Parents' Weekend Brunch, Sunday Morning to Afternoon, The Park

As was traditional, the start of the end of Parents' Weekend featured plenty of food, benches, chairs, and coffee in the park. After all, the Student Council couldn't let the parents be weirded out one last time without a feast.

The sky was a little overcast, but the temperatures were still above normal, which was a lucky break for the final day of the weekend.

Bobby hadn't managed to find either Jack or his mom yet so he wandered through the tables looking for someone to talk to. Because he was pretty sure it wasn't cool to just stand there by yourself at a social gathering-thing.

Looking over his shoulder, he bumped into the side of Tyler's table then realised it was a guy he totally didn't know who was eating way more than anyone ever. Which usually meant someone he didn't want to piss off. "Oh! I'm sorry! I wasn't looking where I was going! Hi! Are you a visitor this weekend?"

A year ago, he would've been used to normal high schools still and realised this wasn't the time to strike up a conversation.

Tyler eyed the kid, wondering who had kid siblings who wandered around interrupting people while they were eating. "Yeah. Does your mom know you're talking to strangers?"

"Well, she's not psychic or anything so I don't think she knows right this second," Bobby replied as he (surprise!) took the comment literally. "I'm Bobby McCallister. Who are you visiting?"

"Riiight." Tyler glanced around, wishing he wasn't alone for this. "Caroline Forbes, you seen her around? She was supposed to meet me down here."

"I know Caroline! She lives down the hall from me," he said happily, and now he was eyeing Tyler to see if he looked like a vampire too. Not that Caroline did, but. "I haven't seen her today at all though. Maybe she's doing something for the Student Council?"

"Nah, she's chasing after her boy toy," Tyler shared. "So, you're that Bobby?" This could not be the Bobby mentioned during Caroline's drunken ranting the night before. No way anyone was jealous of this prepubescent and his uh, urges. "You hang out with Caroline?"

"Did something happen to Jake?" Bobby asked, concerned even if he was unable not to snicker at the description. If Jake was her boy toy, did that make Caroline a chew toy and...ew, bad thought. "I don't know if I'm that Bobby, but Caroline's my friend! We have classes together and hang out and stuff. She's really cool. But you already know that probably."

No, seriously, Tyler didn't understand how Caroline would hang out with this doofus.

"Honestly, I don't even know. His boss was here and bitched him out for dating her and chances are it'll end with Caroline crying over another breakup, so be aware she's probably a walking time bomb of tears," Tyler informed him, not too concerned about keeping Jake and Caroline's issues a secret. "And yeah, she is cool. Though I'm realizing she's different than before." Maybe nicer, more compassionate than he'd thought possible.

He got less nerdy when you got to know him? ...okay, maybe not.

"Oh." He frowned, obviously totally worried about Caroline now. "That sucks. I don't think Jake would her hurt. Or I hope that doesn't happen, but I'll try to make sure she's okay. We've got class together tomorrow." And if it was needed, he could check on her after Mom left, and Bobby really hoped she didn't end up hurt. "Different how?"

"Just...nicer? Less obsessed with her girl crap than actually caring about all the people she hangs around," he answered, figuring he could say that since Bobby was one of them. "It's good. Even if the drama's still running thick."

"I'm sorry you had to deal with drama and stuff when you came to visit," Bobby said. Bobby was not very used to saying the word drama when not talking about theatre and it showed. "But I bet she's really glad you're here! And she cares a lot. She was my brother's school assigned little sibling when she got here. She signed me up for this dates thing which was weird but kind of cool!"

Tyler laughed. "Caroline's setting you up on dates? That can't be a good sign." Sounded like her way of giving Bobby someone else to be into. "Let me guess, another tall, chatty, blonde?"

He considered that and shrugged. "It's okay. I'm kind of bad at talking to girls. Only one of them was blonde and tall. But she - wasn't so nice."

"I'm surprised Caroline didn't force you into some made up course on how to deal with girls on a date beforehand," Tyler teased. "But then, my advice would be to go for the not so nice girls. They're usually a lot of fun."

"...please don't suggest that to her," Bobby said, looking worried. If he started to worry about talking to someone then it was going to be the worst thing ever. "I don't think she'd agree. And I don't ever meet any others."

Mostly because the vast majority of girls instantly treated him like a little brother.

"Well....I guess it'd be good to have someone on the island who I can consider trusting to check up on her," Tyler said thoughtfully. "You guys have class this week?"

"This is a weird school," Bobby said, making a face. "Caroline's the only girl, and it's me and Jack and Jake and some other guy."

"Oh damn, no wonder Forbes likes it here. I don't guess there's a lot of classes that go the other way, huh? I'm kind of intrigued by the idea of a school for freaks." It might make his life easier.

Bobby gave him an odd look because, please, Tyler would want to go to a school for freaks about as much as Jack did.

"There's a lot of classes with mostly girls too," he said with a little grin. "All of the girls are really pretty too. Not that Caroline likes that part so much. It's a good school."
