The Beach, Friday Evening

The weather was still a little cloudy in the evening, but it was warm enough that hopefully people would still feel like partying. There was certainly enough food for a party, along with cool drinks and equipment for beach games like beach volleyball. Or beach dodgeball. Or beach something-else-with-balls because the residents and alumni of Fandom tended to be a creative ~~and violent~~ lot.

As the sun went down, the tiki torches came out, so there was no rush to head back indoors. It was time for an evening of fun!

"Still calling me that?" he asked, glancing up at her. "Old habits die hard, I guess."

Natalie shrugged one shoulder, and tempered her smile so that it was pretty much all gone. "It's more of a comeback." There'd been a while when she hadn't dared to use it at all. "Hi, anyway."

"Hi," he said, giving her a little wave. "How's it going?"

"Okay. Taking a break from my busy schedule of work and university." Didn't that sound just like her? "How are you?"

"Just getting away for a bit," he told her, shrugging. "Been a busy spring so far. Lots of things to do though none of them academic. I'm not sad about that."

School was never really his thing.

"No, I wouldn't imagine you would be." He'd taught at Fandom once, that seemed like enough academia for him. "Council?"

"For the most part." He shrugged. "Lots of people arriving that need to be settled. Nothing bad. Just a lot and not everyone likes lending a helping hand."

"Well, at least they have you." And she very sincerely believed that was a lucky thing for anyone he chose to help. He was a good guy. "Just don't overwork yourself."

Like some people.

"I do what I have to do," he said, shrugging. "Overworking myself tends to come with a side of mud or a nap in a chair."

Both things he'd experienced lately. He smiled a bit.

"But, I'll keep that in mind. Same to you."

Natalie smiled back. It was faint, but then it usually was. "Thank you. Try to nap in beds every once in a while."

"It's a nice chair!" It was in his music room, of course it was nice. "But I'll take that into consideration."

Natalie snorted. "I'm sure it's nice, but you still need better support. So good."

"I'll be fine in my chair but I'll be sure to get to a bed every once in awhile," Sam told her. "On my honor."

This time, she actually smiled at him. Not just by her own special Natalie standards, but by other people's, too.

"Good," she said. "And I hope you have a nice evening. Sam."

She wanted to go for a hug or something. She didn't.

Maybe they could work up to hugs. Or something.

"You too," he said, nodding. "Take care. Don't work too hard."

Or save them for special occasions. Like life-threatening situations. Or something.

She nodded at him before going on her way again.
