The Beach, Friday Evening

The weather was still a little cloudy in the evening, but it was warm enough that hopefully people would still feel like partying. There was certainly enough food for a party, along with cool drinks and equipment for beach games like beach volleyball. Or beach dodgeball. Or beach something-else-with-balls because the residents and alumni of Fandom tended to be a creative ~~and violent~~ lot.

As the sun went down, the tiki torches came out, so there was no rush to head back indoors. It was time for an evening of fun!

"Close to it," Didi said, taking Kathy's hand for a brief but warm shake. "I didn't quite graduate, but I went to school here for a while. Nice to meet you."

"That seems to be a familiar refrain," Kathy said, brushing her hair out of her face. "It seems like people just can't stay away. Several of my teachers were students here once upon a time. Probably because this is the only place where everyone will believe your stories of what your high school was like."

"So you don't think people at home are going to believe you about this place?" Didi asked. "You should try. Might surprise you."

"I'm almost not sure what's worse," Kathy admitted. "Not being able to talk to anybody, or my parents finding out what happens here and believing it."

Actually, no, she knew what was worse. Her dad would have her back in LA so fast she'd have windburn.

"My world's actually pretty normal. I mean, okay, we have superheros, but talking ponies and gender swaps are not something most people are prepared for."

"Oh, we have superheroes too," Didi told her. "And, y'know, time travel and aliens and ... all sorts of things. But the pink pony may be one of a kind."

"No time travel, no aliens, no magic..." She was wrong about at least one of those things. "Though I guess I probably shouldn't rule anything out until we figure out where the superpowers are coming from. Who knows? Maybe it is aliens."

She shrugged, then glanced around to see if she could spot the familiar pink flank. "But yeah. Definitely nothing like Pinkie."

"Aliens is a pretty common source," Didi said. "Also, scientific accidents. And weird genes. And a strong will plus crazy amounts of training."

"I'm waiting to hear back about my genes," Kathy admitted. "Mostly I was saying I'm just some kind of mutant, but having people here who are actual mutants with, like, a specific meaning and cultural identity makes me less inclined to use that till I know for sure."

Kathy paused, a little taken aback at how easily she'd said all that. Usually, she would have been a little more reticent about such things, considering she and Didi had just met.

"You should call yourself what you want to call yourself," Didi told her, seeming nonplussed by the confession. She wasn't aware that mutant culture was a thing, but who was she to argue about the concept? "But what's going on with your genes? Well, possibly. Since you're waiting to hear back and everythng."

"Oh, I, uhh...I'm one of those people. With the powers. That just kinda happened."

And so pulled on a costume to fight crime because what else would you do if you suddenly developed powers?

"I mean, nothing like, supercool like Uberman or whatever--" that was the Mighty Dragon "--but still enough to want to know where it came from. Should I be watching my sister for signs she's gonna develop powers, too? That kind of thing."

Hey, putting on a costume to fight crime totally made sense to Didi. What else would you do?

"That makes sense," she agreed. "Big sister, right? You always end up worrying about the little ones. Even when they aren't really that little."

"She's thirteen," Kathy said with a fond smile. "And more than willing to tell me how grown up she is and that I don't have to worry. But, yeah, exactly. She's always gonna be my baby sister, no matter how old she gets."

"I promise that won't change," Didi said, amusement in her dark eyes. Delirium was older than humanity itself, and she'd never stop being the baby sister. "I'm the second of seven. I've never topped worrying, even when we don't see each other for a while."

"She says I nag her about her homework worse than our mom does and I'm on the other side of the country," Kathy agreed. Her smile turned a bit wistful; she missed Sarah, missed her more than pretty much anything else in Los Angeles. "She just tells me I need a boyfriend to occupy my time. Because little siblings repay our concern by being brats."
