drink anything Leda gives me. And I'll be fine with the rest."

"You have a brother? Do you mean another Fandom sibling, or an actual brother?"

"Yes, my actual brother, Dean," Sam said. "As the older brother, it's his job to tease me when I get myself into trouble."

"Truly?" Karla smiled. "I've never had a sibling. Among the short-lived races, multiple children are rare. But I certainly got plenty of teasing from my cousin."

"I think a lot of families here have at least two kids," Sam said. "It's me and Dean and my baby sister. She's too young for us to tease, but her time will come."

"Is Dean also at Fandom?" The idea of families with so many children was odd. Witches were many things and could do many things, but fertile they were not.

"Yeah, he just graduated, so he's going to be here for the rest of the summer before he had to head out." Sam couldn't hide the twinge of sadness that came with that thought.

Karla noticed the sadness and awkwardly patted Sam's shoulder in sympathy. She wasn't good with demonstrations of sympathy even when she knew the other person quite well. "He is leaving Fandom? Where will he go? Is he taking the citizenship test?"

The SATs hadn't been explained very well.

"He's going to meet up with a friend of his, and they're going to work together," Sam said, trying to figure out how to explain hunting. "He's not going to be taking any more tests. If he has his way, he'll never deal with school again."

"Why doesn't he like school?" Karla found the concept unfathomable.

"He's more interested in hands-on learning and common sense than repeating facts from a book," Sam said. "That's probably the biggest difference between us."

"Does Fandom not involve hands-on learning?" Karla asked, worried. "When I was with the Hourglass, no amount of reading books could make up for the hours spent actually learning to brew potions and spin tangled webs."

"Oh yeah, there's plenty of hands-on learning here," Sam said. "Getting to brew potions sounds like fun. And hard work, but fun work."

"Oh definitely," Karla agreed. "Especially since healing brews and poisons are often very close to one another, varying only in degree. Everything must be very precise." She laughed. "And sometimes, there are explosions. Once or twice, they are even the focus of the lesson!"

"What classes do you like best, Sam?"

"Um. Probably the geekiest classes," Sam admitted. "I like classes with a lot of reading and writing and having to think and remember facts and figures and important details. I do well in those classes, so I feel better in them, and that makes me like them more, I think."

"Then I think I am more like your brother. I enjoy reading, but otherwise, I hate sitting still and memorizing stuff. Why memorize something if it's already written down? You can just check the book it's in! It makes sense if you memorize something because you do it so often, but memorization for the sake of memorization seems silly to me."

She paused. "Theatricals are different, of course. Then memorizing things is okay."

"Are you into theatre? There's a guy who runs the theatre in town, and he does different plays all the time. You should check that out," Sam said. "And there's nothing wrong with not liking to sit still. It means you can't possibly be boring."

"I've already auditioned," Karla confirmed, "And borrowed the book from the library to read." She wrinkled her nose. "Lord Shakespeare's writing is quite good, but his ideas of witches are stupid. Why would we need a sailor's thumb? That's just gross. I believe I shall write him a letter when I am done with the play to explain to him what witches are like."

And it would even be a polite letter. For her, anyway. About as polite as the one she wrote to the High Lord, though she'd probably leave out 'blood-sucking corpse.'

Sam thought about telling her Shakespeare was long gone, but he figured letting her get her thoughts out in a letter couldn't hurt anything.

"There are a lot of ideas about witches out there," he said, trying to approach the subject carefully. "Where I come from, a lot of witches aren't very nice."

Karla just gave him a Look. "Sam, where I come from, a lot of witches aren't very nice. Hellfires, I'm not very nice most times. But there's a difference between being nice and drowning sailors because their wives won't share chestnuts with you! And why are they even bothering to set Macgruff up as King? He's male! It makes no sense! Surely there is one Queen in the entire Territory."

There were just some things that Karla would never understand. The patriarchy was one.

"There are queens. They're just...married to the kings," Sam said lamely.
